Appreciate the update! Glad you're feeling better. I love the reddish highlights in that chocolate one. What a luxury for your customers to be able to see the process, and order very specifically what they'd like, based on your well-documented past work!

Never worked on an upright. Have to upcharge for the gallons of glue! I like circular cleats for the tuner trick as well - no fussing with orientation. Great job on the repairs! “Kinda like skinning’ a deer”😂 thanks for another great episode!

Nice chop to that ra-4 at the beginning! Interesting discussion of using light to get things ready for finish. Always neat to watch the spraying process.

Yes it is hard to get things done during the Holidays. Then to top it off I been sick all week. Not fun and won't be playing at church tomorrow. Bummer. Everything looks great Audey!

Hi Audey! I absolutely love the look of the mandolin you were playing in the beginning with the natural top and dark sides and back. I recently watched one of your videos from a couple of years ago (episode 106) where you discussed different stains and lacquers, and you mentioned that you'll only use minwax when applying a solid color (non-sunburst). Is this mandolin an example of when you would use minwax? If not, do you mind sharing how you finished it? I'm in the process of building my first mandolin from a kit and am going for this look.
@RatliffMandolins28 күн бұрын
Well, that's not Minwax. It's a stain from Mohawk (it's called "Ultra-Penetrating"). There are several different color choices and I ordered it on-line. I like the richness of the chocolate brown color. You can find it at any of the Mohawk dealers online or, I think, Amazon. I bought a bottle just to try it out and l think I'll buy more when it runs out. To answer your question, yes, this is an example of when one could use Minwax. Obviously, you wouldn't HAVE to, but Minwax would work. BTW, I only use one coat of Minwax as a stain. Minwax is sort of a stain and finish combined, especially if you apply several coats. I called their R and D department years ago and was told I could shoot lacquer over their product. But I've never felt comfortable shooting lacquer over a thick coat of Minwax, so I keep the Minwax to a minimum and shoot the lacquer same as if only on normal stain. Hope all that made sense and didn't make things more confusing..................
@dbobbitt81527 күн бұрын
That’s very helpful, thank you! Not confusing at all. Did you apply any stain to the top of the body or is that just the natural wood and a clear coat? It looks like there is a subtle stain on it but it’s a little hard to tell just from the video.

I have a Eastman 415bk. The tailpieces break on the Eastman mandolins. I've got a new tailpiece I put on there That Eastman sent me to replace it. They did not put the felt on the new replacement. Thinking I could just take the felt off the old one. Put it on the new one. You need new felt pieces to put on the new replacement. I've got a buzz and I know that's what it is. Not enough felt. But I love everything you said about what could be wrong!!
