Thanks for the update, and explanation for why some fibreglass stays sticky after use. definitely one area on a gipsy that a lot of owners have problems with and that's rust in their window frames, and the availability of the original profile rubber glass sealing strip/rubbers for the windscreen glass. And as I understand it the only available rubber strip comes from Australia, please correct me if I'm wrong on that fact.

I agree with many of the comments. Sadly, nearly all the RV manufacturers use poor quality parts and even worse quality labor. The old saying, "don't buy something built on a Friday" is usually true. The dealers are nearly useless for repairs and Always busy and slow to fix anything. Don't get one unless you have the ability to make many of the repairs yourself.

I have a terminal fork, but have only ever used it once! If you whack the arm on the outside where the terminal is fitted, 9 times out of 10 the terminal will just pop out - no damage to seal. Just my two cents...
@austingipsysite

Yes that's a way too, but easy to distort the shape of the tapered hole in the arm. Sort of a last resort.

Considerable skills here. I wish mechanics would use the care and attention you demonstrate! I have to wonder where do you source spare parts for near 60 year old Gipsys? Is it from the UK? Finally I note in the background what I recognise as a 60s Steyr Puch Haflinger. This makes an interesting deviation from your Gipsy adherence. The Haflinger has some interesting features including manual diff-locks front and rear. A video on this vehicle would be so cool. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! Parts can be hard to find, most bearings match up by number, and seals I match up by size but even then they can be hard to get. There are a lot of parts that are the same as other vehicles too. That said, I have made a lot of parts (mainly body panels) The Haflinger belongs to a friend, I've been working on it as well. Got it running and driving last winter, it's an amazing vehicle, so well designed and built. Between the locking diffs and suspension it would go anywhere.

This was a standard procedure back when drum brakes were norm, some of my older mentors and family members talked about using some equipment and “shoe arcing” new brakes, it was the way it was supposed to be done.
@austingipsysite
@austingipsysite 3 ай бұрын
That's true, years ago we had an Ammco brake lathe and on the side was an arcing machine. We always fit the shoes to the drum.
@poefter

I have a Ammco radius grinder at my shop, I use to grind relined shoes as standard procedure after relining (and if I have the radius of the brake drum) but I stopped doing it because clients started to complain when they see the linings are thicker in the middle then on the sides. They don't understand the point of radius grinding, in their minds, the ends of the linings will not last as long as the middle of the linings so I started to only do it on request. It's not worth my time and energy trying to explain to 20 people a day why a perfect radius is important. Fortunately the old timers get it and they usually ask for the service. I don't charge for it, I don't know why people just don't trust the guy running a brake shop for a living..
@austingipsysite
@austingipsysite 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, can't help some people! We had to stop arcing brake shoes because workers compensation pretty much banned grinding shoes because of the dust.@@poefter

how much did the gipsy cost in late 1960s in gb pounds .. did it cost more than a landrover 109. i worked a lot on 60s 70s land rovers they are not built as well as a gypsy by a long shot .i had a nasty 109 1963 i got in Gibraltar with many problems to fix . it was rammed in to a tree in reverse by a drunk ships captain who weeks later sold it to me cheap. the gypsy suspension and drive shafts are years ahead of their time on commercial 4x4 model.
@austingipsysite
@austingipsysite 3 ай бұрын
I have an original sales receipt somewhere in my files, as I recall the price was $2,200.00 Canadian. I think they were priced comparable to the Land Rover. The Gipsy definitely looks to be better designed and built, especially the chassis which is fully boxed and air tight, they rarely rust out.

Maybe you did not show in the vid but I thought it would be advisable to pour some kind of lubricant into the cylinders and let it soak a bit before attempting to start an engine which had been sitting for so long. On a different note looking at the rust that Gipsy bodies can develop is the Land Rover aluminium body a great advantage over the Gipsy?
@austingipsysite
@austingipsysite 4 ай бұрын
That's true, a shot of oil down the spark plug holes is a good idea but I neglected to do that this time. The aluminum bodies on the Land rovers definitely had the advantage over the steel bodied Gipsy, but the LR chassis tended to rust whereas the Gipsy chassis was boxed and air tight so they lasted much longer.
@78a67h
@78a67h 4 ай бұрын
@@austingipsysite Thanks for the clarification and I can understand that better to have to deal with rust on the body than rust on the frame. The Gipsy is also much rarer esp these days so much more of a collector's item. Somebody once said that the Series Land Rover transmission seemed to soak up power whereas in the case of the Gipsy with same displacement engine you had more power delivered to the wheels which if true is a big plus too.
@austingipsysite
@austingipsysite 4 ай бұрын
@@78a67h Yes, definitely easier to repair body panels than to build a new chassis. The Gipsy is definitely rarer than the Land Rover, most people that I meet have never seen one before. I haven't heard of power differences but LR owners that I've taken for a drive always comment on how quiet the Gipsy transmission is.

My first car was a Austin Gipsy 1963 it stayed in the family for 13 years and never broke down, it was not a flexitor car because in Iceland where I live the flexitor cars were not liked leaf springs were easier and I thought that the flexitor Gipsy´s were not manufactured after 1962 but I seem to be wrong there. In the end I swapped the Gipsy for 220 crates of green beens that my father sold and I bought myself a ´67 Mustang. Still I think of my Gipsy and wold like to have it back. This was about 1970.
@austingipsysite
@austingipsysite 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, the flexitor suspension got a bad reputation in the first couple of years (58-59) but by the time the G2 came out they had all of the issues sorted out. It sounds like you did okay with the trade for the Mustang though! I had a 66 that I sold recently, fun car. I've seen pictures of several Gipsys in a yard in Iceland, maybe your old one is still around. (I'm Icelandic on my Mother's side, her Maiden name Finnson)

Guau!! What amazing Austin Gipsy you have. Very pristine and well functional. I would like to share that I have one of this, from my father who passed away in 2012. It’s a 1959 and it works but have a some issues with the carburetor, the brake pump who has a leaking, and the clutch. Maybe because the age and the time who spent outdoors. But Im trying to fix as much as I can in tribute to my father and because I enjoyed this since 1970 when my father bought it. My only concern and question is how to get some parts. Thank you and congratulations for yours. It’s totally awesome!!

Thank you! and I'm glad to hear of another Gipsy out there! The best place to look for parts is on eBay or try Richard at Gipsy spares. www.gipsyspares.com It's best to get new brake and clutch cylinders because the old ones usually have some pitting in them from moisture. Also if you watch my carburetor video you'll see the best solution to a worn out carb.

Thanks for being so candid about your trailer. I'm glad you still like it even though you have had numerous problems. I totally blame it on the current suppliers of components because you can find the same problems on every brand right now. We still like the way these are built compared to some and they're on our short list. Fit and finish is important to us. It' just the RV industry in general right now. A person just needs to really inspect before buying and try the slide several times. Also, we are fortunate to have a great dealer close by.
