@antoinecadalen835521 сағат бұрын

@@mypassportlife Not really. Marseille (France's second biggest city) has its own rap music, which is very popular in Marseille and in France overall. Nowadays, the most popular rappers from Marseille are Jul and SCH, but the OGs are definitely IAM. There used to be a rivalary between them and a parisian group called NTM. The rivalery between Marseille ans Paris is still there, but it's not really about music, it's mostly about football (soccer). Paris doesn't really have its own popular music style. There are obviously rappers in Paris but their music doesn't have a very distinctive sound. And if there were a Parisian music genre, it would either be cabaret or chanson, but neither are them are popular nowadays. And by the way, the one who is the closest to this genres among the three artists you checked out is from Marseille's region, south eastern France (it's Clara Luciani). Gims and MC Solar both grew up in Paris region, even though none of them was born in France. In fact, Chat GPT gave you the names of artist who were about to perform in major parisian venues when you asked for popular artists in Paris but they are not necessarily the most popular parisian artists. Still, it did quite well providing you something etlectic and rather accurate. Clara Luciani does work in Paris and has been one of the best selling female artists in France since her first hit actually became one (the one you've listened to) and Gims is one of the best selling french rappers of all time (I would say he's number one since the actual number one, Jul, releases several albums per year, whereas Gims catalog only counts 5 albums and some other songs). MC Solar is also a good one because he's the founding father of french rap and well, he did grow momentum in the 90s. Now, if you want to check out songs from Parisan rappers who are currently popular, look for Werenoi (best selling album of 2024), PLK (2nd best selling album of 2024), SDM (7th best selling album in 2024) and Tiakola (only rapper nominated for best album at Victoires de la Musique in 2025, aka the french Grammys). Aya Nakamura is undoubtably another artist who grew up in Paris region you should look for if you want to hear what's popular in Paris region (and in France, and abroad). She performed at the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony and her performance is basically the most watched TV footage ever in France.

@@mypassportlife no not really, it’s less of a thing here in France. Of course there are regional songs but the pop in general is very diverse and it’s not because of cities. I can only think of one particular city inspired kind of genre, it’s Marseille’s rap (Marseillais rappers) Marseille is the second biggest city in France if you didn’t know, it’s in the south, it’s very beautiful (love it :3). It can be compared to Chicago and/or Detroit tho lol, the French TV usually compares it to Mexico City but they are exaggerating a bit 💀 but the climate is more like LA 😂

While using ChatGPT (which is a great idea), use it till the end to ask it more context into the Artist or its lyrics, like all the play on words in MC Solaar’s music. That might also help you avoid looking like a fool laughing out loud about breast cancer because you use one of the worst translation tool that exist, aka Google translate… It could also guide you into knowing which songs to react to : Gims’ 2010s music VS more recent ones that are very different

Bigflo and Oli are two brothers, they make a ton of good music too.Their most famous one is "dommage" but i peresonally love "sur la lune" and "autre part" among many others ofc. Also Gims was part of a group called "Sexion d'assaut" in 2010 (they're now separated since 2013) I used to listen to them a lot with my brother when we were younger. I looooved MC Solaar in the 90s, yes he's still around. One of the greatest rappers, his lyrics are smart and his play on words is like no one else's. Caroline, this song, is talking about an ex and the guy reminicing about their time together and him having a hard time seeing her with someone else. No swear words, no insults about women, no nudity, just smart rap.

In France, the lyrics are more important than music, so if you want understand all the subtilities of our culture, clic on traduction for the clips. Mc solaar was one of the first artists (in France) to sing in rap in the years 80's-90's, Gim's and Clara Luciani are artists of the 21 century. Our artists are very diversify because our culture is very diversify.The time of Edith Piaf is dead even if a certain type of artist copy her old style of music like Barbara Pravi (eurovision 2021).

Mc Solaar is old music, it's 90's early 2000s french rap, he is super known. This is like you asked chat gpt for an american artist and it told you Tupac or Biggie. xD 90s early 2000s french rap is amazing you should look into it, I'll give you some names but that's barely scratching the surface there's IAM (I recomend to listen to "La fin de leur monde" which is in my opinion the best french rap song, look into the lyrics they are heavy), you already know MC Solaar, there's also Suprême NTM, they are like to me the 3 corner stone of rap in France. La grenade is a metaphor for breast cancer, I can understand that it's funny as hell if you don't get the metaphor though. Gims was in a group with basically the whole generation that followed the 90s rap named Sexion d'Assaut and that would in my opinion mark the death of the french rap as it's a group made of people that grew up with 90s rap and rap will follow Gims exemple and regress (because yes what you heard from Gims here is considered rap in France. After that french rap became crap. The biggest recent names I know in rap are Gims, JuL, Aya Nakamura that should give you an idea of how much it has regressed when 90s french rap was nearly as good as US rap. Someone has said Orelsan in the comments and it's one of the decent modern one. Now for things that have nothing to do with rap/hip hop, we are really good in electro in France, most famous we have Daft Punk, David Guetta, lesser known I'd recommend Bob Sinclar, Justice, Madeon, Kavinsky, M83, C2C, Caravan Palace, Carpenter Brut. Biggest french artists since post WWII I would say are: -Johnny Hallyday, basically french Elvis Presley if he lived until 2010s, was at his height in the 60s before falling off in the mid 70s, coming back in the mid 80s until the 2000s where he rode off his earlier success -Claude François, it's old french pop from the 60s, a disco period in the 70s before going into early french pop of the 80s, it's hard to find an equivalent american artist but he marked his time. He "wrote" "My Way", he was a fan of Frank Sinatra and one of his greatest pride is knowing Sinatra "sung" his song named "Comme d'habitude" -Mylene Farmer is basically french Madonna, starting in the 80s really hard, kind of a rennaissance in the 2000s early 2010s going for a more Lady Gaga style
