This is stunningly beautiful. You are an incredible sculptor. I have a quick question, if you don't mind. Is the Talens varnish safe for polymer clay that hasn't been painted or colored with powder pigments? I've been trying to find a good spay varnish that doesn't turn polymer clay sticky.

I used to use both the Talens fixative and varnish spray but did not like it as it did turn sticky after a while and did not offer enough uv protection. I exclusively use the molotow uv protection spray for each layer of pastel and for the last layer i use liquitex professional brush on varnish (matte, high gloss,satin, depending on the look i want) to make sure everything is properly sealed.

I only use it when i do colored pencil work on non absorbing papers like sanded papers, so every now and then i use the powder blender still. But usually i like to work on finer grained hotpressed watercolor papers so i work a lot more with zest-it as a colored pencil blender medium, watercolor papers are very absorbing so the powder blender will not work on those papers. It is a very good blending medium, but limited to non absorbing surfaces, such as gessoed board and sanded papers like Uart.

6:50 Oil pastel without any thinning liquid (OMS, Zest It, Linseed oil). I think there is a huge difference between a solvent (OMS or Zest It) and linseed oil: solvents somehow make the colors less glossy. If you just paint your pastel strokes - the Matt Fussel style - layer upon layer, you will have a brutally gorgeous-looking massive oil pastel painting with awesome colors. With solvent you, kind of, turn/degrade your precios oil pastels into a "color pencil-like" medium. The oil pastel paintings in my sketchbook look much more vibrant and "serious" pieces of artwork than color pencil or watercolor (I love them both, too). I think, the primary advantage of oil pastel is that the resulting artwork will look so gorgeous as an oil painting without the hassle of using the oil painting tooling. What do You think?
@JenWFineArts
@JenWFineArts Жыл бұрын
I am not very experienced with oil pastels yet so in this piece i have been experimenting mostly, it does turn the pastel matte and dries the pastel a bit, but i did not really notice any color dulling, also the final layers on the animal i did not really thin out anymore with solvent, the camera did not illustrate the colors very well, in real life the artwork is a lot more bolder and vivid in colors, for me a dilluant just makes it easier to get these fine details which i struggle to get with the chunky pastels on the format i was working on, but i might give it a try to do something with oil pastels only at some point :)

16:23 So, for highlights you recommend oil paint or solvent diluted oil pastel "paint"? For your color pencil artwork you use W&N Calligraphy white ink, wouldn't that work for oil pastels either? Sorry for the number of questions, I've watched Your video at least three times, this is massive information bomb on oil pastels, not a relaxation soap opera movie.
@JenWFineArts
@JenWFineArts Жыл бұрын
I used to use the w&Newton white calligraphy ink but the ink in the bottle dries out to fast so nowadays i go with pen white ink from dr PH Martin, i got their white ink bottle for years and it won't dry out:) i have seen people using white acrylic ink on top of oil pastels before so i suppose it is possible, the reason i am not going that route for my highlights on oil pastels is because i worry it won't last, it might start to crackle or flake of because of the fat over lean rule, the oil pastels underneath stay fatty and sticky and will never truly dry out, the ink on top however does and that usually means the ink on top won't last.

@JenWFineArts
@JenWFineArts Жыл бұрын
Yes that is right, at the beginning i took the pigment right of the pastel with solvent but Found out that it was leaving a dry hard film on my pastel (which i could peel of) so i got worried it might ruin the pastel in the long run so i thought using the masking tape as pallet to pick pigment off from was a safer way to get what i want and to preserve my oil pastels.

11:27 Royal Talens has an oil pastel brand Van Gogh, and those sticks has lightfastness ratings prited on the wrappings of the sticks, they are half the price of Sennelier sticks and 1/3 more expensive than Mungyo sticks.

