I wish someone would make one with a touchscreen, that's over 3 inch at least and have metal flush surfaces power button on the front not back and is accurate for swr and power output ect. Simple Data also usb c port for charging and 1 for firmware that's open source. For under 80£(100$) that can be used portable for hand radios up to 150watts,that would be enough for me, thst I don't have to buy over the years New stuff for different radios and Handel's all HAM Frequencys. Maybe a dream that can't come true for a Newbi.🤔😂

Thanks Chuck on the Xiegu VG4 antenna. I used your measurements from the video and it work great. When I installed it 20ft up in the air with the help from my Son it worked like a champ! Jumped on the radio made a couple contacts to Sweden on 10m and a couple POTA activations in the US on 20m. I think I will enjoy the use of the new antenna. Thanks again! Frank W1VBX in Maine.

Meshtastic is like anything else ham radio, it's kind of boring if you don't have people to talk to. That's how I spent most of my beginning General and Extra life until I got into digital modes and CW. Meshtastic also sucks for road travel unless you land yourself into a high-concentration mesh area. I got a lot of my meshtastic gear because someone gave up with no success and sold me all of his stuff.

Why don't they allow you pair your phone with it, access all the programming, build custom freq programming, and send APRS messages from your phone? They could even integrate the repeater guide for quick programming changes on the road. It's 2024 ffs. Instead they made the screen smaller and added a bunch of physical buttons.

I spent most of my time talking to myself, no one else in my area has it. I haven't checked since last year, but I have a nicer antenna I've been meaning to put up since then. I have 2way radios that can message out that's way more powerful than this tool making me not have motivation to return at this point. I get it has encryption and is license free, but I have a lot of noise, trees and valleys making it hard to get out a few blocks.

As much as I want to try Meshtastic, and as much as people sing it's praises, I think it's very overhyped for what's actually doable. Maybe as it grows more popular things might improve, but I just don't think it's there yet.
@jopshua470310 күн бұрын
People tend to get overexcited about it after watching a bunch of videos and buying their first one (usually before they realize you absolutely have to have elevation advantage as low power as these things are). In my experience it's taken learning what the right hardware is and multiple people planning/working together to achieve reliable coverage for ground level/indoor nodes across a given area. I've probably blown around three hundred to date. I figured out from my mesh buddies how to build a node that does as much as I can expect it to when it's about 25-30' up for around $100. Without solar it lasts at least a month on a charge. I still haven't gotten the solar one positioned well enough to get much charge on it. Now I just let it sit and watch trends as the mesh grows. Very little communication occurs outside of my mesh buddies who are radio guys who just want it as a hurricane/cellular down backup comm.

Remember 900 MHZ in low power. Height is might . Antenna gain helps a lot. Good short coax. And when hopping threw nodes ,each one has to reach each outher or the message will not make it. Getting more better nodes on the network will help a whole bunch. Andy Kirby has done a lot of Meshtastic videos . Just remember he is in UK and their band is slight different. Close enough that just adjust antenna for US band plain. And get the US version. We also have a 433 MHZ type as well. What you need is a few good high point nodes in the network and you will get great range. Look at where you are at . You have to see the outher node. line of sight. All them hills and valleys just get in the way . Keep trying with it. get some friends to join the network. 73

I’ve been playing with a Heltec V3 for the past few months. It’s in a Muzi Works case and originally had a little stubby antenna on it. I recently changed over to the “upgraded” whip antenna that Muzi Works is offering now, and it seems to be picking up a lot more nodes at home in Boise and at work in Fresno than it would with the stubby. I’ve tried to get a response on LongFast a few times, however nobody ever comes back to me. I think the problem is that it is still a new technology, and people aren’t really committed to having them tethered to their phones all the time, or monitoring the messages all the time. Maybe that would change over time. I’m guilty of it as well. Mine are sitting in a drawer, powered down right now. And I only get them out once in awhile to see if there are more nodes showing up in my area. The battery life on mine isn’t great, so I would basically have to keep it plugged in all the time, and the usb-c port is on the bottom so it doesn’t sit upright very well when there’s a cord sticking out the bottom. I hope Meshtastic continues to gain popularity, because I think it could be a really cool technology for use outside of cellular coverage, or if the cellular towers go out.

Being Meshtashtic ignorant, if I struggle to get my friends on FRS or GMRS, how would I get them on Mesh? It seems, being ignorant, that unless I have a mesh of associates willing to Mesh, why should I Mesh? Thanks for the video and 73, Bill.
@Q12_10 күн бұрын
Well I can tell you it's different for everyone. With me, GMRS was the Foot in the door, and one year later I'm an Amateur Extra. Preparedness for preparedness sake was what did it for me. If you look at the newest Batch of Hams, they are allll from the Hurricane Disaster Zone. Just food for thought to spit ball towards your friends, The gist is "I'd rather Be Ready, Than Get Ready." I found the easiest thing to do is Throw my old Baofengs their way loaded with FRS/GMRS/MURS/ Local analog frequencies within their area. Out of the 6 I've Issued, only 1 has took the Jump into the rabbit hole. Perhaps someone else has better experience on how to rope in friends into the Hobby but from what it seems like, a Disaster may be needed to push the rest in. Good luck Boss

What kind of SWR are people getting with this antenna? I've built it two different ways and the SWR has been awful (the first attempt was adjustable like the original build in the article and I think I barely got it under 3:1 at best. Making it a fixed length like the video suggests leaves me over 5:1 and confused as to how to even try and fix my second build and I used much more expensive materials this time because all the links to the materials in the video are dead.
@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures11 күн бұрын
My swr was under 1.5:1 , are you getting it in the air?
@jopshua470310 күн бұрын
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures I can try to rig something to get it in the air (before I give up on this completely and buy a pre made one for barely more than I've got in this project now 😂) but it didn't seem that relevant to me. The SWR is awful, 3 or 4:1 at the top and bottom of the band and a bell curve up to nearly 8:1 right in the middle of the band. I built it of 2x2 and copper pipe so it's kinda heavy and would require some thought and effort to elevate it correctly.
@jopshua470310 күн бұрын
D'oh, I tried a different handheld as the power source and it was around 2-2.5 across the band. Think my other HT may be kaput. Still would love to get it closer to your numbers but I can work with this I believe.

The only reason I picked the 710 over a shack in the box is because if the 710 goes down, I still have 2m 70cm on another radio on the bench. Shack in a box, you send your radio in for service, you lose all your base radios.

@@HamRadioN0CKL You don't have to tie a knot, there is enough friction built into the winder. Or you can add a ring terminal, that's the beauty of our winder you can make it yours by doing what you like. We encourage the builder to think outside the box.
