Great video. Sometimes really good streams are hiding in plain sight. People drive by and think nothing of them. There is one within walking distance of me here in central PA... practically in town. Finally tried it this Spring and caught a 14" brown in a stream about the size of yours today. Great fun.

Out of all the wild trout fishing i do i finally met a conservation officer fishing for wilds in NY recently. Never did in NJ or PA. Maybe at lakes and stocked trout streams but never while going for wild trout. They seem to have a better care and patrol for their resources :) ! I had a great interaction with them too, mostly talked about local brook trout stuff in the area and got advice as a non-resident. He actually hiked in almost a quarter mile through the woods just to find me too. Awesome commitment and it surprised me in a good way lol. Step 2 on looking at maps; there's a lot of nifty tools you can combine with it such as tax maps, state maps of what is public land and what is accessible, and google street views. Often there's a nice trail head somewhere far that you can hike into vs a bridge. Or you can park somewhere down the road and find a place to park away and walk the road to get into a public stream that lacks parking immediately there. NY DEC will list some state parks with fishing information and give a quick description of any wild trout too. So if you're curious about a creek, look up if it's state park and check DEC's website on it. PA has an incredible trout-map showing where there is likely-natural reproduction, along with Class A. Mind they dont have everything and some creeks in fact do have wild trout. NJ has similar. I actually like how NY doesnt have it well defined on maps. One thing i look out for is the mileage of what the creek is. Often 2 miles is a nice creek to fish, any more the better, it has enough water. 1 mile can be sketchy. Be sure to acknowledge any lakes upstream can warm up the water and sorta reduce the likelihood of wild trout. Lastly, Google Earth can help going back to historical satellite views of winter months; when there are less trees on the leaves ideally. That way you can determine how wide a creek is or if it's looking like a really skinny headwater. Also helps with seeing if there's good side parking in case there's no street view. This is all good stuff to do at home if you're bored and save a few gallons in the gas tank :P but as you mentioned, just going out there and driving is really good. At home i set up pins on stuff i want to check out and get a driving plan on what to scout out for when i go out. Summer is a great time too especially during near-droughts to see if the creek even has water normally.

Wow, its crazy you've overlooked this stream all this time, turned out to be a gem. As per usual when I watch your videos I'm trying to learn something. What was your take on why the AM was challenging? Looks like that stream got some recent rain, were there many risers or were most hook ups on nymphs?
@deaddriftoutdoors2940
@deaddriftoutdoors2940 2 күн бұрын
Yeah it is just one of those streams that you barely see from the road and I was on the way to someplace else. Glad I took the time to explore. I didn't include much footage of the early hours in the video, the habitat was not quite as good and the likely spots had lots of woody debris and were tough to approach, spooked quite a few. It had got rain a few days before so I would imagine when its low its even trickier. I saw 0 rises and got them all on the nymph. Missed one strike on a dry in the evening. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it!

just subscribed for the creek trout fishing, but the adirondack lake fishing is nice to see. I usually do an annual camping trip there in the spring but had to cancel this year's. Sorry, John to bug with more questions, but where were these little trout streams when I was a kid growing up in Geneva in the 60's? When were these browns introduced to this part of NY?
@couponvillage
@couponvillage 3 күн бұрын
I grew up in the region in the 50's and 60's (east of you) and I've thought a lot about the production and availability of these streams that we see on these vids. Improved habitat, far less pollution, improved water quality, less intense farming and fish/game control mandates all add to the excellence of what we see. I can specifically remember an entire watershed in Onandaga cty being wiped out by a flash pollution/poisoning event in '66, leaving behind vast numbers of trout, including some huge old browns, dead and floating. Made grown men cry! I fished one stream near Wellsville in the southern tier in '67 and watched a massive half dead brown float by with the water polluted by indiscriminate oil well waste. I fished the beautiful, clear running Juniata river in central PA in 2008 and caught bucketloads of nice browns. But back in the 60's, the Juniata was so polluted as to be virtually unfishable. I'm not a crazy environmentalist but I do think the multiple measures employed by all add to a much improved resource for the region. BTW - I absolutely love these videos. I'm an old guy stuck in Florida now and Jon's slice of home is a treat for me!

@@couponvillage Thank you for your time and input. Very good insight on the pollution aspect. I do remember catching a few browns from the Cohocton in the early 60s. I'm not sure when they were stocked but most of these small streams haven't been stocked in years and the water quality is decent in most of the them to support the wild browns, unfortunately brookies are very rare in this area. I have an old guide that I have used to find a few of these and some of them describe brookies in a few of them but I have only encountered a couple spots that still have them. Overall though I think the water quality on many streams did actually improve a ton after the clean water act in the 70s.

i grew up in Union County, PA, there was a cold, mountain stream loaded with native brookies. Would spend basically every day of the summer on this particular stream pulling out 6-8" brookies. There was one hole, about 400 yards from where I entered, a big tree root system near the head of a pool about 10' from the bottom of a rapid. Maybe was about 6' deep. Threw in a Mepps Black Magic 00 into the rapid and let it drift into the pool. Saw a flash, and my little ultra light setup just bent. Ended up being a 17.5" male brookie. a fantastic fish, showed him to my dad (back in those days, you mounted fish like that), and said that fish was probably 15 years old, and likely was the biggest fish in that stream. Only threats to these fish are the black bears, and the occassional fisherman. That summer, I saw 2 fisherman the entire summer on that stream. Heading back there next week with my 7'6" 3 wt fly rod.

I love your Channel. I can't imagine the work it takes to film something of this caliber. I have one critique.... I see a reoccurring theme. You cast from thin water into a deeper pool and then you bring the trout back into that same water. I see that you try to keep the fish's head up. I know you're doing this so you don't spook the pool. I can't help but remember an article I read on nw steelhead. The biologists found that fly fishermen Landing the steelhead in the shallows increased the mortality by 90%. The recommendation was not Landing them in anything shallower than knee deep water. They said their head thrashing against rocks cause neurological injuries which probably killed them. Please try to remember that when you're dragging fish out of their home pool into riffles that are ankle deep.
@deaddriftoutdoors2940
@deaddriftoutdoors2940 11 күн бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Honestly its refreshing to have "constructive criticism" given in a respectful manner. I do agree with your observations, as I have noticed this myself. I don't think the mortality would be anything close to the study you mentioned for steelhead but I could definitely do a better job in that respect. I used to work in Fisheries and honestly trout were generally pretty resilient. One case in point is the stocking process in remote lakes where they are dropped violently into the lake from the air with limited mortality. But again I appreciate your feedback and will certainly try to do a better job to limit injuries to these special fish! Thanks for the comment!
