I don’t know if you’re still tumbling and working with stones/gems/minerals. I don’t have any chrysoprase spots, but have some pretty dang stunning and damn unique common opals, fire opals, fire agate, and some gem silica but anyways I’d send you a little mixed batch of stones I collected myself over the years can only imagine how some would look rumbled I just ran out of grit and never got more like a fool anyways Enjoyed the video even though it didn’t turn out as you wanted, it’s part of deal I guess. Sure you have many other good batches cheers

I may have missed it but what is the reason for adding Borax to the tumble?
@MarlainaAtkins3 ай бұрын
It acts as a thickening agent to the mix. Some people use sugar. But I prefer borax. It helps to clean the Rocks afterwards as well. Sugar will make it stickier and harder to clean after
@Critical.Thinker3 ай бұрын
@@MarlainaAtkins And the reason for thickening would be? To slow the mixture and minimize scratching?

I don't think that putting a box over the tumbler is a good idea. Back when I tried it, my tumbler got really hot. Plus, I saw a video from some KZbin rock tumbler person talking about how he burned up the motor in his vibratory tumbler. I may be worrying about nothing, but my tumbler really did get very hot. To this day, I keep a fan going on all of my rock tumblers in the summer.
@MarlainaAtkins3 ай бұрын
I totally hear you. And you're probably right. In the summertime you definitely got to be careful and check it often. When I put the box over it I make sure there's a gap at the bottom (about an inch and a half) to allow air flow so it doesn't get too hot. I haven't had any problems with it getting hot but it's pretty cold where I'm at most of the year.

Why did you add Dawn, before you at least rinsed the rocks and tumbler off first? Thanks.
@MarlainaAtkins4 ай бұрын
Because the grit gets super embedded/stuck into/onto the stone and barrel and it helps to clean and loosen the grit on the stone for easier cleaning... Because you still need to clean them afterwards. If you don't do this step it'll take you twice as long or longer to clean them good enough for the next stage. ☺️
@scotts13564 ай бұрын
Can I use ceramic and stainless media together for all 4 tumbling stages? I use Borax after stage 1 and 2, to clean everything. You said you used it only on stages 3 and 4. Is it hurting anything by using it on stages 1 and 2? Thank you in advance.
@MarlainaAtkins4 ай бұрын
It probably wouldn't hurt. But I really cannot tell you if stainless is good at all because I have never used that type of media but you can definitely use ceramic in all four stages... as long as you clean it good like you do your stones

Great video! Some people say all you need for the 1st tumble is the grit and "maybe" a drop or two of dish detergent. They don't use the pellets. Can you explain why you use them in the 1st tumble?
@MarlainaAtkins4 ай бұрын
@scotts1356 For the most part theyre right. I don't normally use them in the first stage. The only reason you should is... 1) you don't have enough material to fill barrel, so you can use them to add to make a full load 2) you are using softer material and need to cushion for no bruising during tumble 3) you need a variety of sizes and you only have a certain size stone(s). Adding the pellets will help that scenario for a better tumble. I can't think of any other reasons at the moment but adding them sure can't hurt anything. But I always recommend using ceramic pellets in coarse if you're going to because it will ruin plastic pellets fairly quickly. I hope that helps! Cheers
