Doing research for bigbore airguns. Need .458 300 grn projectile. I’d like to be able use both pure lead and also wheel weights. What is the hardness of what you are swaging here? Is it hard cast lead or softer lead?
@cdcropper
@cdcropper 9 күн бұрын
@@motorgearhead it’s soft lead, my advice to you would be to stay away from wheel weights unless you are casting. The RCE equipment will most likely be able to swage wheel weight alloy but it puts an extremely high pressure in your equipment. I don’t know if Corbin S series stuff will stay together I know Blackmon and Corbin M series will not.

@@cdcropper - thanks for the heads up. I cast and my bigbores do fine with WW lead. That said I do cast with pure but 95% of what I shoot has been WW. Was just investigating what can be done as “next” step to improve consistency of slug weight. Just looking to see if something would be better for ease & consistency. Hard to beat the economy of casting nearly free lead.

@@motorgearheadsorry for the first answer this lead wire I’m using here was hard I’m not sure what the hardness is nor the alloy it was wire that Richard Corbin used to sell. It is not wheel weight alloy. Swaging however is very consistent in terms of projectile weight and consistency. I both cast and swage but swaging in the long term is much less expensive than casting and obviously no heat is required so imo safer. I think RCECO.com has 458 lead dies in stock 🤷‍♂️

@@cdcropper - I saw them. I guess I will need a press and not use a reloading or arbor press? One last question and maybe it’s a stupid one. Could I swaged bullets I’ve already cast? Basically use a bullet mold as a core mold? Maybe that isn’t the best way. Think Corbin may have an adjustable core mold. I’m guessing that would be better.

Most likely you don’t have the proper powder shot wad hull combination all 3 of those items must take up a specific amount of space in the hull, if you are sure this is all correct back the plunger on your final crimp station all the way out and see if this fixes the issue

Great video on the 600jr! Had to laugh when you mentioned the nitro cards and cushion wads. When I started loading in the early to mid 1960s, that's all there was. Then there was the plastic "H" wad that replaced the nitro card and finally the one-piece wad we know today. One tip I would add is when adjusting the cam at the final station, loosen the screw just enough to allow you to move the cam. Then hold the cam in place as you retighten the screw. My experience has been the cam wants to walk out of position as you tighten the screw if you don't. You are correct, it can be a little tedious setting the machine up, especially the final station. But once it's set up you should be able to load thousands of shells without any problems or issues. Any changes after the initial set up should only require a little tweak. Patience can be the most important tool in your kit.

@@cdcropper Always a possibility I suppose. MEC sells a go-no shell checker that should aid in troubleshooting a suspected worn out resizing ring. The shell checker is more expensive than a replacement ring but may be useful if you load for more than one gauge or you're trouble shooting chambering problems, especially with pump or autoloading shotguns. I've never used the shell checker so I can't give any personal feedback, but reviews are generally positive.

One of the shortfalls of this reloaded is smaller shot wants to ride the charge bar and jam things up. Through years of using these loaders I’ve learned to slap the charge bar instead of gently pushing it. It works better for me. If you look at the newer bars you will see they have a rubber insert in them intended to help with this but in my opinion they don’t help much. Try slapping the charge bar from side to side not gently and see if that helps you
@jamesp739

@@cdcropper You are correct sir. Occasionally, the bar wants to shear a pellet or two as you move the bar to drop the shot. I use the "slap" technique as well. And you are correct on the bars with the rubber insert as well. It helps some but not much.

Most often you won't save anything when reloading 12ga and 20ga shot loads. Even if you already got the hulls, good but now you gotta calculate into the whole cost the reloader, wads, primers, powder, lead shot, and a few other misc tools/supplies. I don't bother reloading shot loads since I can easily buy them in bulk saving A LOT of money, however the retailers are FLAT OUT GOUGING the consumers on their slug loads which will easily drain your wallet quite quick and so that's why I load nothing but slug loads. The only way I save A LOT of money was by going to flea markets where I found my Mec 500 Jr 12ga reloader for 65.00 and the 20ga reloader for 80.00. I then bought wheel weights that the local service garages turn in at our local recycling business whereby they literally sold me a half-filled 55gal drum full of lead wheel weights for 22cents per lb. I get the IMR Hi-Score 800x powder in the 8lb jug for approx 85.00 The wads I often get in the 500count bags for under 15.00 and the primers I buy 1,000 at a time from Cabela's because they often have sales on them near Christmas time. Use your propane burner to melt the lead making 1lb castings. Put the lead bars in your Lee 20lb pot. Drop the lead into your 20.00 Lee 12ga Key-Drive slug mold and I found the Lyman's 20ga 355gr sabot slug mold for 35.00 used on Ebay. Well, since I just bought my first 410 shotgun that's the Mossberg 500e pump action, I'm doing my rounds on the 410 reloading videos to see if it's worth reloading in the long run. I know for now that I was just at wally world and their Winchester AA .410 2 1/2" 8shot ammo that comes in a box of 100 was 37.00 before tax but yet I also bought a box of 100 20ga for 22.00 AND SO THAT'S BULLCHIT....Would like for wally world and or the manufacture to explain without lying as to why theyre gouging us on 410 ammo that is quite common/practical but yet at least half the size of 20ga and 12 ga
