Hi Sam, This was a really nice video too, i just comment this again to see if you see my comment more faster. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us. I am currently taking the Dolby Atmos 205 & 210 Certification courses, and this was very useful for me since I'm on Windows. I'm having trouble with the connection of the LTC signal. In the video, you show that it's connected, but the Transport section of the Dolby Atmos Renderer and ProTools is not synced. I don't understand why, but the Dolby Atmos LTC Generator (which is installed automatically with the Dolby Atmos Renderer) appears, but it gives me an error when I select the plugin. It says that this plugin is not in the 'Plugin Folder'. So, I have a few questions: Are you able to use the Dolby Atmos Music Panner and the LTC Generator from Dolby in Windows? And most importantly, what do you think is causing the LTC issue between the Dolby Atmos Renderer and ProTools? I've already set up the outputs section correctly, and it gives me a signal in another random channel that I routed to test. However, when I put an LTC .wav file (because, as I mentioned, I can't open the Dolby LTC Generator), it doesn't sync the Time Code section between Dolby and ProTools. I'm using version 5.0.3 of Dolby Atmos, and to rule out some options I've already checked, the 'External Sync source' is configured as 'LTC over audio', and I've tried using channels 128 and 129 as the 'LTC Input Channel'. If you can explain in detail how we can route this LTC Timecode between the software, I would be very grateful because it's my last step to start working with the external renderer. (Or if I can support you in some way to help me fix this problem, please contact me via email at [email protected].) Thank you so much again for your help, your channel is great!

There's a few factors to consider with the LTC. You need the LTC signal from ProTools to output on the channel you've set LTC to use in Dolby Atmos Renderer > Settings > External Sync Source. This is by default set to accept LTC on channel 129 input to DAR but can be edited. The LTC needs to match frame and sample rate too. You can either generate this LTC yourself from an LTC audio file (search google for El-Tee-See Two for a good LTC generator). You can also use an LTC plugin to generate it. TXL20 make some nice LTC Timecode plugins for not too much money. Apart from that that I can't see anything else that would need to be looked at. Unfortunately Dolby don't provide their LTC plugin for Windows VST or AAX. One VERY IMPORTANT point is ProTools only supports 64 Channels of I/O unless you have the Ultimate licence, so LTC will need to be on Channel 64 maximum otherwise it will never sync! Confusingly ProTools shows more than 64 channels of I/O in its routing even though it blocks you using them on lower licences.

Hi Sam, I'm trying to sync Bitwig and DaVinci, but nothing works. What I did is to create a DrivenByMoss "Mackie MCU - Control Universal" on Bitwig with "Mackie MCU Pro" profile and "USB Midi" I/O, then on DaVinci Resolve, into Control Panels I used the MIDI audio console with "MCU compatible" MIDI protocol, and the same "USB Midi" I/O. I restarted the 2 apps, but I have no sync between the two (play button like you do in your video). Do you know what I missed ? I'm a beginner with DaVinci Resolve, and I'm on Macos. Thanks for your help, I didn't find any answer to my issue.

Thanks so much for this! I got it working with Nuendo and it's much better than doing it with AsioLinkPro. There's still some dropping of id's etc. but at least you can reconnect things much more quickly with the graph. I was getting horrendous noises when I made any changes in the Renderer due to Jack suddenly routing the Nuendo outputs straight into the audio outs. I fixed it by changing the Self-Connect Mode to "Ignore self connect requests to external ports only". Now everything is running great. I tested making a QC mp4 file from the Renderer, and that also works fine. Again...Thanks a million!

I don't think Ambisonics can ever be 1:1 with microphone or electronic input because some audio signal is used up by converting PCM to Spherical domain and probably its phase relationship and so sample points altered positions compared to the microphone / pcm input feeding it. All Ambisonic encoder/decoders I've tried portray this non-nulling difference don't they? IEM and Sparta plugins are the same with the low sub and higher frequencies no longer nulling with the input.

Hi Sam, great video. We tested the ambisonics configuration you propose here using our ambisonics production pipeline and it sounds great. It even sounds more natural than the SPS pipeline of your listening test, while at the same time sounds exactly the same as the ORTF-3D Binaural Prerender provided from Boom Library inside the demo files, which we used as the control for our experiment. Here's a small snippet captured that compares the SPS output from your video with the ambisonics output from our pipeline: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3-TlaF-psmsi6s Our listening tests showed that ambisonics is perfectly capable of translating the ORTF-3D recordings as opposed to what your listening tests shown. So your test is not reproducible in our laboratory. We'll be happy to conduct more experiments if you like and get to the bottom of this. 🙂
@SamHocking
@SamHocking 10 ай бұрын
It will not null, that is the nature of Ambisonics encoding and decoding. What is the dynamic range difference too?
@SoundFellas
@SoundFellas 10 ай бұрын
@@SamHocking Ambisonics is not supposed to null. But if you see on our video response we were able to achieve perfect playback of the Boom library's binaural reference using only ambisonics, and it also sounded better than the channel-based approach on your video. So, all we're saying (also in our video description) is that it needs more investigation on the experiment's setup to call it a fair comparison. Ambisonics might not do well on null tests, as much as isotropic channel-based formats don't do well on scene composition techniques like masking areas. There is a trade-off each time a specific technique is used. In our studios we use both higher order ambisonics and channel-based panners using platonic solid configurations (cube is common) in the same project, to server what each stem needs best.

Apologies for another query: although I'm seeing the Resolve bed tracks light up in the Renderer the Object tracks are visible only as bed items: there's no movement in the "theatre" display,- the metadata isn't getting through. If I export from Resolve and open the Master file in the Renderer all is well. BTW I'm working in 5.1.2. I notice that you have eight ASIO DRIVER IN patches whereas I only have two: is this significant? Thank you for any pointers you are able to give.
@SamHocking
@SamHocking Жыл бұрын
The way the Dolby Atmos Renderer works is it receives Metadata from the Dolby Atmos Panner. This metadata is needed, it's not simply an audio channel connecting DAW channel to DAR object/bed channel. You also need the LTC timecode to be working for transport to work. Basically the DAW must transmit the metadata via the DAW Atmos panner or you must use the Dolby Atmos Panner plugin on the track (macos vst/aax/au only)

Dolby Atmos when exported to .mp4 from the DAR is a 5.1 audio file (5.1 DD+) but it also contains JOC information which handles rebuilding the full Atmos mix.
