@@artificialhooks7114 if your indicator is in faster water than your fly line, mend downstream so that your fly line doesn’t slow the indicator down. If your fly line is in faster water than the float, mend upstream so that your fly line doesn’t pull your float downstream. You want the float to match the speed of the bubbles. Hope that helps!

Great catch we should throw fly sometime. Also just some advice. Go into quik and change your go pro view. You can get a lot better shots with the wide view setup. Also if you want to upload shorts quik has a setting to change the format to 9:16 Wich will fit the shorts perfectly

@NickWetzel Жыл бұрын
Thanks William! I believe this footage was from late September! You typically do not need to cast very far at all when fishing the surf. Everyone’s intuition is to wade out into hip deep water and fish deep. This may be necessary when there are a lot of fishermen on the beach, but I have seen steelhead cruising the beach in less than one foot of water!

that was a great day of winter steelheading!! i love those mcflyfoam eggs too, work like charm on the pin, i should try the stonefly sometime, i don't think i ever fished with one!
@NickWetzel
@NickWetzel Жыл бұрын
Thanks guys!! McFlyFoam is definitely a great material to work with, and makes the tying process very simple! Stone flies are definitely a bit more work, but there are some fairly simple, yet effective, patterns. Pats rubber legs is one of my favorites. If you have ever fished with a black wooly bugger, you have essentially fished a stone fly, as buggers imitate a range of aquatic food sources such as leeches, hellgrammites, and big stone flies! You can of course choose a pattern that is a bit more realistic or even life like, but fish aren’t that picky. I may have to tie you guys up a dozen of my favorites and send them your way!

I must say, I’m very impressed how you handled it for the first time pinning. Loved the bobber downs and great numbers considering the low and gin clear water conditions. In that case, you only need to run beads, without the skein or roe. Save the eggs for that spring push. Well done, Nick. Love fishing that place, haven’t been there in probably 6 years. Keep it up, great way to fish the Erie and Ontario tribs.

Welcome to the dark side! a few tips , when casting dont let go of the line, instead slowly bring the two fingers to the spool guiding the line to the reel. For drifting, you always have to be upstream of the fish you match the speed of the bottom current by slowing the reel down , the float angle should be such that the top steam is pointing upstream , 30-45 deg depending on the difference in speed. Unlike a small NZ indicator or ESN , the floats, shot have a lot of drag and need some slowing down. Go for 6mm beads and size 10 wide gape hooks snelled. you will land a lot more fish. Unweighted stoneflys and prince-nymphs will kill! Don't use anything over 8lb raven/Sunline FF2 for steelheads. Use a tapered leader ,ie largest shot on the top going down to the smallest, your distance between these shots should be closest on the top and further away on the bottom to mimic the water flow which is fastest on top and slowest on the bottom. The best resource ontariotroutandsteelhead.com/float-fishing/ This is literally all the advice you will need , tight lines!

@@NickWetzel I hear that, I have friends that do both and there's definitely a time and place for them. I love watching the float drop. Goes back to catching bluegills under a bobber as a kid and that nostalgia. But its a lot bigger fish lol. Is that the kingpin kinetic?
@NickWetzel
@NickWetzel Жыл бұрын
@@naplesluck Absolutely! They are both extremely effective methods of catching fish, and it pretty much comes down to what you enjoy more. I can definitely see the utility of a centerpin, especially for larger rivers, but my local creeks are smaller and much more intimate. I feel that fly fishing on these creeks allows me to adapt to rapidly changing water conditions much quicker, whether I need to throw dry droppers, streamers, euro rigs, etc.. I love me some bobber downs as well! Hopefully will have more bobber down footage soon! Yes, I was rocking the Kingpin Kinetic on a Lamiglass X-11! I’m a fan of both, but the X-11 feels a bit heavy. Would like to swap that out eventually.
@naplesluck
@naplesluck Жыл бұрын
@@NickWetzel definitely can see where using the fly rod is more effective on those smaller creeks. I fish a few Erie tribs in NY that are wide but shallow in a lot of places so the fly guys do well. A few deep holes that are better to float fish too so everyone has something to fish. Love the Kinetic, I have the 4.25 inch paired on a simple 11ft 3 riversider and put a lot of fish on the bank with it. Keep crushing fish, enjoy the vids

Hi Terry! Thanks! Yes I do tie my own, and I will have a video out on it within the month! And yes, I will typically run a 2 fly rig with an egg on top and a zonker on the bottom. I will swap those out for nymphs, stoneflies, worms, and buggers on occasion!

@NickWetzel
@NickWetzel 2 жыл бұрын
I typically don’t strip streamers for steelhead besides in the lake or early season when they are in frog water in the creeks. If there’s fish in the current, I’m usually nymphing with eggs, stoneflies, or minnow imitations (mostly white zonkers). You can entice them to eat with twitches or strips, but dead drifting those patterns is far more effective in my opinion! Good luck!

There is no reason to palmer the marabou up the shank, and then wrap right back down over it with thread. You are better off tying it in quick as a tail. There is also no advantage to trimming off the marabou. I never fish a streamer without a couple pieces of crystal flash in it.👍🏽

As a guide in Alaska back in the day of the dinosaur and white buffalo the Kvichak river has native non steelhead sized rainbows that eat 9wt rod reels like candy. A 30" Kvichak rainbow is the fish of a lifetime After a season of guiding salmon and rainbow fly fisherman some of us guide and fish bums would head to the Kispiox river in British Columbia. I cannot imagine catching them on a tenkara rod. Having said that these days my western fly rods and reels are gathering dust. For a few years nowI have a Tenkara USA Sato, and a Dragontail Hellbender. Still not even close to being enough rod for steelhead. Catching a 30" Kvichak river rainbow or a 37" Kispiox river steelhead on a heavy tenkara style rod is something I dream about. I do not reckon those two rivers are approachable as yet with even the best tenkara style rods. Still. I can dream. Cool video flick. Mahalo
