I was on a cruise from 12/19-12/21 in 1980.. She was decorated for Christmas and was due to leave on her Christmas Cruise... I have to see what I have in Photos... they definitely need to be scanned...The last reports I heard said she was in pretty good shape, but the challenge of keeping her in good nick over there is huge. Blistering sun, salt air, AC producing moisture, all cause problems.. Similarly, the Queen Elizabeth had many issues when she was in Florida compared to Queen Mary in LBC which was much drier and has more consistent weather..

That is so cool! To have sailed on her. And before her super mega refit, too. And, yes, we're keeping our fingers crossed that she continues to get the care she needs. I would love to visit her in Dubai one day.

It's too bad the ship is in rough shape right now, but it's also not in the worst shape like the SS United States and I'm glad you covered both topics. I wonder if they could do a cycling race around the boat deck :D I would love to partake and be qualified for one of those. There's a lot of space without the lifeboats. I know it's sad to not have the lifeboats but while we don't have them, I think the deck is strong enough for some cyclists...right?

Ten bucks says the doors opening and closing gag in the "rolling seas" was just done with one person standing behind each door. Coordinating that sort of action is pretty easy when you are shooting without sound because you can just shout "OPEN!" in the middle of the take.

It was an oversight with the shutter speed in order to achieve the brown tones as well as providing enough light in something of a dark setting. The screen was so small that I didn't notice until after all the video clips were uploaded to my external harddrive. I'm working on getting better at essential camera settings. Some color grading should be done post-production. Hopefully it added to the haunted angle. And, yeah! It's not about the time of day in order to experience things, it's about being in the unique place and the unique time. Third Class is where its at these days.

That one full deck of balconies on the 2nd-in-class Monarch in 1991 was trumped seven years earlier by the 1984 Royal Princess with 1.5 full decks of balconies (it’s still sailing as Phoenix Reisen Artania; PR added some more balconies), and the 1989 Crystal Harmony with ~2.6 full decks of balconies. The 1995 Legend of the Seas had two balcony decks; the 1995 Sun Princess had three and a bit (both 1st-in-class ships). Legend was later converted to have a third balcony deck. I think Princess should get credit for leading on balconies; RCI was a laggard until Voyager.
@ManWhoLovesTheMary17 күн бұрын
I hear you on the 1984 Royal Princess. She was way ahead of her time. And aged very well. As for Crystal, kind of like with Carnival, not sure who was copying who or inspired by who. But Princess definitely takes the cake on this one. And the Royal Princess was a futuristic, though regal ship to take that crown. Good spotting.
@imatrampoline17 күн бұрын
@@ManWhoLovesTheMary The 1984 Royal is one of my most favourite ships, that’s why I got the record scratch when I when watched your video: my favourite could do with some credit here! (I haven't been on her, just from a point of ship geekery.) She never got any sisters, either because of the economics of all outside cabins, or because Princess merged with Sitmar four years later and inherited three newbuilds on order, but I’ve heard people say the Crystal Harmony and Symphony are sisters-in-spirit. I really love those too (also Crystal's parent NYK’s Asuka which was a bit smaller; Asuka is now Phoenix Reisen Amadea). One more innovative thing about the 1984 Royal it’s the first big ship I can think of where the big deck switcharound happened, and the saloon deck and boat deck were placed low to the waterline, with the majority of cabins above. This is how all ships would eventually go due to SOLAS. I think the later Carnival Fantasy class ships were the last of the oldschool high-lifeboat design, and Carnival got away with it by laying a whole bunch of keels before the cutoff date when the SOLAS rules would ban that design, and then with the keels laid, they had as long as they wanted to finish them. Have you heard about that one?
@ManWhoLovesTheMary17 күн бұрын
@ I haven’t heard about that. It’s deep insight that I wonder where you discovered such awesome insight. I feel like researching SOLAS throughout time really helps connect a lot of synapsis.

Cameron’s movie is so special to me because of the way it looks, they nailed some indescribable subconscious thing that just makes you feel like you are there. It straight up looks real. The glow of the sun is literally real. While the 2012 miniseries looks like a BBC television production with modern actors. It has a meta aesthetic to it, it looks like a period piece and not something real. I look at it and see actors on a set. I look at Cameron’s film and I feel the wind and the temperature and the sounds. It’s just simply vivid.
