Came here from Reddit. Don’t gamers in general want a good story and gameplay over a character to goon to? Or is gooning all that matters to modern gamers? I’m an old gamer so maybe I’m just not part of the crowd anymore but what are we saying when the message has been story and gameplay over graphics for years and now we’re posting about who’s the hotter character that we want? What if the naughty dog character turns out to be a total badass? Wouldn’t that be preferable to a half naked sex appeal centered character?

imo (please don't fight with me over this), what I want is an interesting concept for a character. Idgaf if a female character is masculine or ugly, nor do I care if a male character is feminine or ugly, just give me a character that has a cool story and personality. I find myself unable to connect with oversexualized characters and like them, why? Because they rarely have any personality. It's always the same copy-paste "sultry" traits that make their sole purpose fan-service Sure, you can make a character attractive, whether male or female, but for the love of god, just don't objectify them to the point where the ONLY thing that comes to mind when you think of them is "HOT!!!!"

Everyone deserves representation in video games. Since I was a little girl, I felt weird and uncomfortable playing games with oversexualised female characters. I was so happy to see women whose only qualities weren't titties and ass, who wore proper clothing and looked like real women. Why do male characters get to be scruffy and "unattractive" and female characters don't? This is an incredibly objectifying point of view, and you cleary cherry picked these opinions. Female gamers want both of these options.

As a female gamer, I enjoy the eye candy of both men and women characters.

I think it's oversimplification of it. Games can come in many different forms and atitudes. intergalatic *seemed* (and this is very vague so far) to be pretty heavy story, the facial animations really stood out in how realistic they were, in that setting i can understand why you would go for more realistic, toned down woman that looks just "okay" Just because women want attractive characters in one setting, it doesn't mean that the look in the trailer can't fit the vibes in a different game. I don't want every character in every context to look like mercy like you are suggesting lol

Both characters are equally bad, they are both sides of the same coin, one is for the "modern audience" and the other for horny idiots. I want to play compelling characters and epic adventures like what we got before, free of political crap and "messages".

If youre a really big defender of the books even all the games are fanfic, since the author just sold the license and never seemed to work with the team. He didnt believe in the success of the games and concentrated on his writing, which I can respect - somebody that writes Ice and Fire wont ever finish those cuz of the side stuff hes doing. ;D

Female Gamer here and I cant for the life of me understand why Devs think I would enjoy looking at characters that are aesthetically unpleasing and repugnant! I'm a woman I like looking at pretty things, things that are beautiful. AlsonI hate the narrative that to be considered strong, women basically must become and look like men. Let us be strong and beautiful and feminine. It's those kinds of characters I can relate to and look up to.

I am a cis girl, and I care a lot about aesthetics, like heavily. I wanna see attractive people in games, especially women, it's aspiring to me. If there is a mod for the game, just for making face and body prettier, I'm downloading it. This loud minority act like attractive people don't exist at all. Even in real life you need to try hard to find a truly ugly person. Realism in games is ok for me, only when studios don't purposefully uglify characters for the sake of some political bs. I hope this trend will soon die down, and we will see a lot of pretty characters from western AAA projects again. Fun fact: Stellar Blade's lead character's body based on a real woman body (Shin Jae-eun).

I think it's not as black and white as everyone wants an attractive girl or a dude. Personally I don't mind a goofy character, an unattractive character, a weird ass robot, a badass robot, a plant, a cat, a dog or whatever. It's about what fits the theme of the game. For Gears of War, for Space Marine 2, for Stellar blade, a conventionally attractive, or beefy muscular character is what fits the theme. For "Stray" a cat fits the theme. etc~ its all about the context of the game.

We just want good games, we don't care how attractive the character is..

I am a gamer that just so happens to be a girl. Now, I am not going to speak on behalf of all women because I personally always pick male options, especially in online games. I do not prefer looking at "attractive" females because I do not find females to be attractive. This also means I do not care for the other way around. I believe the general women consensus is that both are acceptable, but women are most likely to pick the option they WANT to see THEMSELVES as. -Which just so happens to be busty hot girl characters. In my case, I wish I could be a buff man; a fantasy I can only live through gaming, which is why I am a gamer.

This is Horizon: Zero Dawn all over again. People complained about Aloy being so "masculine looking and ugly". But now its a very loved game and main character amongst gamers. Yeck there were complaints that they made her look more girly in the second game because it felt kinda forced. I feel like this game coming out will be the same. People complain how much this woman looks, then a little down the road when people actually play the game, it'll become loved amongst players. If you want my opinion as a woman, I like playing any character who looks like anyone as long as the personality, gameplay and story are great.

I like realistic depictions.. even if its a stylized or cartoon based game.. you can still go anatomically correct, and i feel like using actual anatomical proportions and strong, healthy figures also promote being in or getting into shape without setting unrealistic standards.

One of my Discord female friends plays a heavily modded Skyrim with some adult mods. I asked her why she plays a heavily modded game, she just said she wanted to make her own OC because Skyrim mods are high quality. Some of her character presets are even shared. So, I don't know why the game developers/designers think that most girls want masculine and unattractive female characters... Being bald is not the problem. You can easily make attractive bald female character.

I prefer to see more conventually attractive women in video game, not what Naughty Dog is offering here (Cloe in the Uncharted games, especially The Lost Legacy is the sort of female character i want to see). They tried to masculinise the main character there way too much, as if they were trying to make her too much like a man, to an extreme degree. You can make a female character a more tomboy girl who likes typically guy things, without trying to just make them essentially men. have met loads of lesbians in my life who were more feminine than that character.

I think there's sexy and there's unrealistically sexy. The girl from the new ND game seems sexy to me, like a girl I would hit on at a party or something. The girl from Stellar Blade looks like a hentai statue I'd be ashamed to display in my bedroom.

As a women, i'm gonna say this. Having masculine female cheracters is okey, same with feminane ones. I just don't get why Naughtydog needed to make her look so much like a man? They can make female cheracters that are masculien without them looking like men.

I personally think we need more cute characters. Sexy women is too much for me, while the masculine women is not attractive. I just want a normal girl (not realistic women necesarily), just your normal woman. Like Mercy, she doesn't feel sexualized, but she is very cute. Also the bald girl could look nice if she just had hair lol.

First impression is everything, then you can talk about personality later. This director always make strong women look so masculine. As if they can only be strong if they look like men.

Honestly, I dont think it should matter if the character is conventionally attractive or not, what should matter is how the character is written and executed on. So often do these concessions to make female characters not sexualized end up falling flat because the writing, which I'd argue is FAR more important than the look of the character, isn't good.
