i've been living a semi-retired life here in bangkok for 3 years. I'm an asian expat in my 30s. I'd say that once you discover the issues in bangkok, you'd think twice about settling down here. The main problem is the city design, as in the complete lack thereof. This city is a total disaster when it comes to getting around. Dead-end soi, totally unwalkable pavements, horrendous drivers, monster roads and highways and massive traffic jams. You can't get anywhere except those near BTS stations. Some areas around canals are slums and are no-go zones, which makes it hard to get to places without driving. Thailand also has the 2nd highest road fatality in the world. Second is the environment, and again, the complete lack thereof. There is no single public "square" in bangkok. There are no parks except lumphini, chatuchak and benchakitti, which are tiny islands of green in the middle of smog. Summers get to 40C+ hot, then it floods easily once the rainy season starts. In the winter, air pollution goes above safe limits. Third is the cost of living. If you're living a nomad lifestyle, it's cheap. Once you want to own a house, have a kid, then send that kid to a decent school, your costs will start ballooning. Thai public schools are out of the question since they are utterly useless. The only option are bilingual and international schools which can cost $20k yearly. Hiding behind all these, is the elite, military and monarchical class who plunders society with impunity. You can see signs of corruption everywhere, from the disastrous road quality, lack of street lighting in some areas, lack of law enforcement, etc. This is a complete disaster of a city. I live here only because it's my least worst option personally. The benefits are that there are many kind people here, and the weather, at least compared to London where I used to live.

Its a Shame the Park by Central World you can't walk all the way to Paragon yet... hopefully one day they'll make it happen...
