Hi Curt, i just came across yoūr video of how you built a drafting table. I’m a draftsman by trade, I spent 40+ years drawing either Manual or in CAD. But I am rettred now. But I still like to draw, but cad programs prices are way to high to purchase a good program. S9 I have been looking for a simple .solution. I started privimg small desk top boards. But for the prices were not worth for what you get. Then I came across you board on youtube, I have one word AMAZING, this is exactly looking. Thank you for sharing. Tom

Cool stuff! After many years of tinkering in my shop with wood lathes and making many cnc machines I’ve finally started to get into metal lathe work. Bought a dirt cheap metal lathe that is not great just to get my feet wet (it’s been replaced with a better one) but for my first project I made an aluminum pen. It’s pretty ugly but you have to start somewhere. And now I’m getting hooked on the metal lathe stuff and pen making. Thanks for sharing your work. I’ll try to share my first (really ugly pen). the founder/owner personally lapped each machine by hand..i have a picture from about 78 of Forrest at the work bench where he did it ..(original location in the city of industry, California) . i probably did machining on most of the components on the original micro lathe 2 ... it may sound funny and antiquated now ,but the scroll for the 3 jaw chuck was done on a 2 spindle head punched tape controlled Bridgeport ...

Awesome work...I see this video is about 3 years ago, it feasible to use laser to cut titanium now?
@CurtVanFilipowski4 ай бұрын
You can...laser Ti will have a bit of a heat effected zone but lots of folks use waterjet blanks for that reason.

not sure how you only have 17k subs, nice project very well done. have you thought of doing this again, with epoxycrete?
@CurtVanFilipowski4 ай бұрын
If I had the time I would love to tackle it again with granite slabs and some epoxy granite forms. Add some modern hardware into it (linear rails and ball screws) and I think you could build a very accurate machine.
@ltsky3114 ай бұрын
@CurtVanFilipowski could always epoxy granite parallels to make T-shaped ways, throw some air bearings and you have a micron capable machine.

And lose all the aluminum. Still can’t understand why people go so far then use such a weak and heat sensitive material.

😂 I thought I was the only person who would conceive of such an outlandish idea. Hats off to you sir. If I may; you need a bit more fluidity for self leveling co-planing multiple surfaces, polymer additive, and a vibration compactor, but seriously who cares? It’s rad AF.

May I ask a question about Tarig micro lathe ii? I plan to do some wood turning on metal lathe due to some woods are very hard to cut with woodturning lathe. The Taig micro lathe with riser block can have 6.5” swing. Is that save to mount a 6” diameter fixture( sphere jig) on the Taig micro lathe? Thanks.
Nice video! Been pulled this morning and paid immediately haha. Not sure if mine is the first one to OZ?

If you read this you'll probably get a laugh out of it. I used your video at the 4:00 to explain in a climate debate forum how the Earth's surface (your tumbler) transfers kinetic energy to the atmosphere (media). I've worked in machine shops and now you can ask yourself if a drum spinning at 1,000 mph/1,600kmh on the outside and weighing 5.972 × 10^24 kg could deburr anything like a mountain? Seems to be similar processes without the continental drift creating barriers in your drum.

What a bummer. Got to the website to purchase the pen a couple minutes early play the refresh game. Had the pen in the cart and went to pay for it only to tell me the pen is no longer in stock. All this happened in less then 30sec from start to finish. I'll have to wait for the next pen drop to try again. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these and add it to my collection.

"How Much Money I Make Building Pens in my Garage Shop"..... so, how much DO you actually make ? becasue unless I missed something, I didn;t really hear any numbers.
@147688 ай бұрын
Just a little tip, take it or leave it. At 5:20 when you have 2 ops in one machine, set up one vise to do op1 always and one vise to do op2 always. The first run is a little inefficient because you'll only have parts in op1 vise but on run 2 and after you take the op2 parts out, move the op1 parts to op2 position, and put new parts in the op1 position. This way you never have to change setups, and every run finished parts come out of the machine. It means less fussing about with parts and with soft jaws and setups. This can be extended to 2 and 3 ops if you have enough space.
@CurtVanFilipowski8 ай бұрын
Its a great idea if you have an auto tool changer. In this case I'm batching them this way to minimize the amount of times I have to swap out tools...not as nice as your method (finished parts every cycle is always ideal) but more 'Curt time' efficient! Thanks either way!

Ok, seriously... I've gotta know how you do it. Your work is obviously exceptional, but life is expensive and that shop is $$... I've gone to your website multiple times and have never seen pens available, and your etsy shop says 61 sales since 2010. From one genuinely curious creator to another... how do you pull this off full time? Is it the KZbin $ that helps? Are your pen sales that fast and insane? Is it a dual household income? Is there an investor? Free housing? Drug deals? Onlyfans? I'd love to do my own thing at some point, but it's overwhelming to think about how to clear the $ needed... let alone afford a setup like this without selling hundreds/thousands of pens worth of revenue per month. It would be FASCINATING to hear how you've pulled it off... there's not many people breaking down how they've ditched the corporate world for their passion. I'm sure many would love to hear your strategy from the money perspective. Sorry... I know it's rude to ask... but it's all a guy can do
@CurtVanFilipowski8 ай бұрын
Ask away...I have a video on this exact topic (Titled How Much Money I Make Selling Pens, or something like that). Pens typically sell out within a minute or 2 from listing so the chances of seeing anything in stock is almost zero. A low debt load and a dual income home also helps but I do generate about as much income now as I did with my full time programming/machining job. Hope that sheds a bit of light.
