Howdy and thank you for the blanket compliment 😊❤. My ostomy is permanent. I have several autoimmune diseases and UC/Crohn’s were two of them. Back in 2018, I cut my leg on my late Mother’s ramp and the wound healed fine. 2 months later I woke up to pain, swelling, and redness. I went to ER and learned that an infection had been brewing in my leg. I was prescribed an antibiotic called Clindamycin and apparently the ER Doctor, nor myself knew that this antibiotic should NEVER be prescribed to anyone with UC, or Crohn’s. My disease was very well controlled with medication and had never given me problems. The antibiotic gave me an infection called C-diff which hospitalized me for a month. From that day forward things continued to spiral downward for a year. I was in and out of the hospital and my Sister had to move in to care for our Mother as I dealt with that. She passed that July. That November I ended up hospitalized from severe inflammation and they almost gave me an emergency ostomy. Fortunately, steroids helped and I was able to be discharged, but was told by the surgeon that I needed the ostomy because my colon would eventually rupture. Surgery was scheduled for the following month and I learned everything about ostomies that I could while preparing for surgery, so I was ready and happy that the nightmare was about to finally end. I was very sick. During surgery my colon ruptured and I almost died. I spent the next 3 months in the hospital and later rehab. I made it though 😊. I actually love my ostomy. They are nothing like they used to be. Stay tuned for my October 5th episode. I am an ostomy advocate helping others facing surgery, and to dispel the many myths and stigmas associated with having one. October 5th is World ostomy awareness day and I hope to be able to share a short presentation explaining how ostomies saves lives. Thank you for asking about it. That was many years ago and that is the only experience I have with it so I'm sure the technology today is far superior to back then.
