3.0 is the best engine they put into a ranger. that does not mean the 3.0 is a good engine. the cam synchro taking out the oil pump is what did mine in. if I had known what the slight inconsistent ticking noise was I would've fixed it but I thought it could've been anything at the time.

What are the major differences between the KLX300R and the KLX300S? (I.e. is it the same engine, frame and suspension?) The S is about 25 pounds heavier for one, but I can't see how the lights and mirrors account for all that weight. The S of course does not have to be trailered every time you want to go down a paved road, so I am wondering what the advantage to the R is.
@GenderSkinsАй бұрын
There was an issue with the earlier 3.0 liter engines, but Ford did fix those issues. So if you order a 3.0 liter for a 2001 and newer you will get a more reliable engine. As for the fuel lines those are a 5/16th line with both 5/16th and 3/8ths fittings, so you have to buy a 3/8th to 5/16th fitting for one line if you stick with the factory connectors. But I would recommend swapping over to 6AN to quick connect fittings, and running high pressure fuel injection line as those hard nylon lines will break if you do not buy the correct quick connect fittings.

I would look at getting the bigger fuel tank while you’re at it. You’re already in there, might as well… you’ll have plenty of space for it with your new glass panel.

A tip: Install a hinge at the bottom of your new panel so that you can swing the whole thing down to work on it.

I installed an RV fuel cap on all 3 tanks. I had a friend machine the adapter ring, and then offer it for sale through Thorp Central. No welding required and it works great.
@MotoFlightGuy2 ай бұрын
I knew cubes offered that adapter. That's exactly what I would use on a flying airplane. But since I already had to take a bunch of stuff out, I figured it's just as easy to pull the tank for welding
@bobfried19032 ай бұрын
There is a much easier solution for an excellent, safe gas cap that doesn't require welding. An adapter ring is bolted and/or Pro-sealed into place. The new high quality ACS cap attaches to the ring.
@arrow72122 ай бұрын
Apart from the graceful manner displayed in weighing that panel, I have another CG related, but also, legitimate question about the fuel tank. So, 174 pounds evaporating from such a forward position - is that something that's considered often with the Thorp, or is it no biggie, CG like a cub?
@MotoFlightGuy2 ай бұрын
@@arrow7212 the fuel tank is forward of the CG but not very much. It's difficult to see without the wings mated to the fuselage but part of the fuel tank actually sits over the leading edge. I've not actually done a W&B on a thorp but I believe the CG shift for fuel burn is minimal. Some guys are actually building 40 gallon tanks for them now
@streettosky59832 ай бұрын
It is a thing for sure, especially if you are putting baggage in the back. I have a light engine in mine (O-290) and with two hefty guys and baggage behind me, as fuel reduces the CG does move aft. This was a consideration as to why I decided not to fly to OSH this year. Aft CG with steep turns and at a high weight and possibly lower speeds than optimal is a bad idea.
@MotoFlightGuy2 ай бұрын
@@streettosky5983 the guy who's doing my fuel tank welding also mentioned the same issue with aft CG while loaded for Oshkosh. He has storage under the seats, and made a compartment for his tie down claws to store up in the engine mount to offset some of the weight forward.

@@MuggaVirtualPilotMVP that's something I forgot to mention in this video but yes, I'm re-doing the firewall insulation, well all of the insulation. What they had in the airplane was cheap hobby foam and definitely not something fire resistant.

Great work on the Thorpe. Won't take you long and you will be in the air with it. Regarding the paint strip, I can't stress how important it is that you flush all of the lap joints as thoroughly as possible after the strip.... speaking from experience here! Then go do it again and again to be sure! The paint stripper has a tendency to work it's way into the joints and anywhere it remains will become a future location of corrosion. Likewise, when you do your AlumiPrep (acid-wash) you will need to flush the airframe as much as possible as it has the same impact as paint-stripper, in that it will work away into the future causing corrosion. From camera shots into the tail/aft fuselage section, you have plenty of old oil/gunk laying in there, which is actually the best corrosion protection going, maybe think twice about removing it. Have seen first hand airframes that were cleaned out, and then only to later start corroding because of cleaning agents and other chemicals used.

Will the FAA allow you to get a repairman cert for this aircraft after you put it back together of will you have to get an A&P to sign it off? Will the builder sign it off for you? Thanks for the video.
@MotoFlightGuy2 ай бұрын
@@amtpdb1 I won't be able to get a repairman cert. This is a registered aircraft with an airworthiness certificate. The only person who could do the condition inspection is the original builder or an A&P. So I will have an A&P do assisted condition inspections on it.
@MuggaVirtualPilotMVP2 ай бұрын
There is a pathway available for you, it would require a little work, but could make life much easier for you in the long-run. You are considered the original builder when you construct 51% of the airplane, therefore work out what 51% is. As per the rules, you could de-register the airplane and surrender its airworthiness certification, perform the 51% construction and apply a new Experimental Data-Plate and apply for new registration/airworthiness certification. Centre section, fuselage work, engine frame/engine, avionics, electrical, paintwork etc.... not hard to get to 51% and it is within the rules.
@arrow72122 ай бұрын
Or he could just waltz in and get his A&P. Not like the guy couldn't pull that off in his sleep. Always complicating the obvious, and trivializing the momentous (Kemper) ... You should move over here and run for Congress, I'll vote for ya. ;)
@MotoFlightGuy2 ай бұрын
@@MuggaVirtualPilotMVP while people have done this, it's frowned upon and would take a DAR that is willing to sign off on it. To get an airworthiness certificate issued on an EAB here is an involved process and requires a full build log and detailed documentation on how the airplane was built.
@MuggaVirtualPilotMVP2 ай бұрын
@@MotoFlightGuysure some can frown, but it doesn't make it illegal. You're just building a new airplane within the rules, and using assemblies from a previously airworthy aircraft to lessen the build time - which you are entitled to do. Of course, all this predicates on being able to satisfy the 51% rule and yes you will need your DAR to be in agreement. Just another pathway you can take. Alternatively - as @arrow7212 states - go in and get your A&P as that could open up all kinds of opportunities for you!
