Cartwright later moved to my home of Oahu. He was the 1st Chief of the Honolulu Fire Dept. and was one of the founders of the 1st public library in Hawaii. He was quite prominent locally and actually served as the executor of the wills of both Queen Emma (wife of Kamehameha IV) and King Kalakaua. He is buried at Oahu Cemetary on Nuuanu Ave. in Honolulu.
