The end of the video kinda shows a sad compilation of how interns are not able or struggle to pull archival footages. It might be convinient for a intern to pull some "pirated" KZbin footage for a quick News report but it still shows how much SABC deals with themselves in a unprofessional manner. Well, it gets the the job in the end of the day done, neh? On some occasions, I did witness that they properly pull some archival footages of various shows for some new productions, meaning most of the content is pretty well digitalized and stored somewhere in their networks/servers but probably unorganized. A while ago, a popular KZbin by the name of ThioJoe, bought some episodes of The Generations off SABC to find a certain part where Rapulana Seiphemo character does the viral expression "Am I a Joke to you?" (the irony), but he had to buy a batch of episodes because he coulnd't guess in where this scene was. When he found it and posted it on KZbin, many fans of the show pointed out that they could simply tell him which episode it was and a few ppl had it actually taped. It's funny how that viral expression, known only as a picture, could be discovered in video many years later. And I got another embarrassing thing to tell, which I was unintentionally involved with "my pirated footage". A year ago, BET Africa created a 5 episode-part biopic of the late Mandoza. In the most important scene, that should serve as the climax of his career, which was the recording of his hit song Nkalakatha, they used that poor footage of his music video that I uploaded a few years back on KZbin. Rather asking the estate or the label or even the video director Lianne Cox, which they collaborated once on a Pale Ya Kosa documentary series last year, they really used my kak footage of Nkalakatha, which I myself am not impressed of. I was just trying to be the first person who uploaded the video (poor quality because I ripped it off from Facebook) because nobody, even Vevo or the label, has uploaded the video of a song that had A HUGE impact and crossed racial lines in the early 2000s. It be really a shame... see it yourself while this thing here lasts on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWXZqXV4aJeeeKcfeature=shared&t=2591 (and you can even hilariously see a spinning watermark on the right bottom corner)

Now what's left from South Africa Media in the 90s and 2000s is a void. And it's been really tough to fill the void with the footage and media, that carries memories and the stepping stones of this generation. Legacy media overseas is maintained and invested so much of it's previous generation film and music in reissues, remasters like remastered music videos by vevo and on-demand access on streaming platforms. (Except for the lack of Soul Train, which still hurts..). That creates a whole interest group and even promises new profits for the same cooperations. Despite of the current economic state we are aware of here, I know it's definitely a cooperate issue. Interns and the decision makers really lack the competence on the dynamics of their viewers. It is certainly true that Television significantly defined the post-apartheid generation than nowadays mobile phone generation, that absolutely are right now the minority of their viewer's demographics and lead to the decline of shows. About the handling of archived Jam Alley footage and other affected legacy media, I assume its a fest among many problems about music licenses, ownership between the production company and SABC, and contracts that promise residual royalities for the volunteers and artists if the certain media gets renewed (Normally SABC should have all rights beyond the expiration their contracts, but public backlash kinda hinders the continuation as it was with the case with SABC Encore)
@kwaito199419 күн бұрын
What a informative and researched insight. I did not expect the demand of legacy media from somebody else than me. Jam Alley was truly the refuge for the youth after apartheid. Foreign media was way too oversaturated and very distinctly unfamiliar for the locals to be consumed at that time. It was there to cater and unify the local demographics with its locally brewed music such as 80s bubblegum and 90s house/kwaito, although it occasionally had overseas segments like the Nik Naks in between to inform about whats hip. Unfortunately, its really a shame how legacy media in such form isn't kept around. Shows nowadays trying to establish a youth scene among SA Hip Hop and Amapiano fans struggle to keep a presence on national television and are more internet sensations, as Television along is nowadays dying out. As a music enthusiast for SA musical past, it's difficult as well to gather much footage from the kwaito era, which leads to it's forgotten importance for SA music industry today. On a note, SABC tried to bring the nostalgic legacy media with it's co-channel SABC Encore, which unfortunately couldn't last because of royalty and contract disputes by former artists and presenters.

Lots of production houses around the world have lost footage of shows and movies, it happens. I dont like the undertone here framing the SABC as incompetent for this, sure they are incompetent for lots of other things, just that this is not some rare case. Very very very few around the world saw the digital age coming and had the foresight to DAP tapes to digital or to hang on to show rights. Keep in mind that copying tapes to digital was VERY expensive, its only recently that its cheaper and less time consuming. So sadly, whats done is done. Im grateful for the old shows they managed to get digital. The rest we can replay in memory. Nothing lasts forever.
@gosomewhereSLOWАй бұрын
We agree with you, it does happen. However, using cellphone-recorded footage that was uploaded and pirated for V’s passing while the actual footage was right there makes one wonder: they were either lazy or just didn’t care. There’s nothing else on the menu. Like the time they lost the last recorded interview of struggle veteran Andrew Mlangeni (which was recorded in 2020). And it is this style of incompetence that suggests they don’t realise what they have. Nostalgia aside, they don’t even capitalise on the rise of Amapiano and the welfare of the culture. Despite being the biggest public library to feature its origins.

We all collectively stopped trying as South Africans simply 'cause she's black, he's white, and they talk, walk, and do human funny. We allowed segregation to win, in segregation we 'thrive' in our shameful privileges, living in our beautiful prisons called homes... To fix South Africa, you have to completely change its culture (180 degrees); however, how do people let go of the only thing that defines them? They'd rather keep their stupid culture than grow as a collective, but no, this is mine, mine, and all mine. Dead people did this, so let us continue to live how our ancestors did in 1956 and keep blaming everyone else but ourselves. As a society, we've all contributed and continue to contribute to the downfall of our nation, and we must face the repercussions of our collective actions. - Black South African here (for context)

As a proud DA voter, I’m still waiting for Glencore to be mentioned. This is a company that made history with a record fine and was banned from the USA - yet Cyril Ramaphosa's friends, Glencore and Patrice Motsepe continue to be shielded. Corporate South Africa is the real power player here, and they are part of the same network as the current re-elected president of the Republic. a dom naai. Let’s be clear: if Jacob Zuma had committed any crimes, he’d have been arrested by now. It's baffling how one can accuse someone of committing crimes over 24+ years and fail to prove a single one. I don't like Zuma for personal reasons; however, if corporate South Africa was not involved in this, oh, trust me, Zuma was not gonna be allowed to see any light of day. Corporate South Africa is way more corrupt than what is reported in the mainstream media. They run the media, fund these brainless politicians, and monopolize every single thing they can. "To eat, we need to privatize and monopolize every basic human need; now let's break Eskom and all other state-owned enterprises!" yours sincerely, Corporate South Africa, CC: AU. That's the best and most heartless business model in the world: to deliberately break something that’s functioning perfectly, only to then profit from the cost and effort of fixing it at the expense of everyone else, but your inner circle. Dom citizens, with dom "leaders." Nothing new here... The blind leading the blind.
