Thanks so much for these videos. This playlist is legit the best introduction to the full sound editing process (and protools) that I've been able to find. In some of the earlier videos, you teased that you might in the future make a tutorial about recording ADR and foley into protools as well. Might that still be in the cards? Would love to see your take on the subject. Thanks again!

They say for theatre master, we should do -27 LUFS.. Is it -27 or -24 LUFS? Can someone confirm?
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 ай бұрын
It depends on where you're delivering the film. But generally -24 LUFS is a good target. -27 LUFS is very low volume and only sounds good in a movie theater with a good speaker system. You need a higher LUFS number if the film is going to be shown on TV or on a mobile phone. That's why if you show a film on KZbin, they recommend -14 LUFS. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the information! I’m a film student myself, and most of the people around me are very interested in camera work. It’s kinda feel alone sometimes to like Sound~. I’m in a middle of a phase where I need to make decisions for my path, to go for Location sound mixer/boom op ( Because it’s easier to find jobs as I’m based in Thailand ) or put up with it a little bit so I can get a full time job in sound post studio ( Which is more fitting to my lifestyle, being on set 14-16 hrs a day is like hell for me ). Again, Thanks for the video. Your advice really helped me to understand more about this process of researching and focusing on the right thing.

Because that's the standard in the USA. In the UK, they start at the 10 Hour timecode mark instead. The reason you do that is so the video editor can add additional information to the video clip before the film begins. Hope that helps!

Another excellent and helpful video! @10:34 Do you find different, additional room tone fx to pan to the back speakers, or offset the front speakers' room tone and pan that to the back? Also, upmix plugins may have improved since you made this video. Would you consider using those for room tone instead of discrete front and back room tone files? Thx!
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 4 ай бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response! I would generally find different room tone FX for the back speakers. You could have phasing issues if you re-used the same clips in the back, and then mixed down to stereo later. For up-mixing, again I prefer to use more audio clips than rely on plugins. It might take a little longer to find and edit the additional clips, but I think having additional unique sounds are worth it. Good questions!

These tutorials are still great after so many years! Thank you.… What is the/is there a significance of having this number of BG tracks plus mono track at every location? Also is cutting perspective within a scene into BG tracks a thing? Thx again!
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the compliment! So the amount of background tracks you need depends on how many speakers your final mix is going to be. If it's surround sound or Dolby Atmos, you need more background tracks. Generally you try to use background tracks in sets of 4 or 8, since a mixing fader is normally grouped by even numbers. Generally you won't cut different BGs for different perspectives if all of the shots are in the same location, but you definitely will do that for SFX. I could see changing BGs perspectives in the same scene if the shots are changing between the inside and outside of a car though. Hope that helps!

And then the other 2 channels that have both dialog and music. What is what in pro tools? Sorry for my bad inglish 😀.
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 8 ай бұрын
In a 7.1 speaker setup, the channels are: Left, Right, Center, LFE, Left Side Surround, Right Side Surround, Left Rear Surround, Right Rear Surround. So the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 is that you have an extra speaker on the side walls. Now generally for panning, you only pan the dialogue to the center speaker. For music, you pan it mostly in the L and R speakers, but also to the surround speakers, maybe with some extra reverb, a little delay, and a EQ removing some of high frequencies. This makes the music fill the whole space, but feel like it is mostly coming from the front of the theater. Hope that helps!

Hi. I hope you're well. I just wanted to ask a question with regards to translation on cellphone. The director I'm currently working with only checks the mix of each episode on his iphone and if it passes the iphone test then he is happy. The one thing i find challenging is getting my ambiences and environmental information to really translate well on a cellphone. Everything thing else translates quite well on phones. Im hoping I can get some enlightenment on this from yourself and the community.
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 8 ай бұрын
I am well, thanks! Are the episodes you're mixing going to be primarily watched on a phone? If yes, then it makes sense for the director to check the mix on phone speakers. Otherwise, I think it's kind of silly he's not listening to the mix on good speakers or headphones. The speakers on an iPhone physically can't reproduce all frequencies, they're too small, so they aren't good speakers to check a mix. I don't think it will be possible for your BGs to "stand out" on a phone, unless you heavily compress and raise the volume of the entire mix, which also won't sound great. When I had this problem with a Director, I ended up buying him headphones to listen to the mix. And that fixed the problem, I started to get much fewer mix notes than before. Hope that helps!

