At the time it did seem like SW was pushing out the old to bring in the new generation which IS how it goes, yes, but it also felt like there was an air of just simple dismissal of Steph which didn't seem so nice given her many years of service to the badge. One can say this is how football goes, but she was the captain for many years before SW came into the role, and it seems like it could have been given a little more grace and she deserved a little more love. It goes to show that everyone can replaced regardless of status, longevity, favoritism etc. All that is fleeting. It's a short career and times does fly, in 6 years the same will happen to Leah. The same could be applied to any job in this world. When they need you, they need you, after that you serve no purpose once yr past yr prime. It's a cruel world. We almost all experience this eventually in our careers, it's called ageism. But we can control how graceful it is done, the human element as you say. Throw that retirement party! Toast that employee! Give em their flowers! (It doesn't read as entitlement to me btw)

Didn't Houghton get the captaincy in similar circumstances? Mark Sampson came in and immediately took the captaincy from Stoney and gave it to Houghton . Rumour has it he didn't tell Stoney to her face and she heard it on the news

A good manager has to be able to communicate their decisions and plans for the business/club/team etc to those below them. They either communicate that themselves or have someone who they have in their leadership team that they trust to communicate it to those in the staff or team etc. In this case Sarina should have communicated in full with Steph herself as she had been the England captain up until Sarina took over and made sure Steph fully understood the situation and how Sarina viewed Steph's role in the future including if Steph would be a part of that future. In this case it appears this communication either did not happen in the correct way and lead to the perception of being misled or Steph failed to understand the situation or was in fact misled. In all scenarios the Manager should make sure that when the team member or player in this case is in that final communication meeting that the player does not leave feeling like they have misunderstood or felt disrespected. Good managers communicate clearly and to the point but also make sure that the message has been understood. Steph should have as the ex England captain been thinking of the team first and herself last as that is the role of a captain. What is best for the team. When Steph eventually came back and started playing for City before the world cup it was not in every game and Taylor/his coaching staff should have been communicating to her that her form was not good enough. Steph should also have been self aware enough to know that her form was not good and in fact did not improve when she made brief appearances last year. The game had moved on and her style of play was being exposed. As a captain you know how ( or should) know how to receive instructions and communicate with the management team and have clarity as to what they are. How this situation evolved and concluded seems like a failure on both sides but falls on the management to prevent and resolve this and how the recent event at Wembley occurred without the 2 of them having a clear the air meeting seems to me to confirm that both are to blame. The issue for me is that Sarina is still the Manager and her communication skills are being questioned in relation to Parris last season, Greenwood not being in the starting line up against Germany and the reason she gave for that in the press conference and her reason given for not putting ABJ on in the SA in yet another odd press conference. Neither of these press conference answers showed an ability to communicate or give reasons that seemed remotely plausible.

The beauty of football is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And whilst I massively respect Wright and Houghton, I have to disagree with them. Bronze is incapable of defending 1v1, gets caught too high and bad at defending large, wide areas. Throughout her career she relied too heavily on her pace to bail her out of poor defending but now she's not as quick, she's lost that. What do you think?

Great review. Arsenal shambolic defending of Williams for goal. 4 Arsenal players making a complete mess of it. Pause video highlights just before the corner when it shows who is marking who in the box. McCabe appears to be marking both Jansen and Le Tissier. Mead is looking at Williams who she is marking. Williamson is marking no one. Catley and Fox appear to be marking no one at the back. Mead loses the player she is marking (Williams) and then fails to get off the ground to even challenge for the ball. Fox again fails to get off the ground and is crouching behind Williams as Williams rises to win the header. Catley in front of Williams is totally distracted by the bizarre defending by Williamson who was marking no one when the corner was taken and then goes into a panic and starts blindly backpedalling and at no point realises she is never going to get in a position to jump or win the ball as she has failed ( yet again ) to judge the flight of the ball. At no point did Williamson look to see who was in a better position to defend the ball before she started back peddling! Amateur defending. By doing this back peddling it distracts Catley who is in front of Williams and should be able to judge the flight of the ball properly, but she has Williamson coming backwards at speed towards her and because of this she makes a complete mess of judging the flight ball as well. This is the England captain and first choice centre back. Sarina was there watching. Turner put in a near faultless performance yet she will not be in the next squad. Toone was yet again absent in the game and as always against the big teams was subbed due a complete lack of impact on the game. Yet Sarina will start her over Park every time!!! Russo was Arsenals best player by far yet they took her off and Hurtig!! came on before Kafaji?!!! I see nothing in these 2 teams that Brighton should be worried about at the moment.

