How Do Artists Retire?

Ultimate Paper Mache

Күн бұрын

So, I told a few people that I was ready to retire. I'm of an age when people usually do, after all. But what would 'retirement' actually look like, if I kept doing the same things I'm doing now? I have two hobbies - gardening, and designing paper mache sculptures and masks. I don't expect to stop doing either one of them, so how would retirement be any different?
Are you an artist who retired from your business? Do you know anyone who has, or have you ever thought about how it would work? Let us know in the comments below.

Would you ever consider doing your art just for yourself and family, but give up the business end of selling your work? In my case, if I stopped the business I'd have twice as much time to make stuff. That is sounding more attractive every day. 🙂

I am 78 and retired from the job that payed me regularly. I always longed to have more time to do my art and now I have it! I retired from long commutes and stress but will never retire from doing my art. I am now a full time artist and love it!

I retired from full time teaching 15 years ago and moved to a rural area and then taught myself how to print Linocuts. During lockdown I started making Swimming themed linocuts which have proved very popular.. I sell via my website and exhibitions. I also try other forms of printmaking such as Collagraphs or wood engravings. I find it keeps me busy plus my garden and choir and knitting too. I have to do some thing every day or I get sad! I think those of us who have craft and art skills are very fortunate.. much more satisfying than staring at a screen!

I agree - I've seen studies that connect screen time with depression, especially for kids. But I think that's true for us older folks, too. I watched the short video on your channel, and I can see why your linocuts are a big hit. Very nice! 😊

I think the word ‘retirement’ is what is throwing us off! I retired from teaching where I used puppetry all the time and then just continued… and opportunities keep coming to perform or workshops for kids. I love the idea that it’s on my time. Nonetheless, there is no getting away from feeling pressured at times…. That’s life. I love your work and wish you would offer a zoom course of 4 weeks ! We all want to learn more!! 😊

I have thought of creating a mask-making course. But so far, I haven't been able to find the time. I like the idea of being in a classroom where some of the material was taught by a puppet - that sounds a lot more fun than the school I went to! 😊

As a full time artist and running my own business for 30 years, I retired from the business--galleries, shows, accounting, marketing, etc...I just make art and send it out into the world. I am so much happier and my art is also happier!!

How do you send it out, without the galleries? My daughter is an oil painter, and she spends far more time on the business than on painting. She has some nice galleries, and teaches online classes, and goes to plein air events. I'm sure she's looking forward to the days when she can stay home and concentrate on her art.

❤ Wow, you don't look 75 years old!!! I will be 61 in April, and I get to retire from my j.o.b. when I turn 63. People often ask me "won't you get bored?" or "you are going to come back and work a while longer, aren't you?" The answer is NO! I want to start crafting! Making art has always been a dream of mine, and I look forward to finally being able to do what I want. Thank you for the inspiration!

I think you could find an editor for your videos. It may take a couple tries to get good communication. But, editing is an artform in itself. Also, find someone who wants to assemble and sculpt one of your masks on camera. Then you could spend your time creating. Film when you want. In other words, bring in some help. There is an artist out there who would think they had died and gone to heaven if they could get a gig with you doing what they love.

I'm a retired engineer aged seventy and happily retired into my art. Granted, I have a bit of FU money and don't need to earn off my art, but it's the creativity that keeps the mind young. I find I'm now just getting into my artistic swing and I need to experiment. This is an easier process without peer pressure. Paper Mache is the perfect medium for this as it's cheep and, dare I say semi permanent? So I, for one will miss your regular updates and insights, but I also understand your need to pull back. Your body of work is well documented on this site and will be available for time immemorial. So just chill out and and enjoy relaxing into your RETIERMENT ART.

Retirement art - I like that. 🙂 It sounds like you're having fun in your retirement. And by the way, people often tell me they've found paper mache items at antique stores that are over 100 years old. If you seal them and keep them dry, there's no reason why a paper mache sculpture can't be considered truly permanent, instead of 'semi.'