Hi Michael and community. I love your videos and I've watched a lot of them. They got me a promotion at work, so thanks for all you do. I have a question for you and the community. I'm still very new to 5.1 and am still very annoying to those I'm learning from because I cannot just take things as said or at face value. I HAVE TO UNDERSTAND. Which often means you have to be good at explaining. My current disagreement with my seniors is what goes to the centre speaker. The way I'm being taught is that nothing and I mean NOTHING goes to the centre speaker except for dialogue. No music, no sfx including production sfx and Foley. They all have to be removed from the centre by means of centre divergence. So much so that any action that happens ie footsteps at the same time as dialogue must be recreated using Foley and adr because you cannot have footsteps in the centre speaker. Everything that is not dialogue both Mono and stereo has to be centre diverged to come out of the phantom centre and not the centre speaker. This feels like it ads unnecessary time and work. Like I said, I am still new and just wish to understand and not just blindly follow.
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
Thanks! And congrats on the promotion! No, I've never heard of a rule like that before. It's true that most dialogue should only be panned to the center channel, but most Hollywood films also have PFX audio (such as footsteps) playing from the center as well. I agree, having that rule would cause additional unnecessary work. You can prove this to your seniors by buying some 5.1 movies on Blu-ray and then just soloing the center channel. This was a trick I did while studying where to pan different audio families. Also try soloing the rest of the channels for fun and listen for what audio is playing where. Hope that helps!

Hi Michael I saw in the session you routed your ptx track to DX sub, shouldn't that be routed to SFX and Foley submixes? And if so, should we add the ptx track into their separate VCA GROUPS?
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
Generally routing your PFX track to the DX Sub what I've most commonly seen. Then if the film is going to be dubbed in a foreign language for an M+E (music and effects mix), that's when the PFX is separated from the DX. But I agree with you that it is kind of odd to keep "SFX" clips with the DX. I think the difference is that these SFX were originally recorded with the DX, and so removing them would cause holes in the DX mix if the DX mix was played in solo. And no, I've never seen a separate VCA group only for PFX. They're just either mixed with the DX, or in a Foley or SFX stem if they are split out for an M+E. Hope that helps!

@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
In that case you would probably want to use Pro Tool playlists or have extra blank tracks to put the first take on. Although, many professional foley artists get the timing right on the first take, so that isn't necessary. Some shows will also give extra time to the SFX editor later on in the process to fix the foley timing if it is slightly off. Anyways, this is just an example of one way to record foley. Hope that helps!

Can I make a tutorial on how to upmix from stereo to 5.1? Thank you!
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
It's a good idea, but I don't really recommend up-mixing in general, unless you're just doing it for fun. Normally it's much easier to start with the "largest" mix you need to deliver, and then work down from there - Atmos to 9.1 to 7.1 to 5.1 to stereo to mono. This is because not only do you need to re-pan all of the sounds, but you also need to add more audio to fill the extra speakers. You'll need to add extra ambiences, additional music stems, and probably more SFX as well. So hopefully that gives you a sense of what's needed to do so. Feel free to send over any more video ideas though!

Yeah mostly EQ and Reverb. It doesn't have to be perfect since the audience understands that the camera has also moved. Sometimes you can tweak the better sounding dialogue clip (normally the close-up) to sound more like the master shot, and then slowly remove the EQ and reverb halfway through the sentence. That way the cut between the two shots are a little smoother. But again, it also depends on how much time you have to mix the project as well. Hope that helps!

If I understand correctly, you put each character on its own dialog track. What do you do with minor characters or a movie with a lot of characters? Do you then create 8 additional dialog tracks or do you assign the existing tracks multiple times?
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
There's a couple different ways to dialogue edit. Some people only put all of the dialogue on a few tracks (let's say 8 max). But then when a new character's dialogue comes up on that track, you have to use track automation to add the correct plugin settings (EQ, compression, de-esser, etc) to that specific audio file. On the other hand, if each character has their own track, then you don't have to use as much automation, and can set the plugin settings for the entire track. But then you have the problem of having many dialogue tracks, which can be a hassle to mix on a mixing console. So the organization is up to whoever will be the mixing of the film. When I'm working alone, I like to use as many tracks, but using less tracks is the more "professional" workflow. Hope that helps!

I don't realy get it: There are FX, PFX and Foleys. And in some cases these are the same. For example, why do you need to record an foley of the door that opens, when you added various sound effects in the previous video for that?
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
You need to layer different sounds on top of each other to make them fuller and more impactful. Another reason to layer SFX is for the M+E track when the film is being dubbed in a foreign language. Then you have SFX that can replace the PFX recorded in the original dialogue track (which was removed during the dubbing process). Thanks for watching!
