iZotope voice denoise is based on spectral subtraction (like many are) not machine learning/neural network that this Waves plugin seems to use. As mentioned, a better comparison is with iZotope Dialogue isolate which yields seemingly comparable results using similar NR techniques.
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Yep agreed. I was looking into Dialogue Isolate though, and it's only available in the Advanced RX9 bundle, which is currently available at $1,200 USD. So just based on price alone, I'm not sure if it does makes sense to compare the two since the price points are so different. But yes, if we wanted to compare the two AI algorithms regardless of price, then you're right. Anyways, just wanted to bring that up since I've seen that in the comments a couple times now. Thanks for watching!

I bought Clarity Vx basic and ran my own quick tests. RX Dialogue isolate would be my first choice, but for $29 this is a good additional tool to use.

I was using Clarity Vx in 20 projects and had to remove it from all of them because it was destroying the ends of some words. I ended up using RX 10 Voice Denoise as my primary denoiser because it does not do nasty things and sounds great. Days of re-rendering.

Yeah that generally helps when de-noising dialogue recorded on-set. Hopefully you don't have too much low end rumble in your voiceover booth, otherwise you might want to get some bass trap acoustic panels instead? Hope that helps!

Thanks for this! Using your tips (I do VO work) I find Clarity VX to be great to lower the noise floor as long as you don't overdo it. I had a bad hum in one of my recordings and Clarity didn't do very well with it at first, but a notch EQ setting at the offending frequency before Clarity made the plugin less confused and work much better.

Agree with Ross Williams below but even better than both RX's Voice De-noise and Dialogue Isolate is RX's Spectral De-noise... more NR algorithms, better control over (a) signal harmonics, (b) artifacts, (c) high frequency synthesis (lost with most NRs out there). In fact, I rarely use any of RX 'Voice' NR features.

Except Waves Clarity Vx doesn't actually work on Mac (!) They sell it, but it doesn't work on M1 - so not on MacBook Pro, not Mac Studio, not MacBook Air, only on old Intel macs. I bought it, then realized it doesn't work. I wrote to their support and they confirmed it. Only way to make the plugin work is to run the entire software (Premiere, Davinci Resolve etc) emulated in Rosetta which obviously is a no-go. So that's that unfortunately. If you have any feedback channel to Waves, suggest give them some... feedback.

@@FilmSoundTutorials I wanted to come back here and apologize for the sour tone in my comment. Sorry. I wasn't annoyed at you. I was annoyed because I had just spent hours trying to figure out why it wouldn't work, only to discover that there was a tiny * saying that only old macs are supported, not the new ones, while they still happily sell it. I wrote some healthy feedback to them haha. Thank you for posting great content. Your videos are great!

Thanks for sharing the link where to get the software, I just got the pro version. Also, thanks for your tutorial. with them I was able to do post production sound for a small project. I have a question. I used Isotope to clean my dialogue using their dialogue isolate. My question is, when should I choose adding a plugin (Wave) into my BUS to clean dialogue VS sending file to izotope and render a clean version. I am puzzled.
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Nice! I'm glad the tutorial was helpful. So generally when I'm cleaning up my dialogue in Pro Tools, I'll use the AudioSuite version of the plugins since those seems to have better quality than the real-time versions that you put on a track. So if you want to clean a dialogue clip with Clarity VX Pro, you would open the plugin from the AudioSuite menu, then select the clip, preview the settings and change the settings if needed, and then render the settings onto the clip. Also, you probably don't need to use both of the de-noising plugins on a clip, just choose one or the other. Hope that helps!

@@FilmSoundTutorials Yes, I watched the entire video. It's wonderful. Like you I've been using the Izotope as well as Waves NS1, the Audionamix IDC, and the Accusonus ERA NR, but Clarity Vx is much better than any of these with far fewer artifacts and noise modulation. I looked at the Clarity Pro Version but the cost is an order of magnitude more.
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah true, the Pro version is much more expensive. I guess it just depends how much you think you're going to use the plugin. I generally only buy new plugins when the film I'm working on needs a specific effect that I can't get with the tools I already have. Thanks for watching!

Are you utilizing the Advanced version of Izotope RX Post Production Suite? If so, what version number (meaning, Suite 5, Suite 6, and so on)? The reason why I asked those particular questions is because each different version of Izotope RX Post Production Suite comes with updates and improvements.

Does it remove noise within the vocals? Such as nose noises etc. I find rx can't get some of that stuff out.
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
No, and that was one of my complaints. It does a great job removing the noise, but it doesn't de-click or de-ess the voice itself. So I think the RX9 modules do a better job cleaning up the dialogue itself. Hope that helps!
@VendettaProduction01
@VendettaProduction01 2 жыл бұрын
Dude I have almost never used the Izotope plugins unless it’s like cleaning something from a treated room environment. A normal dialogue cleaning I always use the connect link to use the full version. And waves cleaner doesn’t hold a candle to the entire Rx system. Not to mention the time save when you do the same scene with the same noises and problems. Then you just make your settings and hit the button. Double check of course
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Yep agreed, like I said in the video, denoising is just one part of cleaning up dialogue. I also generally use the denoising plugins as Audiosuite plugins instead of using them like this in real-time. But showing them working in real-time was easier to show the difference on KZbin. Thanks for watching!
@Drfresh1402

But now you can use a plugin for Denoise and get pristine quality. You simply can’t get this sound in complex denoise situations in isotope.

Hi,I want to ask that when we get any foreign content for dubbing..Will that includes the original voices of actors(Dialogues, original language) OR only Music and Background effects track?? Plz..
@jaimesmix
@jaimesmix 2 жыл бұрын
It depends… the usual m&e delivery should include a guide track with just the original dialog, or an offline mix
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Yep agreed. It depends on the film, what specs the original mix was in, how much budget they had for post sound. It would be pretty hard to dub a film into a different language though if you weren't given the original language dialogue as a guide track. Hope that helps!

I just did a test of my own comparing Clarity Vx (purchased after viewing your video!) with Waves' other denoiser, NS1, to clean up dialogue. Is there any circumstance where NS 1 might be the better choice between the two? Or does Clarity Vx represent a more evolved version of NS1?
@FilmSoundTutorials
@FilmSoundTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, I haven't used the Waves NS1 in a long time, so I don't remember what noises its good at removing. It probably depends on the clip and what noise you're trying to remove. Thanks for watching!

Both Final Cut Pro and Davinci Resolve - editing programs for film - now have a built in dialogue isolator based on machine learning, that is remarkably capable. It seems about 18 months ago somebody just cracked how to do this, and now it's everywhere.

@@FilmSoundTutorials I agree. It seems like Clarity isn't de noising but separating dialogue from ambiance (like Dialogue Isolate) but with a balance knob. so in turning down the ambiance you get perceived noise reduction but at 100% voice it's more of a comparison to Izotope's Dialogue Isolate than their denoiser.
