Just a tip, the steering “sensor” senses for the resistance experienced by the steering wheel when it turns on its own. In other words, you need unto jiggle your steering wheel if no hands, or apply some weight on the wheel such that the motor in the wheel feels like someone is holding the wheel.

I've been using it for about 2 1/2 years. Still going strong. I use it every time I drive. I live in the very temperate pacific northwest and keep my car in the garage mostly. Might be a different story if my car sat in the blazing California summer sun all day. It's pretty easy to take down though. If I lived there I would probably unplug it and take it with me when I parked. I wouldn't want to get it stolen.

Hello, I was wondering if openpilot affects the fuel economy of rav4 hybrid?
@MixMasterMinix2 жыл бұрын
Only as much as a regular cruise control would. I use OpenPilot almost all the time and I still get around 40 miles to the gallon. Sometime a little more sometimes a little less. On this particular trip to Texas though I was getting closer to 32 MPG. I had a big container strapped to the roof which affected my aerodynamics. (You can see it in the intro to the first of this 3 part series, Day1) I also think that speed plays a big factor, Idaho through Texas freeway speed limits are 80 MPH, so I was often going 90 MPH (140 KPH) or more. At those speeds it's hard to get good mileage.

It is Stock. I haven't tried any of the other forks yet. ...and no they haven't implemented slowing down for corners yet unfortunately. I would also like them to slow down for speed zone changes. The Toyota can recognize speed limit signs and displays them on the dashboard. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible for the Comma to see that message and just the speed proportionally. Maybe someday.

As of now (March 5th 2022), none of the 2022 Rav4's will work with OpenPilot. Toyota started using a new supplier for their radar\camera assembly in the 2022 models. This new part hasn't been adapted for OpenPilot yet. When you first install OP it will 'fingerprint' your car to determine what make/model it is. That way it will know what kind of messages to expect from your car's electronics. This new part is the same as the 2018-2020 Camry, which is fully supported by OP. So if you can figure out how to fingerprint your 2022 RAV4 as a 2018 Camry you are all set. There is a way, allegedly, but it's pretty technical. Here is the discussion I am referencing. github.com/commaai/openpilot/discussions/23611 Follow along for updates. I believe a fix will be coming soon, next few months maybe, as more and more people buy these 2022 Rav4's, one of them is bound to be a software engineer with an interest in autonomous driving. OpenPilot is open source software which means the code is freely available. Anybody with knowledge can tinker with it and release new branches of code, opening up more supported vehicles or adding new features.

I am told there is a branch of OpenPilot that will work for 2022 Rav4's! When you are setting the device up from scratch, you can choose the manual install and use installer.comma.ai/alancyau/patch-2 when you get to the installer. I will test it out if I can find somebody in the pacific northwest with a 2022. Maybe a rental car? How long does it take for rental agencies to get the latest car models?

One user Fingerprinted the 2022 RAV4 Hybrid as a CAR.CAMRYH and got OP to engage. The bad news is fingerprinting one car as another car seems like a complicated procedure out of the reach of the average person. The only benefits I see over the car's built in features, is you don't have to hit resume after it stops, and you don't have to hold the wheel every so often. Is that correct? thanks
@MixMasterMinix2 жыл бұрын
You also don’t need lane markings. The built in Toyota Safety Sense needs clear lane markings. Not so with Open Pilot. I did a couple test videos to demonstrate on gravel roads and on the beach. I think you might be underestimating how awesome it is to resume after a stop though. That one alone sells it for me. Stop and Go rush hour traffic is where this thing really shines. Also it is pretty amazing to hit a long stretch of highway, take your hands off the wheel, and just chill, while your car drives you to the destination. There are other forks of the open source code that people are working on to add other features. No nudge lane changing for example.

Is it legal to use this where you live? I know in europe it’s definitely not, the people who do our mandatory technically inspections would get a heart attack if they’d see that 😁 (there are video of people using it in Europe, i think a German guy installed it and loves it, he put videos of his driving on KZbin…)
@MixMasterMinix2 жыл бұрын
It is legal. Maybe only because it isn't well know yet. This thing is really good at preventing driver distraction though. It tracks your eye movements and if you look away for just a couple seconds it will start getting mad. It is very hard to text and drive with this thing for example. It won't let you. Every car should have this.

roughly how many times did you have to engage (intervene) manually?
@MixMasterMinix3 жыл бұрын
Not very often. Once you're on the highway it's pretty smooth sailing. Generally you only have to take over when you come upon a turn so steep that they post the yellow caution signs to lower the speed limit. OpenPilot at the moment cant read those signs or recognize when it needs to slow down for a turn. If I had to guess roughly, I would say once per hour of driving.

A quick note on the music, while in TX on this roadtrip I got to see a band called The Hu play. I had never heard of them, but they were amazing. Obviously I can't include copyrighted material in these videos, so this isn't The Hu, but I wanted to share this vocal style with you guys.

Does open pilot handle lane changes when you use your blinker? And can you take it off the window when not in use? Or is it supposed to stay out once mounted
@MixMasterMinix3 жыл бұрын
Open Pilot is open sourced, which means people can mod it to do different things and post for others to use as long as it doesn't violate safety standards like driver awareness monitoring for example. There are forks available that will allow automatic lane changes with blinker. You set the blinker and it will wait 2 seconds or for a wheel nudge, whichever comes first. The mount sticks to the window with a fairly strong adhesive. The Comma2 can be easily removed on and off of that mount. In fact my Day2 video coming out very soon, shows me removing the Comma2 device while driving.

Thanks for watching! The hills coming out of eastern Oregon were brutal. A little too much for Open Pilot there, at least at the speeds I was travelling. I had to take over steering duty for a bit.
