AT THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL, probably Advanced, maybe not at Expert level: Any sport/recreation that involves sliding-on-feet translates immediately. Skating for sure, alpine a good deal, maybe even boardsports. Just the coordination is huge, and the specific strength overlaps enough. Anything where you are constantly starting to fall, and catching yourself without losing time and energy. I don't think it's old advice. It's probably that more people are knocking at the door of Expert level than ever before. Most people didn't used to try that hard, even in races.

I think everyone should have a healthy base diet that covers roughly the base metabolic consumption (your energy consumption without exercise) and then on top of that supplement with carbohydrate rich foods to reach an energy balance where you don't lose weight unintentionally. That way you do get the micronutrients (vitamins etc) but still get enough energy. Obviously eating pasta or rice is probably healthier than eating plain sugar, but in my experience you don't get to 5000 kcal/day without a lot of that coming from sugary foods. The last person in the video isn't really saying that you shouldn't eat junk, but that you shouldn't only eat junk.

I don't think Niskenen "lifts" his feet. I believe each foot elevates off the snow naturally because his hips are forward and, especially, because his knee is driven forward. This posture appears to be efficient, and it also results in the trailing foot/ski coming off the snow. I believe that no Nordic technique is aided by lifting the feet; rather, a foot/ski comes off the snow due to some other motion. In skating, it's the strong side push that lands the skier on the opposite ski with the pushing ski coming off the snow "by itself," so to speak.

I've never heard of using Z1 in a 5 zone system for anything else than warming up. 🤔 High volume low intensity was always referring to Z2/5 based ideally on LT1. (checked and updated regularly) Z2/5 ~= Z1/3 aka easy training, maybe that's where the mix-up comes from.
@xcskiing_universe9 күн бұрын
@@grega.n.1865 the American and Norwegian zones are different. In Norway, everyone uses zone 1 for low intensity training
@astroturd10 күн бұрын
I like to think that for athletes it's best to eat healthy food up to your base metabolism level and on top of that supplement with calorie-rich foods. So basically if you need 5000 kcal per day, then eat up to 2000-2600 kcal of healthy food and on top of that another 2400-3000 kcal which can be in big part sugar. (Pasta etc are great but try eating 3000 kcal of pasta...) Also you should eat sugar before/during/after you train to get good training results and not starve your muscles when they need energy the most.

When you say to go harder in during low intensity workouts, how much are you talking? Around 75% of max hr or even more? Great vid
@xcskiing_universe12 күн бұрын
@@Billmelkstam yes, I mean in the mid 70% range, instead of the low 60s. But it shouldn’t be considered. You can train without a heart rate monitor, and just don’t give a shit about it. Focus on skiing properly for 1-2,5 hours, and it’s gonna work much better than trying to stay below this and that heart rate

Thank you for sharing and sincerity! This “video” (actually, the talk) made me wonder who you are so I looked (for the first time) in the channel description but found nothing. If you have been up to 500 hrs a year and for 15 years total you surely must have done something. It would be interesting to hear your story (pls give a link if you shared it in some old presentation I missed). However, overall frustration that can be felt through this talk tells me that your expectations might have been higher than the achievements (perhaps?)…. Oh, boy…. Let’s just call it “genetics not right” (perhaps ;-)). You surely learned a lot of right things (hard way, but you surely learned). And you have done it way quicker than many of us (as of myself - only by retirement, when the body faded dramatically in comparison, and that s what s really pathetic). Sorry to hear that frustration though. Keep exploring, there s lot more to learn and the journey might be longer than you think :-)

Agree 100%! I only started skiing 3 years ago, my first 2 seasons I cross trained a lot, triathlon in the summer and only skiing during the winter and delegating waxing to my local store, I would usually finish 10-12 min after 1st place (10-15k races) this year I fixed my wax cabin, did over 2500km of roller skiing and let technique dictate HR, as the season started I'm down to 6-7 mins after 1st place, still long ways to go.
