Please Filofax listen to this man. You are gonna lose A LOT of customers, myself included, if you don't listen to him. The latest next year, people will NOT order this QR-Code bullshit again, after experiencing it the first time. Nice idea, horribly made and not given the easy option to opt-out. Not this way, Filofax, not this way.

The original Lefax size was 3.75" x 6.75". The modern Filfoax Personal is 95 mm (not 96 mm) x 171 mm.

Right from the start, the size of both Filofax and Lefax leaves was specified as 6 3/4” x 3 3/4”. 171mm x 96mm is the modern metric equivalent. You would find that a 100 year old leaf would be a slightly different size to a modern one!
@Flatability
@Flatability 2 күн бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. I always assumed that the metric dimensions were as close as possible to the original US (imperial) dimensions. I think I’ll do some measurements and see just how close it is. I might discuss your comment in a future podcast.

It’s not vital but you were adamant that the standard Filofax leaf has been exactly the same size for more than one hundred years. That’s not quite right! At some stage, the original six and three quarters inches by three and three quarters inches (6.75 x 3.75) became a metric 171mm x 95mm which is 6.73228 inches by 3.74016 inches!

I agree with consistency in ringbinders. Though one crucial size in my eyes is missing: A6. Fortunately my org-verlag Juniors are A6. Compact, flat and easy to produce refills. Yes A6 fits Personal siEd ringbinders, but it seems like a waste.

Thanks for the excellent advice! As a 70 year old woman, I have victim written all over me. I love to go to thrift stores to find planning supplies. In addition to small wallets in my pockets with ID, medical and credit cards, I carry a "dummy" purse on my shoulder. In it, I carry $20 along with used Starbucks and other used gift cards. If I'm accosted, my plan is to throw the purse past the robber and run in the opposite direction. I hope this works!

I like to get deatramentis archival inks because they are waterproof. I like to sketch and watercolor so the deatramentis archival works for that. The Noodler’s Lexington gray and also Noodlers brown 41 are both waterproof also. They are the only two that I know of. I have been contemplating getting Tom’s pen for awhile now but I like using the fountain pen more than the fine liner. I know I can do that with Tom’s also, but I have some very nice fountain pens that I already have. Thank you for the review!

You'd say this filofax is the only thing similar to the plotter? These days?
@Flatability

It’s similar, but not the only one. The Filofax Mini Executive is very similar, but this model also suffers from the same “leather” issue.

I've been interested in the Plotter for a long time, but the price has held me back. Later, I saw a comparison image on Reddit between the Plotter and another brand, Meeplus, and I'm considering whether to switch to the Meeplus notebook. Both brands have similar designs, leather materials, and Krause rings. However, this notebook resolves the sharp edge issue, and the leather's back and edges are treated, making it less prone to getting dirty. Even better, it's much cheaper! Could the blogger also review this notebook?

Note about prices: for us in the USA, the Malden is $154 on the FiloFax website, while the Van Der Spek is $144. The VDS doesn't come with inserts, so that's something to consider.

Hi thanks for the video. I have Guildford with the cracking. The back pocket fell off completely. The inner layer as you say looks like a different material altogether. The outside leather does seem nice though. i agree, such a shame as its a nice stylish piece but not made well enough to last. Shame the plotter is so expensive to buy from UK.

You heard of Plotter? I think you’ll like it. I wish I could walk into a brick and mortar shop for my fountain pens and others. But being where I am in NZ online shopping and importing is the only way. A bit sad really but the alternative is not to able to get them at all. I am just starting Plotter for next year and the reason for it is my good experience with Filofax by Braun Buffel back in the day. But that has become too bulky. I am currently on Hobinichi and have tried Travelers Notebook. Someone mentioned Filofax heritage as their main planner, as we were talking size choices and whether Filofax personal size is equivalent to Plotter Bible size. They are a good approximation. That conversation got me curious about what Filofax Heritage is like. I feel Filofax isn’t competitive with their designs. The materials aren’t good and the designs felt like they are on the back foot following other trends and not in a good way. I fear they won’t make it for much longer without a big change of direction Thank you so much for sharing this!

