I’d say a lot of the original releases of these invasives would probably come during flood events when houses get washed out. Every time I see a flood with houses getting inundated, I always wonder what’s getting released from flooded fish tanks. It’s kind of scary what species could be out there swimming free in numbers that aren’t big enough to have been noticed yet. You’re right too about idiots doing deliberate releases but don’t forget the impact flood events are playing in the introduction of invasives.

We have a lot of natives around Gladstone. Unfortunately I've found quite a few invasive species here as well, in one water way I found Oscar fish. Lots of Gambusia and Endler guppy here too, although the hardyheads seem to do fine with them. In my experience Rainbow fish don't seem to be found with Gambusia which is concerning.

Hey mate just found your channel. Great work. I have a few stories about the places you visited. My father and i used to fish alot around there. That first stream used to be loaded with red claw yabbies, every rock you turned over there was a yabbie. I was there over the weekend and that spot is bone dry. We need the rains.
@murkyseb8 ай бұрын
Thank you, and thanks for sharing that information! How long ago did you see the red claws there?
@Acidassassin4208 ай бұрын
@murkyseb all good. Going back 10 to 15 years ago. After a good rain is when you want to visit this spot in particular, but with lack of rain lately it's dried up. But yeah used to get crimson spots, gudgeons and all the usual stuff around the area. I'm going hunting to find some good spots again, alot of places seem to be too dry or just overfished lately.

How cold is the water in those parts of Australia?
@murkyseb9 ай бұрын
This was right on the border between Qld and NSW on the Qld side and the water in this mountain range is cold all year round. It's significantly colder than the surrounding lowlands. I haven't recorded the temperature of the water but I'd say it's around 5 to 10c cooler than the rest of South east Qld which varies but in summer some of the lowland creeks average 27c. Today some of the lowland creeks are 21c.

I live in central Brisbane and the local creek is a major water runoff from many suburbs. Every time I go to catch fish, we find something different. I love gudgeons the most. My fav fish to catch. So far we have got the usual Fire tails but lots of different single type catches. Ive caught one Peacock Gudgeon, which was a male.I also had the exact same experience with an Emperor Gudgeon. I put my net in and saw this bright orange red fish just the same way. Had to take it home to ID it. Further down the creek ends into brackish water and we have got a few Striped Gudgeons. Also in the same spot we have got Flat Headed Gudgeons. Also one more I am still trying to ID. They seem to be the only fish able to compete with all the invasives in this spot. No Blue Eyes or Rainbows. Nothing. I am sure I have seen Tilapia there at times but because its a major water run off creek, it gets flushed out often and nothing seems to take a hold for any length of time. We have also caught lots of Mullet and baby Herrings that have swam up into the fresh water from where it meets the salt. Cheers for the Video. Love natives.

Barred grunters are very aggressive if you try to keep them in an aquarium, unless perhaps you start with a tiny baby one which grows up a bit more meekly, surrounded by larger fish.
