Thank you so much for the defense. I think I heard on NPR that only like 20% of the adult population read. In my case, I'm the only reader I personally know. No one in my walking life reads...at all. Also I'm a farm laborer. So, I have met a metric ton of ppl and none of the read.

I've gotta be honest.... I'm not sure there's an audiobook narrator I hate more than Michael Kramer 😅there are actually a lot of online threads about how irritating people find his narration so I definitely wouldn't say he's the best in the business (his wife's fine imo. kinda mid but inoffensive. but I also listen to ~300 audiobooks per year, >400 this year, so I have a pretty wide pool to compare against) I actually realized while trying to read Yumi that it was specifically his narration (since my opinion of the text was jarringly different between chapters, immersion reading with the ebook) and now I can't tell if I dislike the recent Sandersons that I read, or if switching from physical only to almost entirely audio only was what made my experiences so much worse.

Actually all the Dwarven culture established in book 2 comes through in book 3 when eragon helped Orik become kingdom so the varden can count on the dwarfs to help fight the empire. Without that knowledge he most likely wouldn't have helped orik secure the throne and win the war.

Reading is becoming a super rare activity or even habit now as almost everyone who can access the internet may find it an archaic habit. I personally used to read few books a year, yet for a couple of years that number went up substantially. I no longer have a day without reading either fiction or non-fiction and besides all the encouraging benefits reading has an incredible therapeutic effect on me personally and makes me much more tolerant to other folks and cultures. By the way, I read books in three languages and English is my third language, yet I try to read in this language as well which also helps to boost my vocabulary. Thank you for propagating a healthy intellectual habit!

As an avid fantasy reader that has read almost every fantasy series out there that people know of and many that people probably have never heard of, I can say that Malazan is one of those series for me that I really want to start, have attempted to start at least 10 times, and can never get past the first 100 pages of book one. I'm not sure if it's my Autism or what, but I really struggle with names, like REALLY struggle. In real life, and for things that I read, it's legit as if my brain just skips over the name entirely for the first 100 time I read it, until it finally starts to recognize it. So starting Malazan's book 1, always just left me so unfocused, because I swear it felt like the first 80% of those 100 pages is just all the god damn different names for everything and everyone, that I could not focus on the plot, and would always lose interest. I had that same issue with Game of Thrones, but that wasn't anywhere near as bad and eventually I pushed through GoT and loved it. It's in my top 5 Fantasy of all time. Alongside The First Law(Including the new trilogy), The Witcher, Jade City, Gentleman Bastard and Kingkiller Chronicle, and of course The Wheel of Time.

If you haven't seen the series yet, you should give it a try. It's one of those rare cases where it does some things (obviously not all) better than the books. I personally think the Abaddon's Gate and Cibola Burn stories are much better in the show, and Avasarala and Amos are seriously enhanced by the performance of the actors

I'm in the minority that ranks RoW as one of my favorites. And it was the science and political intrigue between Navani and the Fused and internally with the Fused and Adolin and shallan's plotlines that made me love it so much. I think the only part that I really struggled with was the flashbacks never really hooked me. In Oathbringer, the flashbacks were almost the sole thing that kept me reading on...

I agree with you! I loved the science and all the shadesmar stuff, wasn't hugely hooked by the flashbacks, but I can appreciate how they fit into the narrative as a whole. I'd still probably rank Way of Kings and Words of Radiance higher, if forced to choose, but I think I'd put Rhythm of War ahead of Oathbringer (I don't know how or where I'd rank book 5, it's still too fresh.) Just goes to show that some things that really work for one person don't for others 🤷‍♀️, even within a fandom or amongst people who overall still love the book.

After getting back to the video now that christmas is over. I think a lot of the things people complain about happen to be things that I loved about this book. The weakest point is the flashbacks, but I liked getting some context for that background decisionmaking that Venli had, as well as some context for what lead to what we'd already seen. But that they weren't relevant to the next chapters, it is true that they felt more meaningless on the first read.

Way of Kings is better. There is nothing that can compare to first getting introduced to Roshar. Just the opening showing us all the cool stuff from Keleks perspective promising this epic scale in the future. Just that opening scene with Szeth. "Szeth wore white on the day he was to kill a king". Such an amazing line. Learning about the world and the spren. Kal meeting Syl. I don't care what you do with the story after that, it won't be better than Way of Kings.
@oswinhull4203

Yeah my main problems with my initial reading experience were the science, the flashbacks, and kaladin going from amazing hero to sad boy. Once I got to the end of the book I realized Kaladin's arc was actually even more amazing given where it was going. There was a point though where Kal was handing out blankets while the tower was getting invaded and I was at my limit. After WaT I'm starting to realize how important the sciency stuff actually was. I might even go back and read those chapters again. The flashbacks are objectively boring though. I could barely get through them on the first read along with everything else. I would probably rank it the lowest just because my first reading experience was tough but it is still a great book.

I get why a lot of people dislike Eldest, especially Eragons Arc in that book. To me it's the strongest part of the entire series. f.e. two things you pointed out are themes of his arc with the elves - his relationship towards Arya and him becoming vegetarian. There are also other elements, for example masculity in general, but i think you can group them under one big category. It's half a big lore dumb, but also deals a lot with the conflict between Eragons preexisting attitudes he learned growing up and them not being consistent with the stuff he learns and his inner conflict due to that. It makes you question your preexisting beliefs and i think it's done pretty well. However for it to hit, people have to be at a certain point in their life, where they are willing the question those beliefs in the first place, however not far enough in life that they already did. Or in other words - being part of the intended audience. Or having been a part of it when you read it first.

I definitely agree with you on all of what you said, especially the relationship between Eragon and Arya. As a teenager, even as a woman, I was frustrated when Arya kept rejecting Eragon, even though I liked her as a character. I wanted them to have the epic romance that I felt like Eragon deserved after all he'd done for her. But as an adult, I really appreciate the way their relationship was written, and it is *so* much more realistic than many fantasy romances when you think about it. Arya is a 100+ year old Elf... why would she be interested in a human who is little more than a child? She also completely recognises his childish crush on her and tries her best to squash it multiple times, because not only is she not interested, she also knows that Eragon really doesn't have the time to spend on romance. The "100+ year old immortal/semi-immortal being falls instantly in love with a teenage human" trope has become *way* too normalised IMO, we really need some more fantasy authors to follow in Paolini's footsteps and show that it's *not* normal for someone much, *much* older than the main teenage character to suddenly be in love and obsessed with them. There's a real creepy element to it, but we don't acknowledge it much because it's just so common, especially in YA romance...

Frankly listening to an audio book of the books surpasses the movies. The bits of lore cut from the movie and the alterations take away from the story. Such as Faramir and his strong role in becoming steward.
