Man I was considering the Dehancer bloom and halation plugins, but after seeing how much softer the black pro mist filter makes harsh lights in/outside of frame I think I will invest in one of those instead! Great vid:) Also cool with the homemade diffusion, love the character it gives!

Thank you for your comment and compliment! Don't get me wrong, Dehancer is GREAT for bloom and halation (and their whole tool suite is a great addition for color grading), but the filter being able to interact with sources outside of the frame add something to the image for sure. They're different tools that do similar things for different reasons (I have a few videos on dehancer on my channel if youre still curious about it). I really appreciate the feedback! :)

that's why this big bags for news / doc shooting exists in first place. like the old broadcast cameras, they were ready to shoot all the time. you open the bag, slap a battery on the camera, ready to go. on my standard to go camera rig, usually there is always installed: lens, battery (v-mount-adapter), a monitor already finished cabled for signal and power, a shotgun mic, a LAV-Mic receiver, (both already cabled!), and a video transmitter + tripod plate of course. so I arrive on set, put up the tripod, put the camera on it, turn it on, got a picture. if client wants to see something, I just open the iPad, connect to the video signal from the camera, ready to go. depending on the job of course, but if you need 15 minutes for setting up your camera and I need 3 minutes, I can even think about setting up or blocking some light or have a chat with the person in front of the camera.

@new2guitarplay96Ай бұрын
@@TrentonHoshikoCinematography I received the second one and it is also there! In order to see it, you need to actually carefully pick up the stand and turn it upside down and then you may see that there is a large washer there that acts as an additional stopper.. to ensure that the pole would never break through or fall through, even when supporting a lot of weight! I am thinking that this is why the washer has a there! It is just an additional ’stopper’ for the main pole in case it gets close or surpasses its weight bearing capacity! Doesn’t seem to affect the use and safety aspect of the stand! Have a great weekend!

I can’t help but fell this was way too labor and time intensive. (Not to mention the hidden cost of things like the wheelbarrow, scale, hose and tools, and the impracticality of doing this in an apartment or similar space.) I’ll definitely be looking for another fill material that has less moisture and organic material from the onset.

This DEFINITELY falls under a "more time than money" paradigm for using the gravel, or is great if you also like DIY projects haha. For a wheelbarrow replacement, this can be done with buckets - but without an outdoor space, yes this is not 100% ideal. I mentioned birdshot in the video, that is a great alternative, one other option I recently discovered is aquarium pebbles, although it is definitely more costly than outdoor gravel. Do you need a c stand to hold diffusion? What about a cheap mic or light stand and a clamp? Diffusion silks are light--or are they? And ehat about negative fill - I'm assuming that's cheap too... I'm new to this
@TrentonHoshikoCinematography4 ай бұрын
Always good to ask, especially when new! :) I would REALLY recommend a c-stand, not just from a functionality standpoint, but also a safety standpoint. C-stands are heavy and can be easily weighted. While diffusion silks are seemingly light, they are kind of deceptive because the sturdy metal frame is decently bulk, and more importantly, it is long so it changed the balance. Same for any grip head mounted light modifiers, and flags are even heavier because of their heavy fabric material. I would not use a mic stand or a light stand for these things. A light stand, in my opinion, can be used with a simple clamp to hold a pizzabox, bounce card, or reflector, if it is properly weighed down, but anything that is extending more is better off on a c-stand 99% of the time. We want to avoid tipping risks as much as we possibly can. If you can't afford a c-stand, there are things called T-stands, which is really a crossbar on a lightstand - you can clamp diffusion materials (like unframed silks) to these and weigh them down for a safe alternative to c-stands because the weight isn't being levered by an arm in the same way. IMO a c-stand or two is a really worthy investment if you can afford it/have the space, and want to manipulate light and have flexibility in doing so. I have some more videos coming on real soon about diffusion material alternatives, safe alternative mounting, etc. so keep an eye out for them. They talk about a lot of what I've written above but go deeper with examples. :)