Yes that's right but, van Gogh is royale Talens student grade brand (their artist grade is Rembrandt) so the Senneliers and Caran d ache neo pastels are of a higher Quality then the van Goghs as those 2 are artist grade products. (That's why the van Gogh is cheaper)

9:03 All Mungyo colors are opaque because of the mixed in titanium white? Hmm, this would explain that all Mungyo sticks behave consistently, which is great, but my experience is that there are no really dark colors. In Sennelier we have brutally dark colors but not in Mungyo, at least not as dark as in Sennelier. I've learned so many things from Your video.
@JenWFineArts
@JenWFineArts Жыл бұрын
I believe it's because Senneliers is mainly pure pigment with the oils/wax binders of a much higher quality then the mungyos, that's why the Senneliers have a lot of transparent colors ( because a lot of pigments are Translucent by default like yellows and reds), the Senneliers are a lot softer too and allow for thick texturing if you want to ( like doing oil paintings with a pallet knife) the mungyos level out, i was not able to get these thick textured layers with them. So i guess there is a lot of difference between oil pastel brands which i think is interesting!

You would need a large round tray silicone mold to make the sun catcher, you would need epoxy resin ( that is a resin with a A and B part which you have to mix together to have it cure in 24 hours) you would need uv resin (transparent which you can color with pigments or dye) or colored uv resin to make the stained glass details with, and the thicker 3D liner resin to draw your design with. Then some chains to hang it up with or for decoration, the mold you can find on amazon, aswell as the apoxy resin and uv resin , the 3D liner resin i haven't found on there, Sophie &toffee might still sell those on their webshop, but alternatively i think there are also products that give you the same effect that are acrylic based, but i also have seen people use black acrylic paints to draw the design on.

My opinion without offending anyone: - They should put a very large indicative on the protective film, as I see a lot of people complain that it scratches easily when it doesn't. They simply do not remove this protective film. The sticker that should have the function of removing the protective film is a complete fail, so I recommend using a piece of masking tape to do that job. - On Android it works excellent in terms of sensitivity, rotation, pressure; except that drawing a perfect circle (helped with a circular cap) on the cell phone reflects an oval. I understand that this is due to the aspect ratio of the cell phone (19.5:9 in huawei y9s) but I see that all manufacturers are falling asleep creating drivers for Android with the function to adapt to the aspect ratio of the cell phone screen, just like in Windows or Mac. - The wireless version works just as well as the wired version, you don't feel any kind of lag, both on PC and Android. The L-shaped Type-C cable is something that is greatly appreciated. - The pencil looks very poor quality, it even seems to be made at home with a 3d printer. But it works great, that's just the impression it gives. The feel and position of the buttons is good compared to my old wacom where I hardly felt whether I was pressing button 1 or 2. - I feel that the pressure that you have to apply with the pencil is a lot to obtain the 8000 levels, although I have the curve in the driver at the limit, I feel the same, it is something that I did not feel with the wacom. I'll have to play more with the curve, but at first it's something that makes me a little uneasy. - The surface is large and has (to my liking) too much texture compared to a wacom, this one (ugee) feels less natural, more plastic, but this helps to scratch less. Due to this "super-texture" sometimes the hand gets stuck on long strokes, they should include a 2-finger glove for a more enjoyable experience. - They should sell tips as accessories on the manufacturer's website; although it brings 10 spares (I estimate about 4-5 years to spend them all) it feels like they wear out quickly due to the texture of the tablet. So, it would not be bad to give the client some peace of mind and let him see that it is a brand that cares about the details in the future. In general terms, the tablet is perfect for its price, I bought it in a flash sale with a 24% discount plus a coupon of 10 dollars, costing only 51 dollars. The brand's customer service through social networks is excellent (you must take into account the time change for the response time, they are in Hong Kong). I recommend it for people who are coming from a small tablet or for those who want a second tablet at an affordable price. SR! from Avartica <3

@@get2thechopper139 i use the liquitex one as a final coating when i am done painting to seal everything off. But it is better to use a spray varnish for dry pigments as that won't move the pigment around, when you varnish dry pigments with brush it will smear the micas/pigments around for sure (turning it into paint sort of) which you do not want. I use the uv spray varnish from molotow when i use dry pigments, the liquitex brush on is fine for sealing acrylic paints or for a final layer when the dry pigments are sealed in place with a spray varnish.
