Good explanations for checking DC resistance of windings, but I have seen cases in transformers where an inter-winding short would only appear with the kind of high AC voltage swings seen in actual operation. A DMM will not reveal these.

@fredsapplianceacademy5 күн бұрын
Most appliances are set up for 3 wire install. However, if the appliance is set up for a 4 wire install it may be intended for 4 wire only. Not that it cant be done but it might require some altering of the appliance which would be unnecessary as you could just buy a 4 wire cord.

@fredsapplianceacademy4 күн бұрын
@@JoeHall-c9f Okay, we hear ya. all you really need to do is make sure the grounding strap or wire is attached to the neutral on the terminal block and then attaches to the ground or cabinet of the dryer. After that simply install the 3 wire cord just like you saw in the video and you are good to go. We hope that helps!

Not necessarily. If the load is unbalanced between the neutral and live then there would be a small amount. Neutral doesnt normally have any ampacity

What that means is how much current something can carry before it gets too hot or above its max rated temperature. Both hot and neutral lines have this.

What if your multimeter is powered by a 9V battery?
@fredsapplianceacademy11 күн бұрын
Set it to ohms and test it's voltage output with another meter. If it is outputting 9vdc it will work. Most digital meters only output 3-4vdc on the ohms setting which is not enough to test the diode.

Good day Mr. I would like to ask you regarding the microwave Transformer. I had taken out the transformer from the microwave unit and i was doing measurement at the primary, secondary and hv wire winding with digital and analog miulimeter, all are good, My question is: Why the transformer makes loud humming noise when I was connected the primary to 220volt ac, is this a symptom that the transformer is going damaged? Your reply very much appreciated thanks🤝
@fredsapplianceacademy17 күн бұрын
In shorts as the AC current passes through the winding it creates a magnetic field at 60 hertz. The hertz is a frequency like sound waves and this vibration is what you hear. Here in the states the primary is designed for 120 vac so over driving it with 220 vac can make the hum louder. Hope that helps.
@jimmybonges45116 күн бұрын
Good day Mr. The transformer is designed fr 220vac it’s not 110vac..you right as normally when we test the transformer(just live testing without any secondary connected to) there will be any vibration and a little hum.. but in this transformer is abnormally sounds come out. Anyway . At the end i replaced the transformer with the new one ..and now the microwave running normally. I suspected there is a loose wire roll of transformer winding inside due to their age .. the microwave product is year 1993.. Many thanks appreciated for your reply.
@fredsapplianceacademy16 күн бұрын
@@jimmybonges451 1993 That's so awesome!!!!!! Good for you and keeping things alive. Another thing that can cause excessive noise in the transformer is the metal plates that are welded together start to separate. Either from small cracks in the plates or the welds. when the primary gets energized the magnetic field wants to push them apart and then they vibrate abnormally. Thanks for getting back to us Jimmy. we are very happy to be of any assistance.
@jimmybonges45116 күн бұрын
Yes you right.. agreed🤝it could be from the metal plates .. the beginning of the problem this microwave oven was the main fuse alwys blown off when turn it on. All the critical components the critical components such as HV capasitor, HV diode, and the Magnetron all checked are very good, that’s why I was doing live testing the transformer just injected the primary side to 220Vac then straight away abnormally a very loud buzzing sound was heard. After replaced the transformer with the new one the problem went away. So, Many thanks and much appreciated to your goodness🤝🙏🏻

I also came up with the idea to do this to test my microwave diode when I suspected that the diodes I was getting and testing before installation couldn't ALL be bad could they?!?! I then happened to read on an amazon seller's page, a description of how a typical digital MM won't work, so I thought hey, why not boost things by making a litle circuit with a 9V and test for presence of voltage instead of the diode test setting. However a caution for all. Another video on this platform recommends a 240ohm resistor in the test circuit since the diodes can't necessary handle much current. However I had watched the video only after I had done the test similar to the video above, and there was no damage to the diode. I feel that one is probably safe doing the method that I usedand shown in this video since the MM itself doesn't draw hardly any, so it is unlikely that it will harm the diode.
@fredsapplianceacademy19 күн бұрын
We promise this test method will not hurt the diode :)

You have a direct dry washing machine. While these will suds lock if too much detergent is used they usually will correct themselves. Modern machines are the ones to be concerned about when a suds lock occurs. The computer gets confused and will run multiple cycles. Using one to 2 tablespoons of detergent may be appropriate for a small load, such as in your video but for a full load you need to use the recommended amount on the detergent bottle. These old machines use a tremendous amount of water and have excellent rinsing capabilities.
@fredsapplianceacademy19 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment Matthew. In the video it was a direct drive unit and does not have a modern control board and will suds lock. However, the purpose of the video was simply to show you have to reduce suds. Any more than 2 tablespoons for a modern machine is a excessive amount of soap. Following what the bottle tells you is a mistake and will get you into a over sudsing issue or a suds lock.
@MatthewJames-st5wv19 күн бұрын
@@fredsapplianceacademy Not on these older machines it won’t. You need more
@fredsapplianceacademy18 күн бұрын
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Sorry Matt! When I got your comment to replay to I think it goes mixed up some how or I just read it wrong. Anyway, you would be correct. On the older units they used so much more water that you would in fact need to use more soap. These units also come from the days when HE detergent was not really a thing yet. Honestly I miss working on them as they were a good machine.

What if you don't have softener? Isn't there a natural substance that kills suds? I know cold water kills suds, but not the amount of suds I have.
@fredsapplianceacademy23 күн бұрын
The fabric softener works because of the oils that are in it. Just about any oil works as an anti sudsing agent. Things like coffee creamer work because of the oil in it or even whole milk because the high fat content. Just don't over do it with the oil and try to remove any clothing to prevent staining them
