I don't know how you got into this but you just gave hope to a guy, ME, who gave up on fixing his 07 M35 sitting in the parking lot for almost 2 years now. You explained this so simply and with steps that I will watch this video again and actually make notes before going back to my car. symptom on my car: No crank no start 95% of the time when the car is happy, usually on a very cold day, it cranks very well but won't start I connected a consult 3 to scan the network (lucky to have one I paid a lot for). It shows multiple miscommunication between the computers. I have U1000 in ECM and the TCS. I have already removed all the computers on the CAN; The only I cannot get to is the TCM in the TRANS. If I connect a snapon scanner or any scanner able to see all the computers; the only computers I am able to read anything on are the main 4; PCM TCM ABS & Airbag. any other computer will disrupt the scanner and say no communication. example: Intelligent key module, BCM, Anything else (Snapon cannot communicate with a code are you sure it is connected to the DLC? ) Last thing is when I prompt the Consult for a NETWORK DIAG RESULT, it gives me a voltage and specifies this : OPEN CIRCUIT OR SHORT ON THE CAN L OF THE DLC BRANCH LINE. My question is: How can I trace this CAN L wire and know where it is broken. How can I practically do it? I have the multimeter, the breaker box, aligator clips, a power probe 4 and an Open short finder (the one that makes a lot of noise; not very good at using it). I feel so close to the solution; Please if you come accross this and can answwer my question and add anything you think could help ID really appreciate it. Meanwhile, I AM ABOUT TO TAKE NOTES LIKE A STUDENT LOL. THANKS IN ADVANCE

This was sooooooooo helpful. I bot a $30 breakout box and determined that my CAN network was working by repeating all of the tests demonstrated in this video. I connected my $20 DTC code reader to the breakout box and it reported that it could not connect to the HVAC module. Via this process, I avoided hours at the dealer $165 per hour.

This is the best way of explaining Can bus system. Instead of dudes jumping on videos and talking in Mechanic terms that's confusing and long. Trying to explain how their fancy equipment work and what it does with out breaking it down like this dude. I must've seen a thousand print outs on here explaining wiring at what goes to where. It means nothing if you can't understand it or what's what. And most don't bother telling us there's a network involved. Proper breakdown here!

Brilliant tutorial. I’ve a no crank no start at the moment but needed to know if I had any shorts. I’d tested my resistance which was good but didn’t know about the difference in voltage between high and low. I’ve now tested this and I’ve got what I should have so I can move forward and test some more.

You cant beat a simplified drawing to teach the CAN bus. Very well done. I would like to add one thing. When using the multimeter the voltage and resistance will auto-range unless you change it. So, for example, you may be reading 12.50 millivolts instead of 12.50 volts. If you aren't paying attention to the digit after the voltage numbers you could end up chasing your tail. Same goes for resistance readings. I (now) always press the range button to manually set the meter to a specific range like 0-20VDC. Same goes for resistance readings. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for the block diagram in your excellent presentation. This is a very useful abstraction. I've had success filtering and displaying PID data from the ECM, i.e. RPM, temperature, speed etc; However, I've never had success in isolating data from the BCM , i.e. direction indicators and so forth. No matter where I look, I seem unable to find information about how to access the BCM, to carry out more work on that part of the CAN bus.

@@MRDIAGNOSTECH at time 6.05, 2 resistances in parallel of same ohms 120 gives resultant 60 ohms. That's ok. However, voltage reading at HI and LO are different, 2.7 and 2.3 respectively. Sir, please kindly clarify on this. Thanks.
@MRDIAGNOSTECH
@MRDIAGNOSTECH 4 жыл бұрын
@@tnamen1307 the Hi side switches from 2.5 to 2.7 and the Lo side switches from 2.5 to 2.3. The meter is too slow to switch at the same rate, so it will give the average voltage. You need an oscilloscope to watch the activity. If the CAN is shorted together you will see 2.5V on both. If either bus line is shorted to ground, you will see 0 voltage. Either short could cause a no communication.

When your car breaks down and you go to a mechanic, this is the type of stuff you expect them to know. But most of the time they just use a scanner, read the codes, and tell you you need a new module or component, whatever matches the error. My local Peugeot dealer tried to tell me I needed a new ABS module ($800) because I had an ESP/ABS warning light on. I drove away as fast as I could, and later figured out that it was a dirty EGR valve causing the problem.

Bravo, excellent, intuitive description of the can bus function. I have such an issue, I have power at the DLC at pin 16, and good grounds at 4 & 6. But no communication with the PCM through my Scanner. All the fuses checked out good, and for good measure I replaced the PCM Relay in the Power Distribution box. According to the Wiring Diagram for my 98 F150, both the High Bus & Low Bus are located in the PCM. I didn't suspect the communication problem with the PCM because the Truck Runs. But now if I do the Ohms test, I might discover that one of those busses are bad. Recently I had an Alternator that went bad sending a surge through the electrical system, and blowing a 175 amp fuse, all of which I replaced.
