Do you happen to know the serial number or model number I can’t seem to find mine or maybe know where to look for it?
@PeterDylingowski-cq2xh15 күн бұрын
Tyler, I have the same engine but a 1954 Johnson 25 hp that someone painted Evinrude blue. I have a problem with the crank cam set up. I looks like the cam needs to be below the flywheel key for the point wipers to ride on it. So the only thing to keep it in place is that pin that would ride in the slot. The flywheel would then be torqued down on top of the cam. Also the original cam is not slotted all the way through. So you would have to slide on the cam then add the key on top. Please comment Thanks Pete

It’s been a while since I’ve done this, but I remember the flywheel holds the cam down on top of the spring. The spring keeps proper preload on the upper crank seal. I remember it was a little finicky, but the cam should be driven by the circular pin and the woodruff key for the flywheel is added after the cam is installed. You should be able to check timing with the proper OMC timing tool if you are unsure if you got everything put together properly. I usually set the points after installing the flywheel through the window. I hope that answers your questions
@PeterDylingowski-cq2xh16 күн бұрын
Very nice. I just picked up its twin a 1954 Johnson 25 hp big twin. I hav a question about the cam for the points. It seems like you have to push the cam below the keyway in order for the points wiper to ride on it. The slot in the cam will ride with the pin sticking out of the lower crank. It looks like you would press down on the cam and spring before you put the crank key in then you would torque the flywheel on. Does this sound right?

these 9.2's always crack me up because i've NEVER heard anyone say they aren't turtle-slow. really bizarre because i happen to love them, minus the slow part. I converted mine to ATOM ignition modules, and it starts and idles like a sewing machine. really one of the smoothest small motors you can still run. great job on this one! its funny when i 1st ran mine i thought it was clogged with carbon in the exhaust:) its even slower than my 9.5 Evinrude and thats saying something!

To me it looks like they took the old 7.5 hp Elgin powerhead and put it in there. I still think one of the old Elgin 5.5 hp engines would outrun it though.

@@ct1762 it’s a west bend design completely and Chrysler just put their name on it. Same powerhead and lower unit as the old Elgins and West Bends. The midsection is different and maybe that’s what screws up the exhaust scavenging

@tylerott9269 it will! I have two of the fiberglass hood Elgin 5.5hp motors and they outdo these 9.2hp, it's crazy. I have an 82 just like this but it's only got one carburetor. The problem you got is coming right back because every rubber hose on the entire fuel system needs to be replaced with alcohol resistant hose. I've seen them set up for a long time and had the Bowl coated with what looks like black tar from the inside of the fuel lines. New alcohol additives in fuels attack the old type rubber. Any older motor needs all lines replaced. Just a tip from a lifetime mechanic
@tylerott92692 ай бұрын
Fuel lines were previously replaced. Looked like a dull knife was used to cut the line and that’s how I think the little chunk got in the carb.
