I started acquiring Spanish in June this year. I've listened to 1,200 hours of comprehensible input. I've been listening to 7+ hours everyday. My listening comprehension level is very advanced now. I watch a lot of native youtube content. Some movies and series are still a bit tricky in parts but I'm progressing every time. I've done the silent period where I haven't been speaking. The reason for this is to acquire a tremendous amount of input and also acquire a good accent in Spanish. Listening comprehension is only one part, there is also the acquisition of the language where you absorb it unconsciously. If one tries speaking early they'll probably have that typical English accent while speaking in Spanish and they'll struggle to form sentences. I started practicing speaking with conversations around 3 weeks ago. I have around 40 speaking hours. It was difficult at first but the progression happens quite fast. When you've listened to a lot of hours and start speaking, it won't be automatic and fluent though. It's the same for infants when they start speaking after a long silent period, they'll understand everything that is said to them but they'll make mistakes when they do start speaking. If you have children, you'll remember them attempting to talk. It's the same for us adults. It's actually easier for adults because they can already speak. Every hour I do I get better. The level I'm speaking at now is around B1 - B2. Even after a long silent period, there are a lot of mistakes but that is totally normal. With more speaking practice and more input those mistakes will eventually be corrected. We all acquired our native languages in the same way. Language acquisition through input works without a doubt. If you're really interested in acquiring [ not learning ] a language give it a try.

Thank you so much for sharing your language acquisition journey-it’s truly inspiring! The dedication you’ve shown with 1,200 hours of comprehensible input and now transitioning into speaking is incredible. Your detailed explanation about the silent period and its benefits for acquiring a natural accent and sentence formation is spot on, and I love how you’ve related it to how infants acquire their first language. It’s so true that mistakes are a normal and essential part of the process-whether it’s for kids or adults. It’s also amazing to hear how quickly you’ve progressed in just 40 speaking hours, reaching a B1-B2 level! That speaks volumes about the power of input-focused methods. Thanks again for your comment-it’s motivating for anyone thinking about diving into language acquisition. Best of luck as you continue your Spanish adventure, and keep us updated on your progress! 😊

FLUENCY

I did it on purpose. Fluency is more important than accuracy in TPRS.

6:40 The idea of 80% comprehension is something i disagree with. We all learn our native tongue starting with zero comprehension of the words. Comprehending what is going on, is different to comprehending the words. I can understand what is happening in Pepper Pig in Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, etc, even if I cannot "speak" those languages or understand the words being used. Eg, just watching Pepper in a language I do not know, i know that George likes dinosaurs, his favourite colour is blue, he is a boy not a girl, often the teacher says the equal of "now" in the non English language, how Pepper greats groups of people etc. Sure, i will learn quicker with a higher comprehension, but suggesting i need it from the start is a demotivator.

I agree with you. Im learning english now, and im sure I acquire English by understanding what's happening in videos like drama or movies for adults without knowing what's being said. Tho I dont know what was being said, I acquire language. I know that. I think the ALG method is great. it's mostly comprehensible. But it could be boring and discouraging. So if i learn another language and have 10 hours a day, I would spend my 1 or 2 hours for comprehensible videos and my 8 or 9 hours for videos that i enjoy watching and be interested in like movies or dramas for adults. It would boost my lanfuage learning journey.

Just a thought. To everybody on here. Think how you learnt your native language. From day 1 to 3 years old, all you did was listen to your parents and everybody else around you. When you were around 3 years old you started speaking, probably with mistake but speaking nonetheless. Your listening comprehension would have been very good as well. Was it achieved through doing grammar? Not a chance.
@Vamos1969 Жыл бұрын
When children move to another country they're immersed in the language from day one. The amount of hours per week they'll spend in school and out playing with their new friends is a lot. The difference I see between Children and their parents is the children sound like pure natives when they do learn the language, the parents don't. Something I noticed a lot in Spain.
@EmuallimАй бұрын
Absolutely right. Parents could do something similar by changing the language of their mobile phones from their native language to the target language and consuming content only in the target language. That's what I've been doing over the past decade.

Well, we have two ears, but only one mouth. Other wisdom proverbs tell us to listen first. Why can't the same be true for language learning? I've studied Spanish for about 3 years through duolingo and other traditional methods. Maybe it's time I gave this natural listening approach a try?
@Emuallim Жыл бұрын
Bro, you should definitely give TPRS Spanish a try. You can find pretty much everything you need at www.tprsbooks.com/free-resources/ but you need to create an account first to have access to the free resources

Too bad that adults usually can't spend several hours every day just listening to their target language, and usually need to be able to communicate in the language asap. However, I'm going to try an abreviated version of this for French. First two months will be only listening to the language, adding in learning to articulate the sounds in the second month, almost like a baby babbling. Then a combo of Pimsleur and Rosetta stone as my courses.
@Emuallim Жыл бұрын
you are right. as an adult, its almost impossible for me to sit in a class and listen to a teach for several hours every day to get a ton of input for several months but the thing is ALG is just one of the so called "comprehensible input" based approaches out there. I would suggest that you youtube search for "TPRS French" and I'm sure you will get some amazing videos that can help you master the basics of the language. Good luck!

this approach of learning a new language reminds me of the movie "The 13th Warrior" where the Arab diplomat was listening to the Norsemen as they traveled up the Volga River. over time, the Arab was able to understand and speak Old Norse.

Thanks for this wonderful video. I really appreciate your time. It´s helpful knowing that there are other people that did the shift. I've just discovered TPRS doing research as to teach in better and useful way. I am an English teacher in Spain and I would like to start this year with my students. I´ll do the best I can but I feel a little bit anxious and insecure. My highschool uses text books so I don´t really know if this will be accepted. Could I ask you something? I'm very bad with technology and I would like to know if there´s a place to find some videostories, ppt stories, etc... to be used with teens. I am starting from 0 knowledge and I am a bit overwhelmed but I want to do it. Thanks for your time

Hello @gemmasans2862, sorry for such a long delay. You can find pretty much everything you need at www.tprsbooks.com/free-resources/ but you need to create an account first to have access to the resources. If, however, your school doesn't allow you to use external resources during class, you can take a short text, any text, from your textbook and use TPRS circling to teach it and do it for 5-10 minutes every day. Start small and soon you will be able to teach an entire 60 minute class using only TPRS. Good luck! PS sorry for the delay.

I get the concept, but how on earth should an adult just not speak when he is required to, like at a job? A child can easily not respond because it is normal for small children not to talk back sometimes, but if you're an adult at a job, you cannot just stay quiet the whole time. How would one use this concept in such a situation?
@Emuallim Жыл бұрын
This isn't about not speaking at all. It's about learning a language naturally while in class and practice it outside the class.