OMG Jonni! I feel your struggle. I still work a full time job and just trying to find time to do art can be a challenge, much less filming and editing content. I also find that breaking up the creative flow with trying to capture “the best shot” or “ the most important stuff” is also hard and I usually end up with 8-10 hours of video that has to be sorted before a quality video can be edited. They say it takes about an hour to edit for every minute of content, so you’re doing pretty good 😊. Ultimately, if you enjoy it keep doing it and don’t let the online world pressure you into doing it their way. You are so fun to watch and I enjoy every minute of your videos no matter how often you post them.

Great topic❣️ Thanks for talking about it. Retirement is a choice that we can all make to continue creating at a pace that’s enjoyable. Flexibility is important in order to eliminate the stress. Production can be so time consuming and setting our own boundaries is important to our mental health. I’ve been able to retire and am recently widowed. I had to make some choices that would bring my spirits back to life at 69 years young. I experiment with the things that are the most enjoyable for me. Also, I’ve realized personally, that I don’t want to be stuck on a video production schedule merry-go-round. I’m not monetized and I like it that way for now. I’ve started going back to my costume studio and in the process of cleaning it out so that I can have fun over there and be re-inspired to play with the other things I love so much. Meanwhile, I can still have my Etsy shop and eventually go back to visiting Renaissance Faires once more. A little rest and rejuvenation goes a long way. I can feel myself becoming more optimistic where I once felt so uncertain. Bottom line….doing what feels good in our hearts and minds will create a positive outlook going forward into retirement. I wish you comfort, joy and peace of mind in your retirement journey. 💖

Retire? And then do what? Everything you now do - create things and garden! I think you may be feeling stressed about the technical end of your business and as some others have commented, hire someone to take care of that for you. You can certainly reduce the number of projects and even cut back on posting videos. But an artist never truly retires, its in your DNA and blood. Don't get caught up in the "I SHOULD" be doing this or that! xoxo

I don’t think artists can ever retire. We love making things and that’s really the love of the art. Retiring can happen at any point whether gaining back time, vacationing, finding new hobbies and sometimes it’s just taking breaks to do whatever you want and coming back to make videos whenever you wish as well

Retirment is from FDR and the depression, to open jobs for young people. Richard Peeler, ceramic artist and professor, went from throwing clay to turning wood on a lathe. Art to me is life. This reminds me "those who can-do, those who can't-teach." You are teaching, fine if you slow down, let this be something you share without pressure to produce.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 6 ай бұрын
I didn't know that about FDR - but before then, more people lived in the countryside in multi-generation homes. Maybe older people slowed down when the younger ones started taking over the chores? I do have a friend my age who still works in a factory, and another one works in a big box store. But it makes me tired just thinking about it. 🙂

You will never retire, you love your paper mache projects too much! And that fun activity is what's keeping you looking way younger than you are! I know nothing of the process of making videos for YT, but you could make as many art projects as you want and like, and if the process of filming them is not the complicated part, you could film them all and then maybe editing and posting just one or two? That way, you would still be making a lot of fun stuff and much less of the no so fun stuff. And if filming is complicated too, just film one or two to edit later. Keep it fun, if you need to post a bit less videos to keep it fun, do it! You should not feel any pressure doing what you love!

Hello young lady! You are such an inspiration. I hope that if or when you retire in any manner, or to what degree, that you just continue to enjoy the gifts you were given however you can. You owe none of us anything. You must follow your path. Creating art is simply part of who we are so you can’t really just give it up….although it definitely might look different as we move through the decades. Although selfishly I don’t want you to retire though lol! 😉😂😂 I know Doreen’s work and have been inspired by her being in her 90’s and still using her gifts as well. I’m 61 and think often about whether or not I’m getting to old for this stuff lol, but then ladies like you pop into my mind to remind me that it is not about age but about the enjoyment of what we were given. I will paint and sculpt until my body says I can’t whether I make money at it or not. I’d rather buy a tube of paint than most any practical thing so I’ll just keep on going till I can’t. Lol. However, I don’t have an online presence and that…..is a whole different beast to conquer so I have no words of wisdom for you for that! 😂😂 Just be you. We love you.

