Which was the best airplane? Let's ask the enemy which plane they feared the most. First of all the Germans didn't face all the airplanes of the Allies; only the Japanese did. (The Japanese did meet the Soviets a few months before the end of the war.) The highest-scoring Japanese ace who survived the war said they feared the Corsair the most. He, Saburo Sakai, was speaking for all Japanese fighter pilots. Sakai had a very healthy respect for the Navy/Marine pilots. After his first encounter with Naval aviation fighters (F4Fs), he felt that they were the best and most disciplined of all. Then came the Marines (Naval aviation) in the Corsair and the legend was born. The Me 262 was great but entered late in the war in small numbers.

Interesting what would this guy say if he saw IL-76 which had been produced in Uzbekistan during Soviet era? Again, Russian? :)) There was no anything like Russian, Uzbek, Ukrainian, etc. when SU existed but Soviet ;)

The Austrians used thicker ribs & spar flanges to strengthen the wings of their Albatros as well as rounding off the nose and removing the spinner. This increased aerodynamic & propeller efficency. So the Australia aircraft were faster and stronger. Though their schwarzlose machine guns were less reliable. Most polish Albatros were Austrian not german models.

"What we _call_ the operations floor"? That's weird; it's not the actual term for it? If that's just the "loving nickname" then what's the real term: the one for which he wouldn't feel kike he'd have to say "what we call..." about?

My father was a private pilot and engineer at Ford and was the person assigned to visit Molt and evaluate the Aerocar. He flew it several times and said it was a pretty good airplane, but a lousy car. Not surprising since Molt wasn't an automotive engineer. Molt came to visit us in Detroit several time and insisted that I call him "Uncle Molt." We'd catch up with him every year at Oshkosh. I remember once going to dinner with him, my Dad, and some of Molt's friends. At the table were Dick (RIP) and Burt Rutan, wives, some VP from General Dynamics, and other notables.
