$2000 in those days was heaps. Equalled my Annual Wage & a trip to LA ( even by ship, because Airfares were extortionate) was something special. Up until the prior year when The Flying Circus won Hoadley’s Battle of The Bands & elected to go to USA, it was the UK that Aussie Bands usually headed for. Work Permits certainly seemed easier to obtain for UK & even The Flying Circus fairly quickly based themselves in Commonwealth friendly Canada where they also fairly quickly signed a Record Deal with Capitol Records & went on to achieve some chart & concert successes. 🙂

Jeff St John & Copperwine were great but not oft mentioned/remembered these days. That 1968 - 1973 period is when Australian Bands began to really emerge and many from these “ early lineups” went on to build significant & long lasting careers, some like Bon, internationally.

I listen to The Zoot all the time. Rubbish recordings, muffled mixes, filled with tape hiss and deterioration noise. But some of the best songs, and greatest performances, ever heard in Australia. Just quietly, a digital remaster wouldn’t hurt.

Drummer Tony Lavis created the Zep Boys along with Dr Alex Krystic(sorry Rob) Tony and Alex approached Rob having been in Angelwitch with him the Vince was recruited… Alex and Tony dropped out temporarily to sit their final exams and when they came back they were told they had been replaced by Warwick Cheadle and John Zac - check out Zep Boys live at The Tivoli on KZbin for what I think was the definitive lineup.
