I have a 22 rav 4 xle gas model. How do I know if I have this feature?
@MixMasterMinix2 жыл бұрын
As of now (March 5th 2022), none of the 2022 Rav4's will work with OpenPilot. Toyota started using a new supplier for their radar\camera assembly in the 2022 models. This new part hasn't been adapted for OpenPilot yet. When you first install OP it will 'fingerprint' your car to determine what make/model it is. That way it will know what kind of messages to expect from your car's electronics. This new part is the same as the 2018-2020 Camry, which is fully supported by OP. So if you can figure out how to fingerprint your 2022 RAV4 as a 2018 Camry you are all set. There is a way, allegedly, but it's pretty technical. Here is the discussion I am referencing. github.com/commaai/openpilot/discussions/23611 Follow along for updates. I believe a fix will be coming soon, next few months maybe, as more and more people buy these 2022 Rav4's, one of them is bound to be a software engineer with an interest in autonomous driving. OpenPilot is open source software which means the code is freely available. Anybody with knowledge can tinker with it and release new branches of code, opening up more supported vehicles or adding new features.

I am told there is a branch of OpenPilot that will work for 2022 Rav4's! When you are setting the device up from scratch, you can choose the manual install and use installer.comma.ai/alancyau/patch-2 when you get to the installer. I will test it out if I can find somebody in the pacific northwest with a 2022. Maybe a rental car? How long does it take for rental agencies to get the latest car models?

@@MixMasterMinix haha. Good luck getting a rental. I waited 4 months for mine to come in and the sales person told me they probably won’t catch up on orders for probably a year or more.

RAV4 is the way to go. The only thing to consider is towing capacity. The hybrid can only tow 1750, while a non-hybrid can tow 3500lbs. The hybrid has a lighter transmission I think.

Thanks for the video. Rav4 hybrid xle with openpilot is on my list, but these days it is really difficult to buy one Toyota hybrid without paying several thousands extra. I have been looking for a deal for 3 months and will probably wait until the end of this year.

Yes. I paid $2000 over MSRP for mine. This chip shortage and subsequent car shortage that’s driving up prices is probably going to continue through next year though and I didn’t want to wait.

I saw some good prices on long island. Depending where you're from might be worth a trip. I work there sometimes and plan to pick one up on my next trip. It's the only place I've found a prime. Glad for that because prime doesn't work with open pilot. I had planned to get a prime the week before I found that out but I couldn't locate one when I was ready to buy.
@MixMasterMinix3 жыл бұрын
@@cc-tb3st lucky break. I would have liked a Prime as well but you couldn't find one anywhere on the west coast. I didn't even know about OpenPilot when I put down a deposit for my Rav4 Hybrid which at the time was on a boat from Japan. That's why I 'm making vids now, to raise awareness about this awesome device.

@@dr_920 I'm from Texas also. That's how I got lucky. Went to the Toyota near the airport in Dallas and it was basically an empty lot. They had 1 hybrid that was the base Venza. If they had a Prime I would've messed up and gotten one that day. I also went to Houston and Austin the same week and called some dealerships while there. Luckily, nobody had one. I'll probably end up with a hybrid Highlander. Actually wanted a bigger vehicle than a rav4 but I wanted the tax credit the Prime offered. Unfortunately the sienna wont work with open pilot or I would get one of those. Kind of waiting hoping they will crack the prime ecu security.

Its fairly easy to install. No tools required. There are tutorial videos out there. I used one to install it myself. Highway heavy traffic is where this thing really shines.

The only benefits I see over the car's built in features, is you don't have to hit resume after it stops, and you don't have to hold the wheel every so often. Is that correct? thanks
@MixMasterMinix2 жыл бұрын
You also don’t need lane markings. The built in Toyota Safety Sense needs clear lane markings. Not so with Open Pilot. I did a couple test videos to demonstrate on gravel roads and on the beach. I think you might be underestimating how awesome it is to resume after a stop though. That one alone sells it for me. Stop and Go rush hour traffic is where this thing really shines. Also it is pretty amazing to hit a long stretch of highway, take your hands off the wheel, and just chill, while your car drives you to the destination. There are other forks of the open source code that people are working on to add other features. No nudge lane changing for example.

Hey Todd, glad I found you. Thanks for the videos. I live in this area too. I saw you drove down to Portland, how did OpenPilot handle Centralia? Do you ever travel north through Nisqually and JBLM? I was wondering how it handles the hills and valleys and some of the I5 curves. Thanks for the content!
@MixMasterMinix3 жыл бұрын
Hey neighbor! I5 driving is where this thing really shines. I have not found a curve or a hill anywhere on I5, between Marysville and Portland, that OpenPilot couldn't navigate with ease. There are 2 negatives I've found. 1. Coming into Chehalis and Centralia the speed limit changes from 70mph to 60mph as you know. The Toyota can see the new speedlimit sign with it's own camera and posts the change to the dashboard, I wish OpenPilot could take it's cue from that. If I'm doing 75 and there is a speed change, it should bring me down to 65. 2. Driving in the slow lane, it sometimes half commits to taking exit ramps on it's own and crosses the lane markers before steering back. A cop might think you were drunk. Also, sometimes if the car in front exits and slows way down in that lane the OpenPilot slows down too. I hear that software release 0.8.8 might address the exit lane stuff. I will have to test that out. Stay tuned!

Is it legal to use this where you live? I know in europe it’s definitely not, the people who do our mandatory technically inspections would get a heart attack if they’d see that 😁 (there are video of people using it in Europe, i think a German guy installed it and loves it, he put videos of his driving on KZbin…)
@MixMasterMinix2 жыл бұрын
It is legal. Maybe only because it isn't well know yet. This thing is really good at preventing driver distraction though. It tracks your eye movements and if you look away for just a couple seconds it will start getting mad. It is very hard to text and drive with this thing for example. It won't let you. Every car should have this.

Comma's. OpenPilot uses it's own. It's great, but with a caveat. You can't set your following distance like you could with stock TSS2.0. At least not in the main fork version of OpenPilot. Sometimes it allows too much of a gap.
@HeyElliott3 жыл бұрын
@@MixMasterMinix for whatever its worth - Shane Smiskol "Stock Additions" fork is a fantastic setup. It's using the latest 0.8.8 and it has on the fly adjustable follow distances. I will usually leave it on "Auto" for road trips, and change it to "Traffic" when in town - and it is a noticeable improvement on the Traffic setup for in town driving. Stock OpenPilot is way too far apart for our freeways here in Houston.