I saw seaweed kisses video awhile back about how the vintage Filofaxes are so nice (generally) but now everything is “pop” - the colors and faux leather etc… I suppose they have changed their target market.
@Flatability
@Flatability 19 күн бұрын
I saw the same video. I thought it hit the nail on the head. The Filofax brand definitely seems to have experimented with its target market over the years. I do t think I fit into their target audience, but I’m pleased that they still offer many models in black, that might appeal to us guys. Having said that, I quite like my Heritage Compact (despite the problems with the rings).

I would not say that is good condition because of the leather peeling 🤔 I actually have a guildford extra slim as well and there’s just a bit of cracking on the inside lower part where it hits the rings. I don’t want to peel off all the leather… I wonder if conditioning or something would stop the deterioration?
@Flatability
@Flatability 19 күн бұрын
My hunch is that peeling is inevitable, but conditioning might delay things a little. I have left the leather on my Mini Executive, to see what would happen, and what is happening is that the pages are covered in tiny specs of leather. Personally, I do love my Guildford personal, but it took some time to remove all the flaky bits of leather, and I appreciate that not everyone would want to do that.
@tortagialla
@tortagialla 19 күн бұрын
@@Flatability Thanks for your input. I hope it doesn’t flake into a million pieces because mine looks just like a big crack - maybe different weather affects it differently too!
@Flatability
@Flatability 19 күн бұрын
I think you're right. I have owned an A4 Lyndhurst, for instance, for 20 years, with no cracking. But I have seen others that have cracked. I'm guessing that it might be variations of usage and storage, so maybe some conditioning can reduce this cracking. Of course, the real problem is the layering of different materials that will have different coefficients of linear expansion. If Filofax just returned to making binders in full thickness leather (rather than bonding a very thin layer of "leather" onto a manmade substrate, the cracking problem would be eliminated.

Best water-resistant fountain pen inks I've tried are Platinum Carbon Black, De Atramentis Document (multiple colours) and Diamine Registrar's (blue-black only). I always have at least some water-resistant inks because I like to draw with my fountain pens, and I sometimes use a watercolour wash over them.

Found this in your “back catalogue” I like the ARC system because of its flexibility. I have them in A4, A5 & A6 sizes. I have now made one in A7 following your video. The smallest discs I have are 12mm, are there any smaller ones? How did the experiment go with your A7 trial?
@Flatability
@Flatability 26 күн бұрын
Glad you found my video useful. I feel, on reflection, that A7 is a little on the small side for discs, but ok for rings. But I will talk about this in a future podcast. Let me think about it for a while.

@@Flatability My A7 rings is not a Filofax and has 6 rings so the dimensions are much larger than A7. So the A7 discs is proving perfect for use as a notebook and simple reminder pad. Flew out on holiday today and used it last night and this morning to list out to do’s for the day. Easy to keep in the pocket of shorts with a Zebra mechanical pencil from Amazon clipped in it.

If I note something in my A7 discs I need to keep I can either re-write it in my A7 rings or A5 discs if it’s short, or punch holes in the paper on the other vertical side and move to the A7 rings or move it directly to the A5 discs as a fly sheet. The other advantage I can see is having standard repeating daily tasks, that I always forget, on a sheet that can be quickly and easily moved to the next day. I’m not using it as a diary.

While the consistency in paper sizes is good, there are still times when I feel like screaming. I bought an A5 notepad (5 actually, because why not?) for work which is top-bound but also has 4 holes for the option to get individual sheets into the ring bound system. And of course when I checked with the A5 Filofax inserts I have recently acquired, it does not match at all. Uniformity in such mundane places would be greatly appreciated by many.