I work full time and recently started a youtube channel to try to join the online crafting community. I don't plan to make money at it. I selfishly hope you keep posting videos because I love them. I'm still trying to figure out a way to get the benefits of a community without all the work of producing videos that I don't really like.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 6 ай бұрын
That's an interesting question. I don't joint online communities, because I have a hard time keeping up with my online business. "Extra" time goes into the garden, taking care of the animals, etc. We have several artists in my small town, and I haven't had time to meet up with them. If I ever do retire, that will be one of my priorities. Do you have any local art classes or community events that you could get involved with? Otherwise, maybe a Facebook group would help out. But don't worry about the quality of your first videos - it takes a long time to get used to making them, so just turn on the camera whenever you're doing something interesting, and share. You'll eventually find your 'groove,' as we used to say back in the day. 🙂

i think when youtubers get editors to edit their videos they usually make small takes, and maybe hold up a sign at the beginning about what take it is so it’s easy to piece everything together.

Yes - they're probably a lot more organized than I am. I just turn on the video and start making something, making it up as I go along. I end up with hours of video that has to be cut into a 10 minute video, and that's not how reasonable people do it. 🙂

I am 67, and I didn’t start really getting into art until I was over 50. I can’t imagine retiring until I physically can’t do anymore. I have severe arthritis in my neck and fingers. But if I can’t do mosaics anymore, I will probably switch to something else. I’m not really selling my work to make money. I just want to make more art, and there is only so much room for things. So, if things sell, good. I usually use the money to purchase classes. I am also a gardener, like you. My mosaics and gardening are all I want to do. I don’t think you should feel compelled to put out a video every week or so. You could say, you are going to only do one per month maybe. Maybe another paper mache artist could do editing for you. Maybe they could use the video you shot and work from that. They make the project. And then they could figure out what’s important and what isn’t. Anyway, just a thought. When😅 you are making art, like figuring out patterns and how to make something work, you are using your brain power and being very engaged. I am hopeful that this will keep memory problems away. At least that’s my hope. But you have to keep playing. I hate the thought of not seeing your videos or hearing from you. Even though I don’t do paper mache, I sculpt. And I find your videos are very helpful with that, along with using your cut out projects. So, I would miss your posts. But of course, you have to do what is right for you. Artists never retire, they just keep playing.

I knew at 5 years old I was going to be an artist when I grew up. And,indeed, I made living as an Art Director. I worked hand in hand with my staff doing everything...design, illustration, photography, layout...you name it. The thing that was different from the time between when I was five and I retired at 62 was freedom. After "work", I still do many of the things I did all those years but now I do it for me. I've focused on my painting as the main art but I still enjoy much of the other creative processes I did for many year. I don't sell anything or take requests. If someone likes something I create I say, "It's yours. I know where to get more." I also donate my services to non-profits and charity as a way to give back. And this has been the most total creative freedom I have ever experienced. One thing I always longed to do was to make music. So now, at 71, I'm learning to play the piano. It's pure joy. To me "retiring" hasn't been giving up anything. It's just changing focus. (Too bad we are not neighbors Jonni. When I was making videos for my old YT channel, my favorite part of the process was editing!)

You can look for editors. I think the best way is to film clips, give them some comments/guidelines and have them make it into a video for you. Choose the video edits you like and then do interviews to see who you best connect with. Editors are great but it’s really about finding someone who has a similar POV (point of view) so that the work dynamic flows
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 6 ай бұрын
To do that would take almost as much time as editing them myself. I know people can be organized and make it work easily, but it's hard for me to think about two things at the same time - both the project I'm working on, and the video itself. And I think you're right, that one needs to be organized in order to have someone else take over part of the editing.

If you can get on social security retirement, you will need to be careful with any money you make. Be sure to report it to the s.s. office, if you don't than things get hard. They can make you pay back overpayment's at the very least. But that said you are allowed to have hobbies. I love making Halloween props & I make it for myself at what ever speed my body can do it at & afford on low income, which is slow process. I literally will not sell anything I make. ( People don't want to pay artist a living hourly wage & liability risk is another reasons I won't sell my hobby.). I'm sorry to hear your retiring because I enjoy your video's . I usually learn something new from you & find inspiration from your work. That said, I'll be looking for that rabbit ( Easter or Beatrix Potter style) pattern. I'm guessing I should check your web site. Also if your interested, I'd love to see a Happy leprechaun ( about 3 to 4' tall) should you be looking for a new project to do for KZbin video's. Thanks for all the great content.

