Dr, i would make a bit more research. I was diagnosed with arthritis in the hips 2 years ago. I started stretching daily and taking supplements and my cartilage has regenerated. I can now do exercise daily with absolutely no pain. Supplements helps wonders combined with proper nutrition and exercise.

Superb video thank you Matthew…I had a hip replacement 8 days ago….pain is very manageable and I’m just struggling with tightness in the upper leg and bum. Mobility in and out of sofas, beds, chairs, toilets etc requires crutches (my furniture all temporarily raised with multiple cushions!). My biggest fear is the disclocation but you’ve given me some good reassurance this is rare. Thank you 👏👏

Wonderful video about knee replacement surgery. I Wii watch it several times, prior to my visit with my surgeon, so I will be more informed before my upcoming surgery. I am a bit worried about my allergy to nickel, therefore the Maco will not be used during surgery. Any suggestions please? Thank you.

An excellent explanation and justification of the anterior surgicl method, after all the less muscle and tendon damage during surgery the more rapid and satisfactory the recovery will be. I had a full knee replacement surgery done last September by UK NHS. Post surgical pain was immense, first 5 days morphine, oxycontin, nafopam, Etoricoxhib, Aspirin, Paracetamol.... So I am greatly relieved to learn that hip replacement is less painful and recovers in a shorter time. I'm no wimp. Nevertheless I was up and about after knee replacement after 10 days, and on painkillers galore. On the whole I believe anterior method hip replacement is going to be a errr, snip😅

I like the calm, straightforward way that all questions for this type of surgery were addressed. No scare tactics to push for the surgery and no minimizing risks of taking it. This gave a clear picture making it very helpful to anyone considering this surgery.

Really well done and comprehensive. I am 2 weeks post surgery and walking and doing all the PT everyday. This is my 2nd hip replacement which was initially 5 months prior and can say that the arthritic pain on both sides is gone. I am a tennis player and dancer and I will be returning to both in about 3 months. I am 69 and very active and want to give my body the maximum oppty to heal and be ready for more dynamic activity. Thank you for this great video!

A knee replacement is, in American terms, a retread (a term which indicates that the casing of the original tyre (tire, in Americanese 😁) is re-used, but the old tread (where the "rubber meets the road," quite literally) is shaved off and replaced with new rubber (in quality, if not in age). I had my knee done yesterday, and my pain level, with prescription medication, is between a four and a five. I am quite athletic for a 70 year old man, a long distance hiker, recreationally, and had hiked 1,040 miles before a slip in the mud sent me home with an unstable knee, which I could not trust my life to. Extremely advanced arthritis and a double meniscus tear showed up on an X- ray and MRI, ending my quest to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. After a few weeks of rest and relaxation, I returned to the Trail to make it to the halfway point, mileage-wise. I weigh 212 pounds. I reached a weight of 180 pounds while hiking, and returned for three weeks and rested and ate until I gained 10 pounds. I intend to complete the Trail in a year or so. "Tinker" on the AT.

My surgeon refuses to do surgery with a BMI over 40 here in Washington State. My BMI is at 50. What I see in my future is a fall and an emergency room visit. The surgeon I talked with said that the hip replacement would be done in the emergency room. Does this sound like a reasonable expectation? Too much of this process has nothing to do with my free choice. Thanks for the interesting video.

Question is how much money do they make per person on a hip replacment vs treating someone through natural methods and actuly addressing the cause of the problem. I bet they make way more money operating on the person

I am scared. I need right total hip replacement. My left knee needs to be replaced. I don't know what to do I am bone on bone on both. The grinding and popping just don't stop. How do you pick which one to do first and the recovery. Makes me cry everyday. I have to lose weight before getting the surgeries done. It is getting worse day by day. I am emotionally drained. I will be turning 54 in 5 days.

Hello , I just wanted to reach out . I totally understand what you may be going through I needed a total hip replacement and was in severe pain for two years . I tried every conventional and unconventional therapy both Eastern and Western . I was so depressed, there was no Joy in my life , because everything revolved around pain . I didn’t want to travel , go out to dinner , hanging out with my family and friends . I was so scared . I really don’t quite understand what my fear was , but when nothing brought me joy and I was always in a bad mood . I knew I had to take control of my life and have this surgery , because I was no longer living my best life. I am now 3 month post op a total hip replacement. I am so happy . I am not going to lie ,the first 6 weeks for me were hard . But I am so happy. I have no regrets! I went boogie boarding last weekend with my kids. something I had not done in while. I hope this helps

Thank you Carmen. I appreciate what you said, only bad thing about this my left knee needs to be replaced. My right hip. Both legs need work. I am scared that I will mess up my hip replacement when I get my knee done. I am trying to lose some weight and trying to decide which one to get done first. Hip or knee. To bad it is not on the same leg. I been on crutches for 7 months. When I am not working. I stay in my room and my bed. It hurts to go anywhere. I can't wait to get them both done. I am happy that you get to enjoy things with your kids. I can't wait to do things with my 8 grandkids. Thank you for the encouragement. Have an Awesome Day! 😊

Sending patient home same day or next day is a crime. My mother had both knees replaced at same time at age 82 and made a full recovery for one reason….she spent a week in hospital receiving daily intensive PT and pain control, then 3 weeks of in-patient rehab with more intensive PT and continuing pain management. All of her equipment, such as walker, cane, bedside commode, passive exercise machine, ice machine, was delivered and paid for by insurance. Today hospitals in US discharge you as soon as you wake from anesthesia and doc allows you about 10 days of strong pain meds. Ridiculous. Patient is pretty much on own to do exercises and fight through pain. The focus is not on patient recovery but on increasing profit for insurance providers. American health care has been broken for a very long time. I am not afraid of the TKR surgery….I am worried about the limited support resources available to me post surgery. Very informative video doctor. Thank you.

I need a total hip replacement. Active 69-yr old cyclist, skier and swimmer. Just viewed Dr. Hutchinson's video - extremely valuable information explained by an amazing person...would get on his schedule for surgery today if he practiced in NYC! Interested in feedback from former patients who have had this procedure, re: given Dr. H's explanations, given the option, why would anyone, let alone any surgeon, choose either the posterior or the lateral approach?? No one wants muscle & tendons cut if it's not necessary; It seems clear from Dr. Hutchinson's explanation that anterior is the way to go.

A very informative video on hip replacement. I have just had a right hip replacement under general. In one day and out the next walking with crutches for a little while. It’s now been 20 days since surgery and I have slight pain like a bruise. I used to get constant headache plus shooting pains in the groin like electric shock which was painful and embarrassing. Now I’m pain free except the operation pain which feels different to the horrible shooting pains. Now I can’t wait to get the left hip done. Thanks for this video it’s very informative.

I don't know how I found you, but I wish I lived in AUS so you could be my surgeon! You are marvelous and thorough as you approached this presentation and I learned so much. I was just told that even though I am fit as a fiddle, the pain and my x-rays do indicate this is in my future. I am 72. I meet with my expert surgeon referral soon and your video has helped prepare me with questions and enough acumen that I feel well prepared for a lively conversation! I cannot thank you enough. You entire demeanor and caring approach to managing patient education is really terrific.
