Hi! So I have a cowhide that has some urine from my elderly dog and i was wondering if I could put it in a washing machine and then letting it air dry?
@anaperez97725 күн бұрын
I know its probably not the best thing to do, but I saw a woman do it to her cowhide and it turned out pretty good.
@BigBendSaddlery5 күн бұрын
Hello! We don’t recommend putting a hide in a washing machine. If there are patches or seams in the hide they may come out. Depending on size, the hide may also damage your machine. If you have to wash it, spraying it off with a hose and mild soap is best.

What kind of blue foam (I'm guessing) is that being used for padding in between the two layers of leather?
@BigBendSaddlery10 күн бұрын
Hello! It is a dense latex foam like you use under a sleeping bag

@BigBendSaddlery Thank you!!! I have made one breast collar and thought it should have had padding. I love how fast the gentleman in the video measured things out and moved forward. I measure a thousand times, I think. I look forward to seeing more work from Big Bend Saddlery.

Hello. I called you guys up after watching this video. I spoke with Cody. He was very nice and helpful. Although I didn't use the same methods described here on my dog's leash. I found that squeezing the cap off the rivet with a long nose plier did the trick. I'm guessing that rivets used with a dog leashes are far less quality than what y'all use. But the video inspired me that I could do this myself and I did. Thank you for posting this video and giving education and encouragement to us DIYers out there.

Great tip! I've been trying to replace mine. Unfortunately my favorite saddle does have hanger or strings .... any thoughts?
@outfitr9703Ай бұрын
I used to cut a little bigger slit further out on the string and pass the string thru both cinch rings and go over the horn with the slit.

I have split reins that I am repairing for someone. It also has this leather piece at the end that was tied on. One side has two holes and the other has a slit. How can I tie this together? The owner is wanting a concho type button for easy removal to switch out bridle. I am concerned about safety and possibly coming loose. I have looked at Chicago screws with a concho.

I've often wondered about the impact of braiding or not on a horse's back. But what about the saddle pad? If there is a saddle pad between the horse and braiding does that help, as the majority of us likely ride with pads or blankets, or is the braiding without proper lift still able to sore a horse even with a pad acting as... well, padding?
@BigBendSaddlery2 ай бұрын
Yes it can. Ever heard of the princess and the pea? It’s like that. Most pads are firm enough that the irritation is still there even with a good pad or blanket if the lacing is protruding down. Some of the high dollar impact gel type pads can help to a certain degree if the problem isn't real bad
@tinoyb92942 ай бұрын
Interesting. Can you comment on sores being created at the spine area at the very back of the saddle? Bridging? My saddle has FQH bars and I had to really pad up the saddle on skinny or shark fin horses to prevent this. Thanks.

I had removed the stirrups to replace them on an old saddle, not realizing just how hateful it would be to run the new ones. This is what I came up with to do as well, but I came online to look because surely there is a better way. Gotta say I'm disappointed that this is the only real way to do it, but also pretty pleased with myself that I figured it out!

With your decades experience I ask this question please: Is there a reason saddles can't be crafted from the start with stirrups having that slight angle twist? Thank you 😊
@BigBendSaddlery5 ай бұрын
Hello! Saddle parts are cut out of sides of leather which are flat. Also, to keep things straight and even it is best to cut things on a flat surface. After we are sure everything is correct, we can properly twist the pieces so that they are even and straight.

I owned Ranch Horse Outfitters/Paul Custom Saddlery for 15 years. Great info you have here. We always used the wood trees. I never liked the fiberglass trees because they have no "give" to them. Wish you had shown the correct place to measure seat size. People are so confused about that for some reason. Also wish folks understood that you can't get an accurate gullet width on a built saddle! LOL
