This is great, Marlaina, as I was just thinking I ought to look into how to oil some of my finds. You are right, looks super simple to do. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Malaina! That was a great hack for our rocks! Showing us the before and after shots of the rocks it really does make a huge difference. Ive seen people who actually even soak them in mineral oil. They look great!

I’ve used mineral oil on various rocks as well, but I like how you applied the mineral oil and did not know I should let it sit a few hours before rubbing it off. Thank you! While watching this episode today. I was applying clear nail polish to some small thunder eggs. I do not have the equipment to make them shine, other than a tumbler and I was afraid to tumble them. The nail polish made them shine. For how long, the will tell!

Thanks! Lapidary equipment is super expensive... I completely understand. I think nail polish is a fine idea! Especially if it's a lacquer. Would probably last awhile... May yellow and crack over time... But will work just fine. I've known people to use varnish or a clear acrylic coating that seems to last a long time too. Let me know in the future how it goes! Best wishes✨

Can I use this to shine up my pyrite that has natural cubes?
@MarlainaAtkins

I would not use any oil on pyrite. You could try a silver cloth. I'm not sure otherwise... sorry 😕 Best of luck

Can this also work for crystal bracelets? Does it feel oily to touch? And cannot get it wet?
@MarlainaAtkins
@MarlainaAtkins 9 ай бұрын
I've actually tried it on a small bead bracelet and the only problem is the oil gets stuck in the bead hole and it's hard to get out. But if you manage to wipe off all the oil it really doesn't leave any oil residue on your skin. But you will have to reapply over time

Can you handle your rocks after you have mineraled them or will it get all over? And you have to just let them sit and look at them?

Does anyone know if it’s dangerous to use on your stones if you have them in a glass display cabinet with lights? As my bottle of mineral oil says it’s flammable.
@MarlainaAtkins
@MarlainaAtkins 6 ай бұрын
Being that you are wiping off all the oil till you can handle it without leaving any oil residue on fingers/ hands... I would think your stones wil be safe under your lights. I've had mine in display cases fir days under high light and heat and had no problem at all. Hope this helps. Best wishes to you 💫

Does the mineral oil attract dirt over time or need to be reapplied?
@MarlainaAtkins
@MarlainaAtkins Жыл бұрын
I haven't noticed it attracting dirt much (I dust my collection a lot) but I suppose it could. The oil does need to be reapplied over time. Heating up the oil makes it last longer but it can be tricky to do without creating fractures. If you can... while it's soaking in the oil...let it sit in the sun for a few hours...it will heat up gradually...and then wipe it off... the effect will last longer before having to reapply

Could I oil a Malachite slice ?
@MarlainaAtkins
@MarlainaAtkins Жыл бұрын
Good question...🤔 honestly I personally would not...even tho I suppose you could. Not quite sure if it would damage the stone nor if it would show a big difference. You could always test a spot... let it sit for a few minutes and see if it does anything. But keep in mind that malachite is toxic and you might want to look into it more before messing with it. I wish I could be more help. Best wishes to you!✨

My fear is that the oil will yellow over time
@MarlainaAtkins
@MarlainaAtkins Жыл бұрын
You will have to reapply at some point. I haven't noticed yellowing but it will start to look a little whitish. I usually just clean with soap and water and reapply oil. You can soak crystal in oil in an oven safe container @ 350 degrees for 20min... Take out and let cool to touch... Then wipe off with towel. That process works A LOT better and lasts A LOT longer between applications.
