From my personal experience, If Doc Ellis was really tripping on the mound, I think his first 2 innings would be a disaster and then once he sinks into the trip and finds comfort I honestly think he would start playing incredibly well. Even as a pirates fan, I don’t know much about Ellis outside of this infamous moment so I’m curious to know if his performance on supposed substances was better or worse than his average outing.

Fifty cents says Yadi could pitch.

To really understand Yadi’s impact you have to dive into the intangibles that make baseball the game it is. Yadi brought intimidation. How many times did the opposing coaching staff decide not to send the runner with one out, down one, because Yadi was giving the dugout the snake eyes? We can’t count that but I’ve seen it so many times that I know it’s a thing. And there are dozens of opportunities during a game for him to toy with you. I don’t believe in trying to annoint a “ best ever”, but anyone who doesn’t believe Yadi is a hall of famer just doesn’t know baseball. Be offended.

Remembered fondly? When Yadi leaves there will be an official statewide period of mourning. And a statue on the walk of fame.

I dont use this term lightly. But I HATED Adam Dunn. Not because he was good, but just him. I hated him as a baseball player. I would prefer there's a timeline where Adam Dunn manages a Goodyear vs playing the League

He made up for his terrible defense with his 200 strikeouts. That'll get you millions if you can hit 25 homers.

I am not a pro, but I fielded pop ups as an infielder from a pithing machine. There is not a more impossible catch than a 400ft straight up with weird spin(thank you juggs machine), and we made those catches on the regular. Adam Dunn is a great hitter, but an outfielder being challenged by a fly ball to the fence is not a major league outfield skill.

So it is 77 pitches. You ended up skipping 63. You went straight to 64 from 62.

The other thing is that playing deep all the time means more singles on plays where it's not immediately obvious that a different outfielder playing at normal depth would have made the play.

The Dodgers were doing the same thing. That's why they were changing signs every AB. Logan Morrison "I know from first hand accounts that the Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, and Red Sox all have used film to pick signs," Dallas Keuchel "during the course of the playoffs in `17, everybody was using multiple signs,” Joey Votto "The idea that they (the Astros) were the only one doing something wrong just baffles me." Lucas Giolito “Based on everything I’ve heard, it was like all the teams that were in the postseason that year were doing the same shit" Chris Sale "If the Astros were the only team doing it, then yeah. Give it back. Take it back. I know for a fact they weren’t,” Steven Souza “I’m not going to get into to all that but you should know that if you think Houston was the only team with a sign stealing system you’re dead wrong.” Chris Bassitt "...Houston was not the only team doing stuff... one team essentially got caught doing it -- or was the guinea pig of doing it to clean the whole entire league up" Josh Reddick "I was there, so theres my proof" Kris Bryant "Absolutely not. I definitely think others were." Josh Donaldson "Please don’t forget if you were a Yankees/Red Sox fan, none of your guys are (Hall of Famers) because both of them got caught using Apple watches before the Astros got caught.” Erik Kratz “I can tell you that a team that has been to the World Series often recently, we caught them doing something almost similar. The Colorado Rockies were doing the exact same thing in 2018…They used to take a Theragun and bang it on their metal bench. They were doing the exact same thing.” Will Clark “How can I put this mildly? They got caught. All the rest of us, we didn’t get caught."

Adam Dunn's defense wasn't really that bad In fact his WAR on Baseball Reference used to be much higher before they changed the formula for defense and his dWAR magically dropped by ~2 wins a season Traditional statistics imply that he got to a few less balls and made a few more errors than the average fielder but it wasn't egregious most seasons He made up for his lack of speed, catching ability, and mediocre arm with a good jump, good decision making, quick release, and accurate throws Also 2009 was his worst fielding season. In his earlier seasons with the Reds he was probably only costing his team ~5-10 runs a year in the field

Maddux was the greatest pitcher of his time. I always love him talking about his approach "just throw good pitches". But good to him wasn't unhittable - it was a pitch that he could get an out with. And that's why he won so many games, he was always looking for ways to get the next out, whether or not it is a strike out.

why does it matter the situation? to me, if a guy misplays a 50/50 ball, it should punish the defender exactly the same if theres no one on 0 outs or bases loaded 2 outs. The ACTUAL runs saved is different, but the punishment for the fielder should be the same in both instances, to me. They cannot affect the current situation prior to the ball being hit in play.
