Great video! This is a 4 cylinder engine. It is possible to do a compress test like this on a V6 engine when one bank of the ignition coil and spark plugs are under the intake manifold like the 2GR-FE engine on Lexus RX 350 transverse engine?

This is a great job here. Please, I need your opinion on a BMW i'm working on. The issue is, at high temp, even above 120°C, the fan will not start(that is abnormal). Once you unplug the ects, the fan will come up(normal, showing an open circuit). The confusing part is that, there is no DTC and all measurements are ok. What is your take on this?

@@Jemimah-b1y I would do a voltage drop test from the sensor signal to DME and from the sensor ground to a known good ground. It might have unwanted resistance on the circuit.
@Jemimah-b1y
@Jemimah-b1y 4 күн бұрын
@MRDIAGNOSTECH Thanks, i've done all of these tests. the resistance on the signal wire is around 42ohms and sensor ground 18ohms, which I feel is a normal wire resistance. I began to suspect the DME, i changed the DME, but it was the same(fan not coming on). I tried to on the AC to observe if there would be a difference, NO! Just thinking, can a bad thermostat sensor be a cause?

@@Jemimah-b1y voltage drop using volts, not ohms. It should not exceed 0.100V.
@Jemimah-b1y
@Jemimah-b1y 3 күн бұрын
@MRDIAGNOSTECH woke up to see your response. Your responses are really insightful and helpful. Yeah, voltage drop btw sensor signal and Dme is 0.098v. with the ects unplugged, a measure btw the sensor signal wire and a good ground should give a 4.9v - 5.1v and a measure btw sensor ground and bat+ should give battery voltage(BMW manual) and that is what i'm getting. With the sensor plugged, i measure btw sensor signal(back probed), and ground gives 2.6v after an overnight sleep test. Pls where am i getting it wrong?

Can you do voltage drop testing if the starter is not turning over (no crank)? When starting ignition (no crank) the voltage drop from (-) battery to starter housing is 78mv so good. My voltage drop from (+) battery to B-terminal jumps to OL. Its a new good starter. Starter relay is also good. The voltage drop from (+) battery to S lead is also OL when starting (no crank). ???

for a no crank you should confirm battery voltage at b term and confirm 12 v at the s term when trying to start.

Greatly appreciated. Very well done video. Unfortunately this method will not work with newer Fords and their gateway modules, you need one of their expensive special break out boxes to test all can lines. that box is roughly $600-1000

Bravo, excellent, intuitive description of the can bus function. I have such an issue, I have power at the DLC at pin 16, and good grounds at 4 & 6. But no communication with the PCM through my Scanner. All the fuses checked out good, and for good measure I replaced the PCM Relay in the Power Distribution box. According to the Wiring Diagram for my 98 F150, both the High Bus & Low Bus are located in the PCM. I didn't suspect the communication problem with the PCM because the Truck Runs. But now if I do the Ohms test, I might discover that one of those busses are bad. Recently I had an Alternator that went bad sending a surge through the electrical system, and blowing a 175 amp fuse, all of which I replaced.
