Bob is - alongside with Michael Scriven - the person who, in his professional biography and for the evaluation profession and evaluation science, initiated the striking paradigm shift at the end of the 1970s, in Bob's terminology towards "responsive evaluation". Today, this thinking underlies most widely used (English-language) textbooks and has also initiated the turn towards the utilisation-focused evaluation that dominates them (see the review of Alkin&Christie "Evaluation Roots" in the currently published "Zeitschrift für Evaluation"). Anyone who wants to understand what evaluation 'really' is should consult Michael's magnificent appraisal.

Evaluators speak truth to power? I am not so sure. Speaking truth is a mission of scientists. Should jesters tell us that Earth is not flat? Popularization of (evaluation) science is important. However, it should not lead to infantilization, even to perversion of the profession. I would not relate evaluators to Shakespeare but to Socrates - he only knows he knows nothing: the essence of knowledge is not foolishness but the void (Heisenberg, Derrida, Sartre, Lacan, Žižek). We need to be careful with metaphors in the post-truth era.

I like that the acronym SCIONS evokes metaphorical « green shoots » of social innovation. The sociological law also seems biomimetik of the relationship among adaptive resilience and intra specific, inter specific and ecosystem diversity. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1755-1315/1072/1/012012/pdf

🎉Thank you for revisiting ontological, educative, catalytic and tactical authenticity as sensitizing concepts. The framework offers inspiration for fulsome, exciting theories of use specific differential experiences of rights-holders in a context. Also, the early definition of “authentic assessment” made it clear why culturally responsive assessment is so important.

A powerful government inherently attracts narcissistic sociopaths to its ranks. As the coercive power of the state expands and individual liberty is curbed, more sociopathic politicians will be enticed into its ranks.

Michael, thank you very much for this review and the many relevant references to the discussion of this book. Although I agree with many of them, I disagree with you as follows: 1 That the Theory Tree is "out of date" (18:20) , I find a judgement of an insider who does not think enough about the world view of outsiders. I am thinking especially of evaluation education - here outsiders need a first orientation, in botany we would say: an "identification book" - I don't know a more up-to-date one for this than Evaluation Roots. When they have worked out the central identification features, they can go into the forest with it and identify trees and maybe even discover a new species. 2 You say this: the evaluation theory tree has influenced all (sic!) practicing theorists to integrate valuing, methods and use in their practice. This statement certainly does not apply to German-speaking countries: recently, at a conference, following my keynote, I had a very friendly public discussion with a representative of critical rationalism who heads a department on evaluation at a major German university. That working systematically with values is an indispensable task of evaluation science is a very alien view of the world for him. I suspect he is not alone in the world in this. I sincerely hope that your "out of date" is not quoted in academic papers without the context you provide, even by ChatGPT.

While I was not aware of the terminology and the concept name, I started implementing the evaluation forest and I quote based on the "natural landscape" especially in the context of the middle east and particularly Lebanon with economic and political crises reflected on other "landscapes". I decided to let it grow organically and ended up with, as you concluded, "a new forest of evaluation made up of many different varieties of evaluation"

Evaluator-who-loves-system-perspective viewpoint: I think Mike Jackson has a lot to offer in terms of systems science...I will definitely check him out as I seek to advance my systems understanding. I am particularly interested in his point about all of the systems concepts that evaluators have perhaps not yet considered. My take home from this debate and career as an evaluator is that you really need to have years inside of the belly of the evaluation beast to be able to adequately critique the application of systems concepts within evaluation. I agreed with Patton's arguments as they relate to evaluation. He did a great job of repping the field--itself arguably a complex, adaptive system that will likely evolve as a result of ongoing debate. One lesson for me here is that, in the same way that a systems expert may fall short in seeking to understand evaluation (which Jackson awesomely acknowledged), I imagine that evaluators need to approach systems thinking with the same humility and curiosity (which Patton awesomely suggested). Perhaps instead of a rematch, a co-created KZbin session by the two Michaels is in order.

Thank you, I am using very similar concepts in my practice to accompany the transformation of Residential Child Care programs in Italy. The systemic view can have many different interpretations. So many people claim to use a systemic framework, but then, what I see in their practice is linearity, the idea of separated phases (you have first to observe, than plan, then evaluate) and "best practices" is dominant in the field. Responsiveness and reflexivity are my keywords. I am tracking your work, really very useful.
