Great review of the Gotoh bridge! Do you still have the original fret wires on your EX? I also have an old 1989 EX (my first guitar) and I love the neck, but the frets are very worn.

Cheers Martin. This EX does still have the original fret wires yes and they're in good condition, though to be honest I rarely played it. Also, I recently bought a Charvel So-Cal and have sold the EX, (I might regret that as I too loved the neck and it was playing great after the upgrade).

Got a few of these recent Epiphone Les Pauls a '59. Slash AFD, 60's standard, 50's standard and Classic. Honestly can't fault any of them for the money, they aren't a Gibson (though the '59 is as close as you can get!) but they're phenomenal quality and it's great to see them getting the appreciation they deserve. Great video! I hope you're still enjoying the 60's standard

Hello Steve and thanks for your comments. I'm loving the Epi 60's Standard and they are brilliant guitars for the money in my humble opinion. I went off Les Paul's some years ago as they were too heavy for me weight wise, (used to have 5 Gibson LP's back when I still played live). I sold them all and switched to SG's but to be honest, you just can't beat the sound of a good LP. Thanks again.

Hi Paul and thanks for your question. Don't sweat it with scales/modes is the best advice I can give. Learn a bunch and then cherry pick the ones you really like the sound of - there is no real need to learn them all, (unless you want to be a jazz session player that is). Remember too that most scales really just stem from the one master - the MAJOR scale!

Im thinking of buying one of these bridges to put in a kit guitar Im gonna buy, but if i were to get It I would want to change the colour of the hardware on the bridge, since the gotoh bridge is based off the floyd rose, would the Color Stainless Steel Hardware Upgrade Kit from floyd rose work in the gotoh tremolo? Thanks.
@sgt1959Ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for commenting. These Gotoh bridges come in other colours - not just Black. As for the FR hardware upgrade kit - I don't know what that is, so I can't tell you if it would be compatible or not. Before embarking on a job such as fitting a new bridge, you really need to do some thorough research to make sure the new bridge is going to fit. If you're not confident enough, then I suggest you have the work done by a luthier or guitar tech.

Great video. Please answer a question. I have a 2011 Fender Strat American Deluxe guitar that is spec'd to have a compound radius of 9.5" to 14". What radius should the bridge be?. Some say the bridge should be the larger number radius, i.e. 14", and others say it should be a radius larger than 14", i.e. 16" to 20". Which is correct?. I would be very grateful for your response.
@sgt1959Ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for your question. There are different schools of thought when it comes to setting the bridge radius on a compound fingerboard. Technically speaking, the bridge radius should be slightly larger, (flatter), than the flattest part of your fretboard. There is a formula somewhere for working this out, but it's a bit complicated. I have a Charvel with a compound 12" - 16" radius and my bridge is set to 20". Set the action at your 1st and 6th strings first to where they feel comfortable to you and then graduate the height of the other four strings. Example - my Charvel, (measured at the 17th fret): 1st 1.2mm 2nd 1.4mm 3rd 1.6mm 4th 1.7mm 5th 1.9mm 6th 2.1mm It will require experimentation on your part, and also think about what you play - if you play mostly chords then you might like a more pronounced radius. A flatter radius is better for lead, (especially string bending). Hope that helps.

Hi Mel, was there a small capacitor across the two lugs on the volume pot? Ive just replaced the alpha pots on my JV Fretking and it was difficult installing this small capacitor as was hoping the heat of the iron didn't damage it. Great video Mel keep it going.
@sgt19592 ай бұрын
Hi Brian and thanks for the comments. To be honest it was a while ago when I did this guitar so I don't recall if there was a cap on the volume pot. The one on your volume pot is probably a Treble Bleed, (if so it will have a small resistor soldered to the capacitor). Best to turn the heat down on the soldering iron, (if it's adjustable that is), when soldering smaller components. Even if you do manage to damage the cap, they are easily replaced for pennies. Hope that helps.
@brianrobinsob65142 ай бұрын
Thanks for your reply Mel, it was indeed difficult to solder this small capacitor and I was worried that the heat might fry it, but I've heard that these ceramic capacitors are quite tolerant to heat. There was no resistor attached to it though. Still not entirely sure whether to keep the dummy coil.

Hi again Brian. They are quite hardy usually caps - unless you're using 100w+ iron or something. 😂

good stuff mate , i relate to this as ive been solid for 2 months on the c major scale in a linear direction instead of the one position box , i kept adding to the same idea and over 2 months it revealed the fret board to me in a way never seen before , ive also used the c lydian mode on the c major scale really connected allot of points together , working on the note identification on the fretboard also helped alot as they act as lighthouse or anchor points for reference when going up and down the neck , great stuff mate ill steal that idea and add my own 😂👍

Hello, I would like to use it as individual pedals. And use the pedal modulations through the effects loop of the amplifier. I want to use the distortion from my tube amp which sounds great. Is this possible with this pedal. ??
@sgt19592 ай бұрын
Hi William. Unfortunately no - probably the biggest drawback on the ME-50 is that there is no Effect Send / Return loop. It's best used in front of a clean amp. I used it for small pub gigs, mostly in manual mode, through the clean channel of a Marshall DSL 401. That was all I needed and it did the job admirably. Later versions ME-80/90 etc, do have an fx loop, so if that's something you need then I'd go for one of those instead.

@sgt19592 ай бұрын
Thank you that's very kind, and - I honestly don't know! I struggle these days to remember what amp/effects I played yesterday - let alone weeks or months ago. 😂 What I can tell you is that this Gretsch will sound good through any half decent amp - I've even run it through a Peavey keyboard amp - and it still sounded good! Effects wise I tend to stick with overdrive, modulation, (usually chorus), reverb and delay - just the usual stuff.
@julianmorrisco2 ай бұрын
I had one of these when they first came out. Then I went down the full modelling route with a Variax and Pod XT Live and then Tone-X Yada yada. But a couple of years ago, I realised I wasn’t playing live regularly anymore and when I did it was often with a small drum kit and PA. So. I pulled out the ME-50, plugged it into my Blackstar 1 watt amp (the one without reverb) and rediscovered the beauty of a simple setup. Knobs for everything, no endless choices of heads, amps and cabs and juts about everything I needed and no more. Ok, I’ve ended up adding my Sansamp (the original one with the DIP switches) because I like what it does to my Les Paul, even into an amp (which is not what it was meant for) and I’m in heaven. The only extra I would like is maybe another delay pedal but I can make do with using the ME-50’s delay and using the modulation with the slowest mod speed to get close to the very subtle slapback/doubling effect I use on almost everything and the main delay for when I want longer delays. I’m trying to get my ‘sound’ without the sansamp (maybe I should retry the top left shaping feature which I usually leave off?) so I only have an amp, the Me-50 and a guitar. That would be truly perfect. The Me-50 is a great little box, it sounds great (which is a baseline) but the manual workflow is just so good. All the benefits of pedals and knobs but no power juggling, no failing connector cables and wonderfully light. I’d recommend something similar for anyone who has a nice guitar, a reasonable valve amp and just wants to play, not just beginners. I have a gig coming up, I might bring the Variax and tone-x for acoustic sounds, or maybe, and just hear me out here, I might just bring my Washburn acoustic-electric!
@sgt19592 ай бұрын
Hi Julian and thanks for your great comments. No options overload with the old ME-50, it's just very 'hands on' in Manual mode. The preset memory mode switching delay is a bit crud, but this was fixed on the later units, (ME-80 / 90 etc).
