MLB has seen over 300 no-hitters, sound some of them were bound to be bad, right? At least bad in relation to typical no-hitters. Here are some examples: the Edwin Jackson no-hitter, the Alec Mills no-hitter, the Dock Ellis no-hitter, and the Ken Johnson no-hitter loss. I’ve always loved bad no-hitters, so I decided to dig up as many as I could possibly fit into a video. Of course, the hook here is the Dock Ellis LSD game. That’s pretty unique story in baseball history.
In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, we’ll talk about games pitched by the likes of Ed Lafitte, Ken Holtzman, and Steve Barber. We’ll focus on some unofficial no-hitters. Remember Hunter Greene’s no hitter loss? Remember the Andy Hawkins no-hitter? The Madison Bumgarner 7-inning no-hitter? They all get mentioned.
We’ll also clarify the difference between an official and unofficial no-hitters. The no-hitter rules were clarified in 1991, with specific requirements for innings and hits allowed. I hope you enjoy this presentation about the worst no-hitters in MLB history.

The wildest parts - to me - of the Ellis LSD No-hitter is that ONE. he didn't take the team bus to San Diego and was chilling in LA when he dropped the acid. His friend looked in the paper(how we got news in those days) and told him he was pitching THAT NIGHTs game( a twi-nighter that started at 6pm) in SD.... he got to the park already tripping but everyone thought he was just in his "game zone" and left him alone. He said that pitching that game was easy - "the ball went wherever I wanted". But he said the toughest part was 1. the dugout steps after each inning, once stopping at the top wondering how to get down and 2. Catching the throw back from the catcher - "he said the ball changing size" as it got closer to him . 😂🤣😅

Still, the Fathers did have that nice victory over the 111-win juggernaut Dodgers in the NLDS who, if I’m not mistaken, they couldn’t buy a win from during the regular season. At least your team accomplished that. My Cardinals pathetically got swept against the Phillies in the “Wildcard Round”, giving Albert Pujols an anti-climactic send off to his retirement. Plus, with Fernando Tatis Jr eligible to return to the lineup now in late April, that lineup of your Padres is going to be absolutely sick with Tatis, Machado, & Juan Soto. Talk about murderer’s row. That’s the reincarnation of the ‘27 Yankee lineup😮.

The first ever combined no hitter was thrown by Babe Ruth and Ernie Shore for the Red Sox in 1917. I always thought it was wild how similar the D-backs' first two no-hitters were, considering how different the actual performances were. - Edwin Jackson (2nd no-hitter in franchise history) beat Randy Johnson (1st) in his MLB debut - Jackson was born Sept. 9, Johnson was born Sept. 10 two decades earlier - Johnson also had a 149-pitch game for Arizona, tied with Jackson for the franchise record - They both left the Diamondbacks within a year of throwing their no-hitter - Both of those teams (2004 and 2010) lost 97+ games!

I once made 10 three pointers in a row while tripping hardcore on acid late at night. I was like 17 years old and hanging out with my best friend and we wanted to go outside for a walk to look at the stars. We stopped at the neighborhood park and kind of migrated towards the basketball court. When I started to shoot some baskets I realized that my focus was %100 laser sharp on wanting to shoot the ball with a perfect form. I quickly got into a rhythm and started to make shot after shot. The more baskets I made in row the more it was blowing me and my friends minds. After that night I gained unlimited confidence whenever I stepped onto the court.

I witnessed Liriano no-hit the White Sox for the Twins in 2011 and remember ESPN reporting that based on the game's stats it had about a 1-in-3000 chance of being a no-no. I thought for sure it would make your list. :) From Wiki: "On May 3, 2011, Liriano pitched his first career complete game, a 1-0 no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The no-hitter featured 6 walks, a high (although not record-high) number for a no-hit game. He struck out 2 of the 30 batters he faced and threw 123 pitches, 66 of which were strikes."

My uncle has a wild story about Ken Holtzman. When my uncle was a kid he’d hang around the bullpen at Forbes field and talked to a lot of the players. He’d often pass through baseball cards of these players and get them signed. Cubs came to town and Ken Holtzman was having one of his best seasons. My uncle chatted him up and asked him to sign one of his baseball cards. Ken took the card and proceeded to put a big X on the card and gave It back of my uncle. My uncle proceeded to put jinx on Ken Holtzman, did a little dance and said he wouldn’t win a game for the rest of the year. I’ve done some research and I believe this game was the 6-18-1969 game, and after that game Ken did significantly worse and this was also the year the cubs choked down the stretch and the amazing Mets won the World Series.

Two interesting DBacks notes for this video. 1. Another thing making the Tyler Gilbert No-No more interesting is that the catcher for that game was Daulton Varsho. Daulton Varsho was just the runner up and arguably snubbed for a gold glove… in RIGHT FIELD! And 2. Is that the first half of the double-header in Atlanta was a 1-hit shutout by Zac Gallen. So the DBacks had 2 pitchers combine for 14 innings of 1-hit baseball

One thing that still amazes me after all these years (few humans are still alive to have witnessed it that are around) Is that Don Larsen's perfect game, happend during a WS, game five Yogi is jumping up and down. And Larsen just setps off the mound, as if it was just another game, just another day, as if he was just taking a stroll in the park. We saw the Astros doing it 2022 and they had a huuuuge celeb [rightly so] My Word, imagne a perfect game happening in a World Series, NOW!

Since you got on the subject of nine inning no-hitters that don't officially count, a 23-year-old Pedro Martinez (while with the Expos, in 1995) threw nine perfect innings, but the game went to extras tied 0-0. His team scored in the top of the 10th, but he gave up a double in the 10th and was removed from the game. They did go on to win so he got the W, but he got neither the Perfect Game nor the No Hitter, and in fact for his career he would never throw a No-No.

I was at both of those Pirates games where the opposing pitcher nearly had a no-no. We didn't even realize Rich HIll was perfect until like the 6th inning

On June 28, 2008, The Angels lost to the Dodgers despite Jered Weaver and Jose Arredono combining to allow zero hits. However, the Dodgers were able to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the 5th due to a walk and an unfortunate series of errors. Because the Dodgers were the home team, they did not go up to bat in the bottom of the 9th. Because of this, it technically doesn't even count as a no-hitter.

Dock Ellis' perspective: "The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes, I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me." (From Wiki)

3:47 I see Sean Newcomb is on that list. That was his attempt to secure the Braves' first no-hitter since 1994. Didn't quite work out for him and it was all downhill from there in general.

Here is a scenario to propose, based on the new baseball rules. Pitcher pitches nine perfect innings, but his team has not scored any runs so the game goes into extra innings with score 0-0. 10th inning begins with "ghost" runner on second base. Pitcher with perfect game going continues into 10th inning, he retires all three batters he faces but "ghost" runner scores without any hits or errors (stolen base, groundout, sacrifice fly, etc.). His team does not score in the 10th inning, so he loses 1-0 even though he got all 30 batters out that he faced. Would that be considered a perfect game? Another scenario is that the "ghost" runner is caught stealing, picked off, or erased on a double play. Thus, if his team does score and he wins, then he would earn credit for a perfect game, but he would have faced only 29 batters in 10 full innings.
