this approach of learning a new language reminds me of the movie "The 13th Warrior" where the Arab diplomat was listening to the Norsemen as they traveled up the Volga River. over time, the Arab was able to understand and speak Old Norse.

I actually did this. I decided to shut up and listen at the age of 16. I really didn't force myself to speak until I got to college. And it was much easier then. Now, I sound like a native even though I didn't start to learn till that age. I'm doing the same thing for Spanish now.

It really does prove the point that it works Mahed. When you think of all the different accents people have in the UK for example. Why do they sound the same? We have Scotland, Liverpool, Newcastle, Yorkshire, London etc. All totally different accents. They were acquired through listening then later repeating and talking.

When children move to another country they're immersed in the language from day one. The amount of hours per week they'll spend in school and out playing with their new friends is a lot. The difference I see between Children and their parents is the children sound like pure natives when they do learn the language, the parents don't. Something I noticed a lot in Spain.

Just a thought. To everybody on here. Think how you learnt your native language. From day 1 to 3 years old, all you did was listen to your parents and everybody else around you. When you were around 3 years old you started speaking, probably with mistake but speaking nonetheless. Your listening comprehension would have been very good as well. Was it achieved through doing grammar? Not a chance.

Actually I have just realised that I learnt Russian in this way It's amazing So cool. I loved Korean doramas and translations were available only in Russian so I decided to watch at least my faves without understanding 😅 It seemed to me in the very beginning "Blah Blah нет blah да blah может blahhh..." 🤣 But I understand 70-80% now while watching maybe 90%😁

Russian is the second most common language in my country but I have to admit I have a hard time speaking Russian :) I can speak it "fluently" but russians don't understand me so its their problem, not mine :) its amazing how your brain figured out the meaning of words but simply watching the Korean dramas. Too bad that adults usually can't spend several hours every day just listening to their target language, and usually need to be able to communicate in the language asap. However, I'm going to try an abreviated version of this for French. First two months will be only listening to the language, adding in learning to articulate the sounds in the second month, almost like a baby babbling. Then a combo of Pimsleur and Rosetta stone as my courses.

you are right. as an adult, its almost impossible for me to sit in a class and listen to a teach for several hours every day to get a ton of input for several months but the thing is ALG is just one of the so called "comprehensible input" based approaches out there. I would suggest that you youtube search for "TPRS French" and I'm sure you will get some amazing videos that can help you master the basics of the language. Good luck!

Well, we have two ears, but only one mouth. Other wisdom proverbs tell us to listen first. Why can't the same be true for language learning? I've studied Spanish for about 3 years through duolingo and other traditional methods. Maybe it's time I gave this natural listening approach a try?

7:51 "คิดอย่างไรกับประเทศไทย" right? :) I can't thank you enough for making this video. Though I can't just listen only for a year cause I need to speak with my students, I'll try to do it as often as I can. From now on, I'll watch movies without English subtitles. I really need to get out of the comfort zone of subtitles and let my ears do the work. I've been wanting to be able to use English like a native because I want to give my students opportunities to speak with a native speaker. If only I can do that, that'll be very helpful for them. Then I found your video! There's still hope after all! Thanks again! Anyway, do you have any resources to recommend?
@Emuallim

You are absolutely welcome! For adults, only listening without speaking might be too big of a challenge as they have to communicate with people every day but if you increase the number of minutes or hours you spend listening to English, you can feel the improvement in several months. Students like to take their teachers as their role models and that's why for you to be able to speak like a native would give your students the motivation they need to work harder on their English. As for resources, I like manythings.org/voa/stories/

@@Emuallim I mean you need a teacher that can understand you in your native language and that can speak your target language back to you fluently. After reading into it a lot though I found out that these classes are no longer offered at the university where it was invented because of covid but now the same teachers have left and began their own online schools so there is hope for the rest of us maybe through this method. I hope to see more language teachers begin implementing this in the near future.

6:40 The idea of 80% comprehension is something i disagree with. We all learn our native tongue starting with zero comprehension of the words. Comprehending what is going on, is different to comprehending the words. I can understand what is happening in Pepper Pig in Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, etc, even if I cannot "speak" those languages or understand the words being used. Eg, just watching Pepper in a language I do not know, i know that George likes dinosaurs, his favourite colour is blue, he is a boy not a girl, often the teacher says the equal of "now" in the non English language, how Pepper greats groups of people etc. Sure, i will learn quicker with a higher comprehension, but suggesting i need it from the start is a demotivator.

I agree with you. Im learning english now, and im sure I acquire English by understanding what's happening in videos like drama or movies for adults without knowing what's being said. Tho I dont know what was being said, I acquire language. I know that. I think the ALG method is great. it's mostly comprehensible. But it could be boring and discouraging. So if i learn another language and have 10 hours a day, I would spend my 1 or 2 hours for comprehensible videos and my 8 or 9 hours for videos that i enjoy watching and be interested in like movies or dramas for adults. It would boost my lanfuage learning journey.

Does this apply to reading as well? Reading out loud without effort at analysing the text? (Assuming one managed to have the accent right from the beginning using the pimsleur method)
@Emuallim
@Emuallim Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend reading out loud as it leads to learning mispronounced words and being unable to understand them when they are pronounced correctly. It's better to a native speaker reading the text. ALG is better than the Pimsleur method b/c it focuses on comprehensible input.

I get the concept, but how on earth should an adult just not speak when he is required to, like at a job? A child can easily not respond because it is normal for small children not to talk back sometimes, but if you're an adult at a job, you cannot just stay quiet the whole time. How would one use this concept in such a situation?
@Emuallim
@Emuallim Жыл бұрын
This isn't about not speaking at all. It's about learning a language naturally while in class and practice it outside the class.
