Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. They had lots of great songs such as "Simple Man", "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Gimme Three Steps", "Saturday Night Special" etc.

Agreed, after Street Survivors or maybe after their 1987 Southern By The Grace of God, Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Your 1987 album with the surviving members Gary, Allen, Billy, Leon, and Artemus, the band became a hodgepodge of members and were more like a tribute band. ✌️

Their high school gym coach was named Leonard (Leon) Skinner who always chided them about their long hair. The guys quit school and started playing music. Their rehearsal space was affectionately known as the Hell House because it was an old tin roofed cabin next to Peter's Creek in Green Cove Springs FL with no air conditioning, which is a necessity in Florida's heat and humidity. They would rehearse there 8-10 hours a day and wrote most of the songs on their 1st 2 albums there as well. Eventually, the members morphed into the original lineup of the band. They got creative in both paying tribute to and giving the finger to Coach Skinner by naming the ban Lynyrd Skynyrd. 👍✌️

I saw them in December 1974 overseas with Queen. Skynyrd was a Southern Band. Singer drinking German beer on stage. Red and blue plaid shirts everywhere. The line in this song that is most important is "I hope Neil Young will remember/Southern man don't need him around anyhow" in response to Young's whiney, rambling "Southern Man."

This just popped up in my feed and Lynyrd Skynyrd's albums were coming out when I was young. So I definitely bond with it. But I would say from a production perspective, it's driving me absolutely nuts that I only hear your voice in my left ear whereas I hear your stereo pad in the background and also the playback content in stereo. And also the content playback volume is so quiet compared to your microphone volume that I've got to turn it down when you talk and then turn it way back up to hear the music. Just some helpful hints to make your world mix come off better. But yeah, I will stick around to hear more.

You need to go much deeper in this band. They are one of the top 3 American rock bands (and could play great blues and country too). The 3 guitarists shown here (Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Ed King) are all incredible lead guitarists, and the pianist (Billy Powell) was classically trained and ROCKED the piano. When King left the band, they brought on Steve Gaines to replace him, and he may have been the best guitarist among them. Leon Wilkison on bass and Artimus Pyle on drums were also superb (although this is Bob Burns on drums here - early drummer for the band). Their song catalog is fantastic - besides Sweet Home Alabama, try Simple Man, Call Me the Breeze, T for Texas, Freebird, Four Wall of Raiford, Curtis Loew, All I Can Do is Write About It, That Smell, Whats Your Name, Gimme 3 Steps, Tuesdays Gone, Saturday Night Special, Working for MCA ... I like Lynyrd Skynyrd a lot, but this is the one song of theirs I cannot abide. The cultural context of this is, they're pushing back against Neil Young calling out the southern states (including Alabama) for their barbaric racial injustices. This is one of those things where the correct response is, "Neil's right". Southern pride is fine, but it needs to repudiate the bigotry, not get mad when someone points it out.