A question about these filters; I do like the halation/bloom effect from these, but sometimes the loss of contrast is a bit too much I think. If I compensate for the loss of contrast by adjusting the contrast ratio in post, will I also lose a matching amount the halation effect?
@TrentonHoshikoCinematography4 ай бұрын
You shouldn't lose it all, but it will change it some. I find using a very low-level diffusion filter helps maximize the desired effect while reducing the contrast reduction, because sometimes I also don't like it. There are also LOTS of different filters for these blooming effects, not all effect contrast as much as Black Pro Mist. The link below is a great chart to show Tiffen's offerings and their relative effects. I would say that increasing the contrast too much in post may make the lights look "funny" and too halo-y, so I'd experiment with that before committing to shooting with or without the filter. Chart: preview.redd.it/ive-read-that-the-tiffen-black-glimmer-glass-retains-more-v0-xtucq0egvxr81.jpg?auto=webp&s=0773a892204d3b8b44329ba8dccface4d6f1740c Hope that helps! -Trenton

Does a combination of softbox & silk (closer to subject) lead to an additional increase in softness? I seem to be hearing such different takes on this.
@TrentonHoshikoCinematography4 ай бұрын
Mostly, yes. But there are a few considerations to dial it in. It depends on the size of the softbox and the size of the silk/diffusion, and the proximity to the subject. If the silk is right next to the softbox, further from the subject, the softness wouldn't change as much because of the size of the diffusion relative to the subject, like what is shown in this video. But the additional material would scatter the light more, making it softer, while costing you some exposure. If you diffusion is closer to the subject then it would benefit from both. If your diffusion is smaller than your softbox and the softbox light spills around it, that light would be as diffused as the softbox would be from that distance, while what passes through the silk is further scattered and the "new" source of the silk is closer to the subject, both in turn making that part of the light softer. And, it would feather the change between what is being double diffused and just softbox diffused more. Doubling up on diffusion can also help by using different materials with different light-scattering properties to further customize your lighting look. I would say that to make using a softbox and additional diffusion/silk work best though, use a diffusion material that is larger than your softbox to maximize the surface area of the "final" source before the light hits your subject. That is how to best use both to make your light softer by maximizing both the size effects and scattering effects. I have a video that might help with this, too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4mygGuHZ7Slq7M Hope that helps! -Trenton

From what I see of the review it's the best unit out there. I have the Ambitful AL-16 which has a better system for adjusting the gobos as well as control of the lens and filters. Another point is the heat that is generated by these units. The Wellmaking lacks any vents to help dissipate the heat whereas the Ambitful does have vents. Perhaps you should compare the two optical snoots sometime.

3 other thoughts I want to add that I thought of while filming extra examples: -I do have one that sometimes has a very slightly warmer tone than the other lamps, however it was not enough of a minute difference for me to return it/have it be a noticeable issue. LED temperatures sometimes affect the color. The others all seem to match each other, but as I said in the video I don't have a color meter to be 100% sure about color variance. -The bowens mount is tight, which can make getting accessories on slightly slower, but I prefer the mount to be snug rather than loose. Using the 2x fresnel on the V2 feels better than on the V1. -This lamp paired with the Aputure 2x Frensel in particular is a really versatile and powerful setup, especially for the price! Let me know if you have any questions!

It's possible you've mentioned this before, but where does one get a fake head to use as a stand-in? How durable is it? Does it collapse for easy storage, or is that going to add another full box to my kit?
@TrentonHoshikoCinematography7 ай бұрын
I got the two I have off of amazon a few years back. Wig stores and hair cutting training places/stores will sell them too. I am careful with them so they don't get scuffed, the material is a soft-ish plastic, but they have definitely taken tumbles before and have been fine, but I wouldn't just throw them around if you care about scuffs, etc. These do not collapse/inflate, so it would take up space, however, when paired with a light stand to adjust height the ease of getting a stand-in for lighting and focus is so useful/quick. My only problem with them is that the skin tones can look a bit off on camera sometimes, I *think* that might be a product of them using color pigments to color them and they just simply reflect light differently than skin, color wise. Otherwise, lighting with them as stand-ins works as you'd expect.
