I am a physician who sees patients generally 65 years-old and up. I have seen patients that have had amazing results from spacers placed by Dr. McCarthy. The first patient that I saw who had the procedure was 73 years-old. He told me he had back surgery 3 weeks earlier and was moving like he was 25 years-old. I thought he was joking until he showed me the scar. One year later he was still doing very well. This is incredible compared to the traditional back surgeries available over the past 30 years.

I was referred to an orthopedic doctor, being that Katie had much success, I chose to use Dr. Michael A. Frierson at Our Lady of the Lake. Well, that ended up being a complete bust! He reviewed everything and told me " I was depressed" I told him all the symptoms ( hypermobility, gi problems, easy bruising, low muscle tone, very elastic skin..),... he said "it's depression" I busted into tears .... He said" "see your crying, another sign of depression." I walked out. I immediately left and went to Ochsner and told my mom. She took me to see Dr. Ishler to tell him what happened. He said no, you have it. He gave me a referral to a Rheumatologist at Ochsner, New Orleans. I ended up with EVERY Rheumatologist in my room watching me as I did the Beighton Scale test and showing them my "tricks." They all agreed that they thought I had it but didn't feel qualified to give the diagnosis. I was then referred to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where I finally received a diagnosis of EDS 3/an answer to all my pain and symptoms.

My son did this procedure and I can't tell you how happy we are with the results. He's essentially 100% better... no kidding! He had a very large stage 4 OCD lesion and it's completely filled in the hole in just over 1 year from surgery/procedure. Wish we didn't have to travel so far to do this but it was definitely worth it! FYI, he just turned 19 so now he can enjoy a pain free lifestyle :)

it really worked? where did he get this done :)

Hi Christoffer, he did the procedure/surgery with Dr. Broyles in Baton Rouge, LA. My son is now 21 and is doing great. They are still following him through 5 years of the study - I believe he has to go back in for final MRI's in 2018. He now does all the sports he wants to without limitation, which is huge for an athletic kid. His only other option for fixing his stage 4 OCD was to basically replace the bottom part of his femur with a cadaver. If he had chosen to go that route (standard in the U.S. since the route we went was considered experimental) then I'm sure the success of the surgery would have been fine but he would never be able to put any impact on the leg/knee and would probably need another replacement down the road too since he's so young. We were told that football, basketball, running etc were out of the question. At most he could ride a bike easily but no hard core riding. Hearing this was devastating to him and us as parents that's why we did the stem cell study. My son does have a little soreness sometimes on his knee but absolutely nothing that stops him from doing whatever he wants to do athletically. He's just rub it out when needed. With this being the worst of the surgery, we'll take it! I consider this a huge success. I guess the worse case would be that this only "lasts" x-number of years. But, we're thinking by the time the stem cells wear out (which we're truly not thinking they will) then he'll just need to get some booster stem cells or the medical options with be more advanced by the time he needs something else done. Let me know if you want any more info. I am totally okay to share what we went through because I am pleased with this process.

What did the procedure cost? If you were covered with insurance, do you have a rough estimate?
