My advice to anyone thinking about doing a PhD is that the main motivation must be to perform an original piece of research making you an accomplished scientist. If that is not your number 1 motivation, do not do it.

To solve the tube problem, first I would buy the longest tape measure I could find. Then I would fly to London and walk along each tube measuring as much as I could and marking it down. After that I would add up all the measurements and then use my phone to look up the correct answer because I would definitely be wrong.

The big problem at Harvard is not that people are not resilient. As a Harvard College student myself, I noticed that the bigger problem is that they focus too much on competition instead of genuine passion. Many people (not all) end up going in a direction that doesn‘t serve them but makes them stand out from the crowd of sheep when they are better in that than their peers. Only later do they notice their lack of passion, and to succeed in professional life, you really have to be passionate about that damn thing or you will fucking suck.

There are additional concerns with top students from these schools. In my experience, while many of these individuals are academically outstanding and adept at presenting an image of excellence, they often focus considerable energy on appearance rather than substance. They may lack real-world experience in producing work that has been thoroughly vetted and stress-tested. In professional settings, I've frequently observed that they vehemently defend erroneous positions instead of admitting mistakes in their work. This mindset makes it difficult for them to learn from unfamiliar experiences. In college, they learned to mimic and recite what they assumed professors wanted to hear, but in the real world, they often resort to quoting lectures without truly understanding the nuances of the new problems they're trying to solve.

It is my view that math is taught much differently in the USA than places like Asia and other advanced nations. Like a lot of things, there are no standards and no prpgression, no continuity, and the results in the standard test given to 30 industrial nations. We finish in the bottom 5 every time! This test has been going on for years.

I used my PhD time to build a deep learning architecture which I hold an international patent and that, after its implementation, paid me a nice flat and a nice car. Meanwhile, I published my thesis. So, bottom line, PhD gave me the time to create wealth in my private life. The most comic part is that, 10 years after completing it, I am AP and do it for fun.

I'm from South Africa, I have no degree and just self taught in Investments, banking, economics and IT. I did enroll and go through 4 years of studying Accounting, but life hit hard, combined with hating the course not leading me where I want to go, and then mom getting sick and having to go home to take care of things in 2018, with 2 subjects left to complete the degree.... I didn't finish, yes I did give up. School and university was just easy, I didnt study, cause I just see patterns and principles very easy and just need a quick refresher, so no room for passion was just a guaranteed result and also a reality of hitting a wall will come eventually where you have to study and use passion to drive you through. Now I'm repenting by learning Coding and AI, all by teaching myself and I'm so happy. Its been a year already, and without a degree I aim to have a phd level understanding and skillset within the field. My learning appetite lead me here to your video! So definitely youre helping real people.

PhD should be pursued if it is a prerequisite for a job that you want. Otherwise, I would pursue a PhD where there is a real market demand for it. I would spend a few years in relevant work experience and see what niche in that field am I interested in AND what hard questions need to be answered in that niche. Then pursue a PhD. The market will pay top dollar for that.

Well said, I have the same experience with top universities graduates. Especially, the most are undergraduates and master students - they are victims of the flaw in system of ivey leagues in our eductional system. The seperation between academic education, resp. academic degrees are the preparation for scientific research tasks to employ those guys are for daily tasks are overkill - it wast of brain power and intellectial talents, which can be used for scientific progress and improve the society as wohl, instead to help hedgefund and banks make more monetary resouces that they will not spend or invest wisely to improve the society, reduce the inequity and promote democratic principles - the money and wealth earned by uni graduates will be weaponized to keep their power and control - the question is, are we living in 21st century or still in 16 century with modern look, but the core is the same? Think about what happened in last 25 yrs, we do not live in a system with democratic principles in the core, only on the surface for marketing purpose. The scientific knowledge are common goods, it belongs to the mankind - no-one should have monopole and it can not be weaponized by anyone.

@christiangreisinger2339
@christiangreisinger2339 8 күн бұрын
Absolutely. I think the fact that there is so much hype from parents/teachers around these elite universities which ultimately leads to the kids setting themselves so high expectations about their career will most likely lead to disappointment later in life. Especially nowadays where its 10-1000 times more likely to be accepted for an elite college compared to big tech like Google or some promising AI startups. If you also consider the rather poor job market for juniors and the fact that high paying jobs are more about past relevant working experiences from well known companies or how many papers you puplished in top conferences/how many citations thry have, young graduates might really question their life decisions.