Not sure if this has been recommended but if you want your videos, edited by an outside person, then during the filming of your video, you just give the verbal demand to cut that portion out. You can say verbal demand, such as: stop here cut this out erase that or erase this, restart, starting over at step two, etc.
@UltimatePaperMache

That would work for an organized person who had a plan for the video before they begin. But the only way for me to have a plan is to do each project twice. I do that for my patterns, but for free projects I just make it up as I go along. That's probably one reason why it takes so much time to edit. 😊

I've already run out of room - that's one reason I moved towards digital download patterns. Once the patterns is on my store, I can give the paper mache sculpture to family or friends - or move a few of the older ones around to fit the new one in. I'm actually thinking about selling my house and getting a smaller one, with a big garage that I can fit a studio into. But then I might run into that other problem - running out of money. 😊

I sure do not have answer for you. I know you have your web site and KZbin but do you have any other things? I guess if they make money and you need money then you will have to see if they are worth the effort. If all the fun is out of it, then it is time to let go. All I know is that you are a great artist. You are a great teacher and you love help others. I know the web site and KZbin take time and work but if it means not make as many videos, just make one when you can. If you got sick, all of it would stop. I wish that I could help. You have been a great friend to me and to others. My health is not so good and it hurts to ask someone to do things for me. I just moved and I could not help. I am only 63 but nerve damage does not care. I hope to make some art this summer. You are a fun person and I will understand if you have to let go.

I'm amazed by the metalwork you're able to do with your health issues - I have nothing at all to keep me from working. I just occasionally get an urge to do something else. The longest I ever stayed on a 'real' job was 5 years, and I've been doing this for 13! I hope you're enjoying your new place. 😊

I retired and now spend my time in my workshop woodworking, trying to get into paper mache, epoxy/resin and gardening. These are things I've always wanted to do and never had time for. I take my time and enjoy myself. Family thinks i should sell what I do but I dont want it to become a job. You just do you and enjoy yourself. If you only do one video every couple weeks and your comfortable with it then do it. Retirement is your time.

I agree - you shouldn't sell your work unless you really need some extra income. People think that turning a hobby into a business will give you more time to create and make things, but you actually end up with less time to make things because you're running a business.

HOI Jonni, I would say do not put on videos o a regular base. What the editing of the videos, make them smaller in time, or chop, them up in pieces, your viewers still will want to see what you're doing. There are a lot of KZbinrs who do so. And retire from a hobby is nearly impossible, only from work, you know that what brings the money in to do your hobbies. I retire from work in October, but keep “working on my hobbies” ONLY when it gets in the way of what health concerns. Then you have to slow down. Love your work. Greetings from Peter, we spoke before, b.t.w. I am 66 years young.

But does that mean that we will not see you anymore?! But by the way, you can find many sites on internet where people put posts where they write what they want to do and they put as well the level of skill needed and the salary you will pay them. That way the other people respond to you with an email or on the site it self and they write kind of cv information and you choose a person. I new a perfect site but unfortunately i forgot. But jonni we really love you and we don't want you to stop this amazing work!

Thanks, Steven. You might be thinking of Fiverr or UpWork. I know there are people I could hire - I'll to try someone who can fix that reader's post issue. 😊

I hope you keep going in whatever capacity is appropriate for you ❤ What video editing software do you use? I use Shotcut. It seems fast to me but my videos are mostly time lapse. Nothing fancy.

I've been using Filmora for ages. It does everything I need it to, but I don't do anything fancy. Sticking with it is easier than learning a new program.

As I'm listening all I hear is someone talking themselves out of ' retirement'. Lol. When you are creative that brain or hands never stop. From another older person. 😄😄🎶🎶

I keep thinking you may benefit from hiring a high school or Community College student who could do your editing. You could pay them a bit and they could pad their resume.... plus you could include some KZbin adds to cover that cost . You might also increase your viewing numbers, especially with younger folks.

I agree - we need to make stuff. It's how I stay sane. But I'll keep making stuff even if I don't sell the stuff - and I'd probably have twice as much time to create if I didn't have to spend so much time on my business. Getting to that point probably won't be easy, though...
