________________________________________________
In the baseball world, 2022 was The Year of Aaron Judge. It was the year of Aaron Judge MVP and Aaron Judge 62 homers. After all, the Aaron Judge home run record, at least for the American League, is one of the game’s greatest accomplishments in recent years. This past season necessitated the signing of a record-breaking Aaron Judge contract, as the Yankees sought to retain his services after some hard fought Aaron Judge negotiations. But that’s what you get when you have the greatest MLB season since Barry Bonds.
The Year of Judge did not end with a New York Yankees World Series or Aaron Judge Triple Crown. The Astros and Luis Arraez put a stop to that. But it will still be remembered for the moment Judge breaks Maris record. Just please ignore everything Roger Maris Jr. has said since the record fell. Of course, 62 was just one of the Aaron Judge 2022 highlights. In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, I point out the Aaron Judge walkoff vs the Blue Jays as a pivotal moment. I also make sure to respect the Aaron Judge defense in centerfield.

Between Judge breaking Maris’ record, Pujols going off in his final season like it was the mid 2000s again, the Mariners making the playoffs for the first time in 21 years, and one of the most unpredictable playoffs of all time (at least on the NL side), the 2022 MLB season might go down as one of the best ever. Crazy that it almost didn’t happen too.

Something I found interesting about this year is that while all of this was going on with Judge stateside, Munetaka Murakami was having an eerily similar dominant season in Japan. While playing for Tokyo's Yakult Swallows (the Mets of Japan, basically), Murakami also set the record for homeruns hit by a Japanese player in a season (56). Similar to Maris' American League record, this isn't the NPB's overall season homerun record (belonging to Curaçaoan Wladimir Balentien with 60), but it was a uniquely prestigious record previously held by the Babe Ruth of Japan Sadaharu Oh. Here's Judge's and Murakami's slash lines for the season. Judge: .311/.425/.686, with 62 homeruns, 131 RBI, along with 111 walks and 175 strikeouts. Murakami: .318/.458/.711, with 56 homeruns, 134 RBI, along with 118 walks and 128 strikeouts. It blows my mind that not only did these two incredible seasons happen in the same year, but that they both happened in the major media mega markets for both leagues. Both seasons also resulted in MVP awards for both men, while also ending in heartbreak as neither managed to win their respective world/Japan series titles. While Judge is 30 and can hopefully keep this pace up for a few more years, Murakami is only 22, and the idea that he could still develop into an even more patient power hitter should scare not only Japan's current pitchers league wide, but also prospective MLB pitchers when he arrives in the states in a few years.

I know you've talked about the pitching win in the Hutchison/deGrom video and the Felix Hernandez video, but as a Phillies fan I'd love to here you detail Steve Carlton's 1972. His 27 wins on a team that won 59 games total is still hard to wrap my head around and it'd be really cool to see a video that goes into detail about how the hell it happened

This really helped put Judge’s season in serious perspective. “Post Bonds” offense really does have to be contextualized… especially as someone who grew up watching those seasons from 2001-2004. Judge etched himself into one of the greatest offensive seasons EVER… and when you’re a Yankee… that means that season is up there with the Mantles, Ruth and Gehrig seasons. Pretty incredible if you ask me.

I was at the game in Milwaukee where he hit No. 58 & 59. This man could have legitimately hit 5 homeruns that day if he got the tiniest bit of lift on some of those other balls in play. I have never seen a baseball get torched that consistently EVER in a game. I’ve seen Mike Stanton and Ryan Braun, Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder and more guys hit nukes over the years but nothing like Aaron Judge on that day in Milwaukee, summer of ‘22.

I remember seeing something, years ago, when Keith Hernandez went to the Mets. His numbers had fallen off from his elite days but with the Mets he made some adjustments and became a steady .300+ hitter again. Apparently a fan had noticed that when he was hitting better he rotated his body in his stance more. In his elite years in St. Louis you could read his jersey number from the centerfield cam. He made that tiny adjustment and hit .306, .311, .309 and .310 over the next 4 seasons.
