@@ritakirkman oh! So you are using acrylic paint then fine pumice gel on top for the tooth?
@ritakirkman3 ай бұрын
@@autumnrain1892 that's one way it can be done... I actually use the Golden Fluid Acrylic (Azo Gold) mixed INTO the Golden Fine Pumice Gel, at about a 1/4 or 1/5 color/gel ratio, this mix will get slightly darker on each application since it's a transparent mixture. Then the darker color is the Art Spectrum Multimedia Primer in terra cotta. Both of these then have the pumice in them already, so no need to overlay the clear pumice gel. But the clear pumice gel could certainly be applied over any acrylic painting, or watercolor, or anything except oil probably, to add grit for the pastel! Very versatile!

I like it too, but its sooo expensive and even worse when you have to have large sheets shipped😢 Have you found any similar rigid alternatives that are more cost effective?
@ritakirkman5 ай бұрын
@@calebplumleeoutdoors yeah it is expensive compared to say, foam board, or regular sorts of MDF. Unfortunately, I've not found anything I like as well as the original Gatorfoam board. Fiberboard (MDF) is too heavy, as are wood panels and gessoboard (though I really love Ampersand gessobord, I'm just spoiled on the lightweight Gatorfoam!) And foam board cannot be primed without warping. You might try to find a plastics distributor in your area. I get my Gatorfoam from Laird Plastics in San Antonio where I'm close enough to pick it up. They cut it in half for me. Laird Plastics is a national company so look for one near you maybe, or other similar companies. Maybe you'll get lucky. Otherwise Dick Blick and Dakota Pastels, and Uline carries it, though I've never had to buy from them or anywhere to have it shipped, I've always gotten it locally. Idea: maybe try sign companies, they sometimes use it, and maybe could sell you some, though idk what their markup would be. Good luck!

@ritakirkman6 ай бұрын
@@sujanithtottempudi2991 i believe if you're concerned it's best to be checked by your Dr regularly. I think different people are more sensitive to lung issues. I've been using pastel since I was 11, but I'm not in the habit of worrying about how I'm gonna die lol. We all gotta go sometime, somehow, and so far I still love pastel and I'm still breathing fine. That said, I do use a hepa air filter in my studio, and I try not to blow on my paintings. I know some other artists who use the Artists Air Air purifier www.artistsair.com/, which is on my wish list. I also use nitrile gloves which have been helping to keep my hands clean and soft 😎

What if you need to remove the glass from the pastel some years down the road (like if the glass breaks?), will it damage the painting?
@ritakirkman7 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, in all the occasions I've had to remove glass from a painting framed in this manner, I've not had any issues with noticeable damage to the painting. A couple of times I had paintings fall on their face on a hard surface, and both times there was some "fuzzing" or "fogging" of the pastel under the glass (when it's framed right up on the glass with no spacers) but the bulk of that squeezed pastel was on the glass when removed, and there was no noticeable change to one painting and very little that needed to be done to the other painting. (Lesson to self: don't allow framed paintings to fall off a counter on to a tile floor, lol) A student of mine suggested using a burnishing roller to push the pastel more firmly into the surface before framing (covered with glassine) but I haven't tried it I'm too lazy, lol, and I don't want to take the chance it might change the painting in any way. When I've unframed older pastel paintings just to reuse the frame, etc, there's only been a faint ghosting of pastel on the glass, which doesn't change the painting at all. There are many ways and methods of "fixing" pastel, framing with or without spacers, or with mats, as many application styles (light tough vs heavy handed etc) as there are pastelists. I always suggest experimentation to find your own best methods for your own work. How I do this is just one way that has worked for me well enough to my satisfaction. Happy Painting!
@ritakirkman7 ай бұрын
PS: I've also had to remove broken glass a few times, and in the same way, I've found very little damage to the painting. Most times, the glass was broken from a stress point at the edge of the frame, and where it cracks out from there, it doesn't put pressure damage on the painting, so it's just a matter of removing the pieces carefully. All broken glass situations might be different, but I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at the minimal painting damage. The exception might be a hard puncture/break somewhere in the face of the painting (which has not happened to me) but that's a chance you also take with any kind of artwork, framed or not.

Hi Rita, I love your work. I too like the idea of using gatorboard...but how would you use a mat with it for framing or is gatorboard used if you want to drop it in a frame without a mat. Thank you!
@ritakirkman9 ай бұрын
Thank you Marie! The short answer is yes 😎. I frame most of my paintings without mats, which is super easy with Gatorboard. If I plan to mat a painting, I will cut the board to the size of the frame and paint the painting inside a measured "border" area that the mat will cover. If I want to mat one that's already painted to the edges, it's a matter of mounting it on a backing and filling the extra area with additional foam board to bring the mat up to level. Also, I always use a foam board or mat board under the mat as a spacer to hold the mat above the painting slightly, so that pastel dust will fall behind it and not on it (The main reason I don't use mats 😆)
