Had to replace my motor in my 22 year old Kenmore as it was very loud... This video helped a lot! Was impossible to remove the blower wheel from the motor so I did the drill method you showed. Took a bit of work but finally got it off and replaced both the motor and the wheel. Dryer works and sounds great again! All for under 100 bucks! Thanks!

There is another method to try before cutting the fan. I had stripped the plastic square center post of my fan trying to remove it the 'correct way' with two wrenches, and I couldn't get a grip on it. Put an adjustable wrench on the front of the motor directly behind the pulley that the drum belt goes on. There is a tiny flat spot the wrench can grab onto. Rotate the wrench/shaft so that it hits one of the dryer walls. This will prevent the shaft from turning. Not being able to turn is super critical. Then (with gloves ON because the metal is sharp as hell !!!) grab the fan and twist it hard. I had to put my body weight into it. It will likely break free. Make sure you are twisting the correct direction. Most of these fans have reversed threads. After I used a wrench to stop the shaft from turning, I was able to twist it until it broke free. I had to use both hands, and I know if I had not been wearing protective gloves it would have cut the hell out of me. Get cut resistant gloves and save a trip to the ER! Saved me from having to spend $15 on another fan, so I was happy.

What if your motor is still good? How do you get the remaining square plastic piece off the motor shaft so that you can install a new blower wheel on the existing motor?

I would suggest carefully cutting it off and reusing the motor if possible.

If your blower wheel is broken on the shaft you will need to take the tub out. Use a 1 inch wrench (or vise grips would work) to hold the shaft.. Use a pair of channel locks on the piece that is broken off on the other end of the shaft. Turn CLOCKWISE to remove. No need to cut it off as it will usually spin off just fine and you might damage the threads by trying to cut it off.

Thanks Sheridan. Just keep in mind this video is found seized on whirlpool blower wheels. Broken and Seized on being two different problems.

I just go hammer time on it takes about five good hits not exactly on the center but do around the core of it and leave the core behind. Pretty much leaves behind same size piece he had drilled. all the plastic will break easily with a hammer no chisel or anything else needed seriously 20 seconds and im cleaning up the mess and pulling the motor out

Put the drill in reverse it will cut through the plastic without the big bite

I removed it by hammering around the center of the plastic blower wheel in an attempt to physically break it off. Shame on Whirlpool for implementing a horrible non-service-friendly design.

Okay from the service repairman. do you want me to replace your blower wheel n motor with a new motor and new blower wheel okay thank you that'll be $350 to $450 depending on your make and model. Oh so you're going to DIY well take it from me it is a far easier and less expensive repair if you find the entire motor and blower housing together on eBay and replace the whole assy especially if you have a GE of course if you're a DIYer and you have unlimited time to waste you could definitely follow this video. Out in the field unfortunately most of us repair guys if we encounter this type of blower wheel we would have to chip away and break it apart at the customer's expense of course😮😥💩