Fascinating discussion and brilliant research done. Very exciting potential times for Brighton. 6 games in to his managership it is looking promising. If the officials had been awake against Utd they would have won that game too. If I could add to this the only team who Brighton has really struggled against was Palace. Could I also add that this squad is founded on the Mel Phillips era and many dismiss this yet it is a fact that in April 2023 Phillips took over a team in freefall. They had just lost to Man Utd 4-0 and sat at the bottom of the table. Within days Phillips transformed this lost team into a unit that went head to head with Utd ( who finished 3rd in the league that year) again in the FA Cup Semi Final. They pushed Utd to the limit and only lost to a 89th minute winner from Rachel Williams in a 3-2 result. Importantly she introduced Terland into the starting line up in that game and there she stayed. This team then went on to comfortably survive in the league. Over the summer Phillips brought in the bulk of what Brighton are today. Thorisdottir Baggaley Bergsvand losada Bremer Carabali Hayley Rule She turned Thorisdottir from an error prone defender into a vital part of the solid defence they have now. Overlooked by almost all including Sarina is the vital role Baggaley has played in Brightons rise to success. In nearly ever game she pulls off a match saving save. She just cannot be ignored as a huge part in what is happening at Brighton. At the start of the 2023-24 season Brighton pushed Utd again in a 2-2 draw in which yet again Williams scored a late goal to salvage a point ( 97th minute ) . Against Chelsea away they were within inches of going 2 nil up which would have been unheard of at what was Chelseas fortress! They went to Man City and did the unthinkable and beat them 1-0 which they have never done before or since. Go have a look at the highlights of those games on youtube and see how well they played. That season under Phillips up until she was sacked on 2 Feb 2024 Terland scored 9 league goals and after she was sacked Terland scored only 4 more. Coincidence? Under Phillips that season they had 11pts and were in no danger of going down. They replaced her ( I think they sacked her because they had agreed for Vidosic to come in the summer and did not want Phillips to have a successful second half of the season ) so they replaced her with a mens youth team coach and the confidence in the side fell away immediately. They only took 8 pts in the rest of the season. I also beleive it possible Vidosic was instructing this temporary coach as the started the playing out from the back under him and it was a disaster, but they kept on playing it....as though he was preparing them for when he took over! So I agree Brighton are an exciting side and they have a very nice run coming up, but IMO the foundation for this was laid by Phillips and the players she brought in. Phillips is dismissed but her record and influence on this current team is there if you look.
@TheWomensFootballChat11 күн бұрын

Didn't need to listen to all this. Bright has been a great player but too slow now , Williamson past her best , same goes for Bronze ( Constantly caught out of position ) . Main thing I cringe about is the constant sloppy passing through out this team let alone the slow play. I'm not a fan of Russo but she worked her socks off last game and I give her credit for that , Toone I think is terribly overrated and not worth her place , Mead seemed non existant. If Kirby is not fit then Park has to be in there , both game readers and playmakers beyond others. Hemp the strongest for threat and drive and invaluable , trouble is we lack an out and out killer goal scorer to operate in the middle. Ok we are missing James and Charles , no problem with keepers as Hampton and Earps are top class but that defence will always let them down. We need to update and sort out that shoddy defence , crap passing and speed our play up. This team is predicable , stale and will win nothing without a big overhaul , the game moves on and this team hasn't.
@rajeshkanungo662714 күн бұрын
Agreed. Spain, for example, has always lacked a killer goal scorer. The UK just have to do what the US had to do: a changing of the guards, basic ball trapping, basic passing, covering for the keeper, etc.. The US had a tough time dropping Alex Morgan who was just amazing during her peak but was a tad slower than required in the later years. But look at how fast the US trident is now.

Leah wasn't dropped for West Ham. She had fitness issues. Bright has never been good enough for the way Sarina wants to play. She can't pass, can't run, and can't read the game. The lineup should have been Williamson and Greenwood, even in the euros. Bright has cost us far too much. She is the biggest reason we lost the world cup.

I really like to listen to your analysis of the game. I’d like to throw in my two cents worth if you don’t mind. I’m really not impressed with the physical fitness of the English team. While it’s good enough to be competitive, it’s not good enough to be champions. I think that’s the number one concern I might have about England. Why it’s that way is a great wonder to me. I would love your feedback. I’m I seeing something that’s not there or have I hit a nail with a hammer.

Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video! I find your point interesting. I disagree that it's the whole squad and I don't think it's a fitness issue but more a sharpness issue. Players like Toone, Mead and Williamson just don't look 100% on it. I think the latter 2 you can put down to never fully recovering from injuries🤷♂️
@bobbrowne302713 күн бұрын
@@TheWomensFootballChat The 3 you mention are stand out , Mead maybe unfit, definitely ineffective so shouldn't be selected. Toone is vastly over rated and shouldn't be selected anyway , not for an England side. Bright and Bronze have been excellent servants but past it , Bright is too slow and Bronze keeps getting caught out of position. Fortunately the left side is reasonably OK , Carter , Charles and Greenwood. Middle and right is a shambles at present. Mid- field seems Stanway and Walsh don't seem as solid as we expect , Park and Clinton could recharge this providing the whole team vastly improve their terrible passing which is a major problem. No problem with Hemp , 100% every game and a driving force on the ball , missing James's magic and Kirby's defence splitting passes ( Park having similar qualities ). Naz is looking promising as is Clinton but this team needs a real shake up otherwise will get nowhere.

Everyone knows about this. We have been following it since Williamson got injured. The replacements are in place. We have 3 new defenders and 1 world beating defender chomping at the bit This was a warm up friendly. Personnel changes were mixed up. The same will be the case for South Africa. Unless you know what's going on you cannot judge the team. Williamson is a talisman, her problems are mental. The team needs her around. The WC showed that. And when she clicks back, her offensive passes are amongst the world's best. To say we could have been slaughtered against Germany is just idiotic. Sorry ignorant. Our forwards ran the second half and went hunting in packs. If it had clicked we would have humiliated Germany. Toone out of form? Oh you poor sad boy. Bring back Parris? Now you're talking. We were terrible against Germany, and that team was pathetic? O go crawl back in your hole. You talk like you're watching the men's team. These are the LIONESSES. They know what they are doing, and they don't mess around. They plan tournament trophies and don't care about friendlies. If you're judging football by the men's game, you are woefully out of your depth.
